After about a month of use I am still on the first ink set that came with the computer so this ink seems to be lasting me a while and I am printing every week for school assignments that are 16x20 range.

I have been using dye based inks and printers from HP, Epson and Canon for over 10 years and have typically printed on glossy media. My interests now lie in printing on art papers and exploring the extra texture. The 5100 has dedicated blacks for true B&W prints and I have found them to do exceptionally well on Canon canvas. Great Dmax. Working with matte media typically reduces the available gamut, but other character of the print can be brought out.
I have tried 3rd party inks in my printers and always gone back to the original inkset from the manufacturer. This provides very repeatable color reproduction and print life. I do use media from other vendors (Hahnemuhle, Ilford, others) with good success.
I do not have a feel yet for what the cost per print is as I typically use the machine for short runs and a lot of ink is used in charging and cleaning each time the unit is turned on.

I think I save about $50 buying all the cartridges at once. Depending on the prints, you'll still use more of one than the other so will end up buying individual cartridges.

[...] Genuine Canon quality. These were very easy to replace and work great in the printer. The 130ml size is nice as the original ink cartridges that came with the printer were only 90ml. When these run out I will be ordering again from B&H!

I have been happy with the Lucia inks. I've used Epson in the past and the Lucia are just as good.
