The Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera features an APS-C sized 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor for superb quality images and the latest DIGIC 4 Image Processor to provide superior color reproduction, and improved ISO capabilities for uncompromised shooting even in the dimmest situations. It also features a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor, supercharged Live View Function with Face Detection Live mode, plus a number of automatic Image Correction settings and HDMI output.
The 15.1-megapixel image sensor delivers ultra-detailed images and the redesigned photo diodes and microlenses of the sensor extend its light gathering capabilities to ensure improved high ISO performance and low noise. Furthermore, the camera's ISO sensitivity is an astounding 3200 with expanded sensitivity to an ultra-sensitive 12800. The Integrated Cleaning System includes a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit with a fluorine coating to improve the camera's image quality by helping to reduce, repel and remove unwanted dust from the sensor. Plus, stubborn particles can be removed automatically in post-production with Dust Delete Data and Canon's included Digital Photo Professional software.
The 50D is incredibly fast thanks to the DIGIC 4 processor - it allows for up to 6.3 fps continuous shooting, in bursts of up to 90 JPEG images (with a UDMA CF card). Furthermore, Canon's wide area AF system uses 9 individual cross type sensors, so stunning action sequences can be captured - even in low-light conditions - making the EOS 50D particularly suited to sports and wildlife shooting. The DIGIC 4 processor also delivers 14-bit image processing, for smooth gradation and natural-looking colors - as well as ensuring ultra-fast startup times and near-instant image review after shooting.
The 3.0" Clear View VGA LCD (920,000 pixels) provides an extra-large and wide angle-of-view image review, with plenty of clarity for accurate focus checks in playback. By switching to Live View mode - which displays a real-time image on the LCD - photographers can enjoy simplified shooting from awkward angles, or connect to a PC for remote shooting. In addition, the Live Mode offers three ways to auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and Face Detection Live AF, which optimizes focus based on faces detected in the frame - for fast, spontaneous portraiture. The camera even offers HDMI output for viewing images on an HDTV - directly from the camera.
Even with all of these high powered features, the EOS 50D features Canon's renowned intuitive EOS menu system, along with a Quick Control screen, for instant access to the most commonly-changed settings. There is also a Creative Auto mode that offers automatic focus and exposure - while still allowing the user to add creative 'tweaks' to settings such as background sharpness. Altogether the Canon EOS 50D is an excellent product for advanced amateur photographers and entry-level professionals.
The included Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens is a lightweight, compact all-purpose "standard" zoom lens that has been designed specifically for digital photography. Ideal for travel, mid-range nature/wildlife and general photography, the lens provides a 5x wide-angle to tele coverage equivalent to a 28-135mm lens in 35mm format and features Canon's optical Image Stabilizer technology, which provides up to 3-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds. The ring-type USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) allows for both fast and silent AF, as well as full-time manual focus when in the AF mode.

I've had this camera for about 6 weeks now and I'm very happy with it. The kit lens has also proven to be a good choice for me.
I've had Canon products for years but this is my first DSLR, so I took the time to read the manual and learned a few things. Once I got the hang of the controls and how they interact with the different menus, I was able to change settings pretty quickly on the fly. It's amazing what you get this camera to do if you take the time to work with it and learn it. My favorite feature is the Quick Control Screen which puts all of the features that I need right on the LCD screen so I can quickly change aperture, shutter, ISO, WB, bracketing, flash exposure comp, drive mode, image quality, metering mode, and focus point, and probably some other things I'm forgetting. The LCD is large and fairly bright which makes it easier to navigate all the controls.
The most remarkable thing I've noticed is the low noise at high ISO, I've had it up to 1600 and gotten exceptional images. AI Servo works flawlessly and I was able to do a 10 shot burst in RAW mode (might have been able to get more shots, I can't remember). I recommend the SanDisk Extreme III cards in order to do this.
When I first got it, I was a little intimidated by the size and weight. But I'm getting used to it and haven't had any problems with tired arms yet. I am considering upgrading my tripod however to handle the extra weight.
Battery life has been good. Of course, this suffers when you are using Live View, so I only use that for manual focusing on macro shots. I haven't used the software yet that came with it, I've just been downloading straight to the computer into PS Camera RAW.
Overall an excellent camera, I haven't found any flaws and it was a great investment.

I spent a few weeks looking into a camera and a lens. Wanted to get something that would fit in my budget for right now, and for something that would be a good purchase. Took it out the day i got it and took some photos in low light, and they came out awful. Noisy and blurry. The IS on the lens doesn't help it at all. It's much better with out it. All my photos are noisy even at ISO 100. Unless your close to the subject the focus is a joke. I would recommend the camera body, but not the lens.

Comments about Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera with 17-85mm IS USM Lens:
I've owned this camera for two weeks and so far I'm pleased. It is lightweight, yet loaded with professional level features. The image quality equals cameras at twice its price and it offers a great deal of versatility with regard to shooting modes and adaptability to different situations. The on camera flash is powerful enough for everyday situations and many professional applications. My only quarrel with it is that its battery isn't adaptable to other Canon digital SLRs such as the Mark series.

Bought this as an upgrade to my beloved 350D, and everything about this camera is awesome. Those that speak about softness are insane. Learn to use it well and this camera is more than perfect for the prosumer, semi-pros. Heck even the pros use this camera.

Comments about Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera with 17-85mm IS USM Lens:
I use the body lens combo as a second camera to my 1DS MK11. I am a pro Photographer that shoots 50 events per year and 200 portraits per year.
Good file size, good optics and sharper handheld with IS than my 17-40L at shutter speeds UNDER 1/60th. Above 1/60 the 17-40L is sharper. (I did side by side lens tests to verify) Build quality of lens seems good. I'll know more in a year. I picked 50D even tho 60D was just released as the 60D has the "vari-angle" screen which is just one more moving part that can break. Slicing the same size sensor into 18mp vs 15mp accomplishes nothing in my world. 8mp from the same size sensor produces perfect 20x30 prints. Noise at higher ISOs about the same as previous models (30D - 40D) maybe a little better. Autofocus with the 17-85 lens is ok but the 17-40 is a rocket.

We also own a 40D. We found the 50D to be a lot sharper than the 40D. I was never happy with the sharpness of the 40D.I shoot in RAW and found there is very little "processing" to do with the 50D - color is right on.

Comments about Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera with 17-85mm IS USM Lens:
Although the Canon 50D is my first DSLR I have so far found it to be intelligently designed, with most functions intuitive. A learning curve is certainly indicated here.
Besides normal photography, I plan to use this camera for astrophotography, beginning with clock-driven imaging with the camera's own lens. I also plan telescopic photography of the Moon, planets and deep-sky objects.
So far I've very happy with the 50D and haven't uncovered any significant "negatives" except the tendency to drain the battery quickly on 'bulb setting.

Comments about Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera with 17-85mm IS USM Lens:
I'm wiring this review around 1 month after purchasing my 50D. This is my second DSLR (upgraded from 350D) camera and I love the features when comparing with my previous camera. I'm happy with the camera and the KIT lens (17-85mm IS). I can say this is great for the value.
Actually I was looking for 40D (with my small budget). However, because of non availability I thought of going for 50D.
I really like "High ISO noise reduction" which is very helpful for me as I had to take a couple of shot indoor without flash, which I should not be missed anyhow. Further, 17-85mm IS lens is also helping me a lot when shooting indoor without flash.
"My Menu settings" is also a very good feature, I found it easy to customize and make shortcuts to the functions which I use frequently.
The features I like mostly
1. Long exposure noise reduction
2. High ISO speed noise reduction
3. Highlight tone priority
4. My Menu settings
Still I'm not happy with the weight of the camera. May be I was using a 350D for a couple of years.
This is an excellent camera for me and it's a great investment.

Semi-professional Photography. This camera is easy to use. I upgraded from an XTi and the controls take a bit of getting used to, not as straight forward as the XTi but after a little trial and error, I can change settings with ease.

I went from a rebel to the 50d and the improved image quality is just amazing. Don't know how I shot without it for so long! The camera is definitely a bit heavy, but it's worth it.
