The Canon Eg-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen is an interchangeable focusing screen compatible with the Canon EOS 5D-Mark II camera. The Super Precision Matte screen improves the ease of focusing when doing manual focus, but is not recommended for use with lenses slower than f/2.8. With these slower lenses, the viewfinder will actually look darker than with the standard Eg-A screen.

Fast lenses, bad light, off center composition, shallow depth of field all require something more than AF, and this is your solution. Yes the 5D MkII has improved AF over the Mk1, but sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands. For this the Eg-S screen is essential, the image just snaps in and out of focus, just like in the old days, when AF was a fantasy. Get one, use it, your photos will be better.

The jury is still out on this Focusing Screen. I have not taken enough pictures to give any kind of review yet. The service that B&H provided was excellent.

Comments about Canon Eg-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen:
When you really get into photography, it's the little things that really count. This is one of those little things. When you upgrade to a faster lens, and especially a manual focus (MF) lens, you will need this focusing screen to take advantage of the faster lenses' increased precision and focusing peculiarites.
Some background: the stock screen is meant to provide an image which is more or less in focus, which aids composition when using autofocus (AF). In contrast, the Eg-S does not refine the focus, therefore allowing the viewer to determine where the focal point is sans AF. Also this screen eliminates the sparkle/dazzle I've seen using the stock focusing screen in the 5dmkii when trying to focus manually. The Eg-S lets in slightly more light, which enables MF in challenging conditions, but if you don't use MF, you won't see much difference with this screen.
It does darken the viewfinder (quite a bit in some situations) for lenses slower than f4, so if you MF with those lenses you're better off getting to know the stock focusing screen.
It's not a split-screen or mesh focus system like on older SLR cameras. There are no focusing aids other than the improved viewfinder image, so if your eyes aren't focusing the shot will still be off. That said, if you really look through the viewfinder when taking a photo and take a second or two to compose, this focusing screen will help a lot.
Nobody gave me any money to write this rave review. Some things are what they are, and this is one of them. No kidding.

I purchased Zeiss distagon 35mm f/2 recently for my canon 5d mk2. I got this focusing screen to assist me with the manual focusing. Its truly amazing. Helps me focus and my shots are so much better. Get it!
The only thing is, this is not for the faint of heart. You have to do a small 'operation' on your dslr, but if u follow the instructions you have nothing to be afraid of.

Comments about Canon Eg-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen:
I'm a portrait photographer and when shooting wide open it's critical that you have the subject in focus but at very least, the eyes. That's when manual focus comes in. With my factory 5D MarkII focus screen it was easy to miss because I just couldn't tell exactly what was in focus. The Eg-S was such an easy install and the results are like night and day. Everything in focus just pops out at me. I've been told that it's not to be used with lenses that are slower than f/2.8 because it makes the viewfinder darker but all of mine are f/2 or faster so I couldn't verify it.

I have been using this focusing screen for some time now, and recommend it for anyone doing macro photography or focus-stacking. I find it works particularly well in Live View, as I can focus very precisely with it.

I bought this for my 5dII to make small adjustments to focusing. It is especially helpful when manual focusing and at shooting large apertures like 1.4. It was surprisingly easy to replace.

Comments about Canon Eg-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen:
I got this largely for increasing focus accuracy for portrait and wedding work with the 50L+5D II and I have to say it's stellar - the difference is immediately noticeable and quite dramatic. Installation is straight-forward and requires no special knowledge.
The darkening with lenses whose maximum aperture is darker than f/2.8 is noticeable and can be slightly problematic with f/5.6 lenses at dusk, where the viewfinder becomes quite dark. Nothing Live View doesn't fix, though, and using Live View isn't a huge drama for the landscape work I do. It's not hard to change screens back if you wanted to swap them in and out at will.
Would buy again.

I got this screen to help improve my focusing accuracy, especially when using lenses wide-open, and for macro shots. It was easy to install using the supplied tools, and there is a noticeable difference in how an in-focus vs. out-of-focus images looks in the viewfinder. I highly recommend it!

...into focus. This focusing screen just makes subjects pop. I bought this along with the Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 manual focus lens....great combo. I have used it with my 24-105 f/4 and haven't had trouble seeing through the viewfinder. I say this because that was my concern when I bought it...but not a problem.

Comments about Canon Eg-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen:
There is a slightly noticeable improvement compared to the standard screen of a 5dII when using 2.8 or faster lens but it's not THAT big of a difference. I wouldn't buy this again if this one was destroyed or damaged. I would have rather just worked with the standard screen and purchased a grid screen for the same price.
Most of my photography is done in good light anyway, so the results may be more of an improvement in darker setting. I had the idea of this being a somewhat brighter screen compared to the old school Beattie screens of the film days.

I was having a conversation with a video guy the other day and he was surprised when I told him I shoot AF most of the time. I told him it was way better than I am. And since my camera is never on a tripod, live view isn't a solution. Now that I have this screen that is going to change. I shoot mostly L primes and the lack of AF points in the 5dII usually lave me hanging and with the stock screen I couldn't focus that well manually but this Eg-s I have a new love for my 5DII. Even when using AF I feel more confident that it has hit the spot. I think I held off for so long because I was afraid of the process of changing it but it is really easy.

Super easy to install. I was a bit worried it would be hard to do it, but it took me maybe five minutes.
It makes focusing so much easier and I'm surprised to find that I manually focus almost all the time now, whereas I never did it at all before.
Put your camera on back focusing and you will be your own best Auto-focus ever!

I shoot 90% manual, so this was a must buy. The subjects pops greatly when in focus through the viewfinder and on the LCD. I noticed a huge difference the first time I used it.

Of all the money I've spent in photography, this is the one product that most exceed my expectation. I have purchased a Zeiss 2/50 MP for my 5D2, and learning to manual focus. Since I installed this device, the focus becomes so much more easier. There's not too much to say about this, then just don't think, and buy this if you're using manual focus.
Take time to read the instruction or watch video online BEFORE installing it into your camera.

Comments about Canon Eg-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen:
I became sold on replacement focusing screens when I got about half my shots out of focus when using the manual focus Zeiss lenses on my 7D. Since Canon doesn't make a replaceable screen for the 7D, I went with a KatzEye screen, and it worked beautifully.
Fast forward to my new 5D MkII and I suspected I'd want a replacement screen for it too. The stock screen is better than the 7D stock screen, but it still is a little vague for manual focus, especially at apertures under 2.0.
I thought about getting another KatzEye, but saw the Canon Eg-S and since it was cheaper, and a friend had used a similar screen on his 1Ds with Leica R glass, I thought it was worth a try. Unlike the KatzEye, the Canon screen doesn't have a split prism and microprism ring. While these are useful for the 7D they do make the image darker and you have to adjust exposure if doing spot metering.
On the 5D, the Eg-S is very bright, and images just snap into focus, without having to find a vertical line to use the split prism on. Also, for the 5D there is a menu adjustment that takes into account the difference in light transmission and adjusts the exposure accordingly. Nice.
Overall I have to say I like it better than the KatzEye and it works just as well, perhaps better. Plus the absence of the split prism and microprism ring is less distracting. Canon says the new screen is a bit darker than the standard one, but I haven't really noticed much difference other than the easier focusing.
Now, I have to admit I'm a big fat chicken with tiny bits, so I had my friend with the 1Ds, who'd installed screens before, install this one. It looked pretty easy to do, but I'm happy he did it, because I can be a bit ham-fisted.

Things pop into focus much better with this screen. DOF for fast lenses is rendered more accurately in the viewfinder. Still a little tough to manual focus at f/1.4 for wide angle lenses, but definitely an improvement over stock screen.

I use this with my canon and zeiss macro lenses. Why have sharp lenses if you can't have top notch control over focus? You can beep the AF all day (you can also buy an automatic rifle and call yourself a sharpshooter). This screen really improves focus and is well worth the money.
