The 160GB HyperDrive COLORSPACE UDMA Multimedia Storage / Player is a high-capacity stand-alone storage device with a plethora of state-of-the-art data-management and security tools. Now, you can back up and view your memory cards without computers or external power. The device boasts 160GB of storage capacity on a user-replaceable SATA HDD, and accepts 14 different memory card types, including Compact Flash Type I / II and SD/SDHC/MMC/MS/xD. Its high-speed USB 2.0 interface offers 32 MB/s transfer speed, and the device performs backup at 40 MB/s.
The COLORSPACE's sleek form-factor and powerful feature-set offers digital photographers peace of mind, speed of operation, and the ability to travel light and move quickly. This compact hand-held device ensures a seamless workflow by allowing photographers to shoot without hesitation; JPEG or RAW files can be transferred at 2.0GB/minute on a single battery charge.
Inside the HyperDrive, S.M.A.R.T. constantly monitors the hard drive's status for potential issues. A built-in data recovery tool can be employed to recover formatted, deleted, lost, or corrupted files from most memory cards. The integrity of each data-backup is checked by the CRC copy-verification system, and Data-Synchronization allows the HyperDrive to mirror its contents onto another HyperDrive or an external hard drive via USB OTG host technology. Incremental Backup allows the transfer of new images, while skipping over all of the previously saved data.
The HyperDrive's integral 3.2" QVGA LCD screen delivers vibrant color, contrast, and sharpness for on-site editing and proofing. Viewing RAW files of any type on the HyperDrive is never a problem, thanks to its RAW decoder; virtually any camera's raw file can be displayed, including those from medium-format digital backs. The zoom feature allows the shooter to confirm focus and overall sharpness, while the comprehensive R/G/B histogram can be accessed to provide exposure level information.

Semi pro photog for nearly 30 years, I love digital. I hate downloading and backing up files. The speed of both downloading cards with the Colorspace UDMA and the subsequent backing up of the Colorspace allows me to have 2 copies my files in less time than I could download from CF card to my computer.
The reasons this product didn't get 5 stars from me are:
1. The clunky case design could be made more sleek and ergonomic with rounded corners and some contour.
That's it, the only complaint at this time. Of coarse a key pad or better yet a touch screen would make this awesome, it would likely make it much more expensive.

I basically use this product to back up memory cards while I'm in the field. The interface is very non-intuitive, that's my biggest complaint. It backs up your cards pretty fast though and for that reason worth the money. It's pretty slow as far as viewing images. If it's worth the price for you to be able to back up cards while away from a computer, then get it. Haven't had any errors yet. Overall a good product. I guess I'm just used to a nice clean Mac interface, the pseudo PC interface makes me angry when I look at it. The only reason I have not returned this product is that it is much smaller and cheaper than taking a laptop into the field, especially rough terrain/conditions, etc.

Use the product to simply make sure that don't run into a card that either gets misplaced or damaged. The convenience of being able to just plug card in and feel secure is worth the [$]. Don't think it's necessary to buy the 'high-end' $800-900 products with better screen, etc. This one serves the purpose!

Shot a 5 day annual meeting and had to supply the Show Daily with images from the lectures and events. While shooting I would down load one cameras cards to the Colorspace while shooting with the other camera. The incremental back up allowed different cards to be deposited in the same folder. Between assignments I would drop off the Colorspace to the editor and he would pull the shots he wanted for the paper. I still had the original cards for safe keeping and didn't have to drag a laptop with across the convention ctr.
Down loads from cards were quick. The user interface is crude. Movement in and through the menus is linear, so getting back to the top menu means you have to retrace your steps one by one to get back to the top. The black buttons on the front have icons on them for Menu, Back, Enlarge, and Reduce but the icons are only visible in good light, after a while you will learn where each is but till then you will need good light to read them.
Battery life was great I moved over 84 Gb of data and only lost one bar on the power meter. When plugged in to a computer the unit will charge. If you are going to use this for a job get it 2 weeks early so that you learn all the idiosyncrasies of the user interface. I ended up shutting it down more then once trying to get back to the top menu, no files were lost.
This would also be great as a backup system for a trip you didn't bring a laptop.

I use this product to back up footage. I then take it and bring the footage onto my computer directly from this drive so I don't have to import several separate CF cards.
It is a great idea and would be very helpful... if it worked.
The battery is terrible. I sent it in to get fixed a while ago and they finally sent it back two weeks later. It is still unable to hold a charge long enough for me to use it... even when it is plugged into the wall. The car charger they sent with it has never worked at all.
I would strongly recommend NOT purchasing this product.

Recently went to Africa and shot heaps and the Colorspace UDMA was just awesome to have available to back up all the special pics. Interface is a little clumsy but once I had read the instructions and used it a little was very easy to navigate. Backs up video as well which is great, although you cannot playback on the device.
Also comes with a car charger connection which is great for when you are out in the bush and not near any powerpoints. Though in saying that i backed up about 30GB and 30mins of browsing with no need to charge so battery life seemed very good.

A great solution for field backup. Takes cards and connects to Ipad/laptop for better viewing and processing. The controls are a little bulky but easy to use and understand right out of the box.
I bought the 160GB drive but I will get a second one, box only and put one of their recommended drives, either 500 or 750GB. A good solution for inexpensive backup.
I would and have recommended these devices.

-Provides relatively quick backup of images in a field environment-The OTG assessory only works intermittently and is very tempormental; mine as well as a friend's unit no longer work....meaning I can no longer back up files directly from the Colorspace device to another external HDD (the importance of that capability is made clear below).-I recently returned from a trip to Africa. I used the Colorspace to backup all my photos. Luckily I also backed them up on my laptop computer. When I returned home the Colorspace device no longer recognized the HDD. I removed the HDD and verified the files are still there, but for some reason the Colorspace device cannot see the HDD.[...].-Bottom line, when it works, it is okay....nothing special. However, I would never trust this (or any other device for that matter) as my sole means of backing up files.-My recommendation to buy this device is made with hesitation since the unit I own, as well as one owned by a friend, display similar shortfalls. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of other options out there at this time.

I'm starting to do more documentary projects that require a large amount of footage, and stopping the shoot to dump cards//having an assistant dump for me isn't a viable option. This UDMA storage unit is a really helpful tool, but not without its faults.
+: Small and convenient, comes with a belt holster (!), speedy transfer rates, long battery life
-: Clunky menu, relatively long boot up time, NO VIDEO PLAYBACK, NO FILE SIZE CONFIRMATION
The last two are in caps because those are features I need, so I don't see myself using this unit in the future. Great starter unit, though.

this product is really nice, I use it to clear my memory for the camera (canon 7D) and use it again instead of buying another memory card that will cost 300$.it transfer the pictures and your videos really fast and you can review them and browse your pictures through the device. the only downside is you can't play your videos through the HyperDrive, but it doesn't matter you can later transfer them to your computer and watch them.in the end I love this product a lot and I recommend it.

Used for field storage of two 32GB sdhc cards , allowing for continuous storage while the shoot continues. The interface is a little tedious, but once you get use to it, you can navigate fairly fast. The key pads should have been highlighted in white, for easier viewing.

Used in conjunction with a Canon 5D Mark II and Sandisk Extreme 32GB CF card. I purchased this because I needed to expand on the 32GB when doing video in the field.
The 32GB of video transferred using UDMA method in a touch over 15 minutes which enabled the spare smaller CF to keep working whilst waiting.
Whilst the device itself does not enable playback of the video files (but it does view the CR2 raw) it still backs up everything on the card.
Although the interface looks a tad outdated as others have said, I think that how something looks is not as important as how something operates.
Because it has done exactly what I need it to do I rate this 5 stars

A mostly great product that gets bogged down in some of the details. Mostly the interface, which is retro clunky, Windows 95-ish. Downloading to a computer is also more involved than what you would expect these days (and you must use a direct-to-board USB, you can't use a hub). And the case and drive bay don't promise much shock resistance.
On the plus side, any of the units is easily upgradable to a larger drive (I actually bought the shell and supplied my own drive), so it can grow with your needs.
Overall, a very compact method of card back-up; with one of these and a pair of decent sized cards, you can really capture an event or trip without a lot of extra, bulky equipment.

I purchased the HyperDrive COLORSPACE UDMA for a trip to Paris. I did not want to carry a laptop, but still wanted a way to backup my photos. This unit performed beyond my expectations. Each evening I loaded a SD card and backed up just the new photos from that day. Upon returning home, I connected the drive to my computer and had all my photos loaded in no time, without swapping multiple SD cards. I found the screen to be more than adequate for browsing photos. A very useful product!

When traveling or when shooting a great deal of pictures this is a great way to either backup your cards or empty your cards and continue to shoot.
I have used the recovery function and saved images from corrupted cards. This is my second HyperDrive.
I now shoot with them on jobs and hand them off at the end of the night to my assistant who processes the images from the day while I shoot the following day. I can then alternate between them and turn projects around quickly for my clients.
