I needed a universal remote that could operate my Cable box, DVD and stereo, which are all stored in a TV cabinet, without having to keep the cabinet doors open. The Harmony 900 is it! This remote works fantastic and I dont even have to point it at the TV to operate the equipment. This remote was very easy to setup, is easy to use and is super sleek. Oh and I cant say enough about B&H. Best price, [...]. No need to price shop on this one because you wont find a better price [...] on your order.

I recently upgraded from my Harmony One to the Harmony 900. I was totally happy with the Harmony One, however my new LCD is spamming IR on startup meaning my IR extender was useless for the first 5 minutes. So I decided to buy the 900, as it seemed much the same as the One but with RF support.

For all intents and purposes the 900 is MOSTLY like the Harmony One, which is a very good thing. Not to go into detail, but the Harmony One is an excellent remote for setting up devices through the web interface and programming startup actions. For more info have a look for a Harmony One review, as the 900 is mostly the same, except for lacking macro support (see below).

The 900 has 2 key improvements that I was looking for over the One - one is support for sending via RF and the other is coloured hard buttons. Both of these options work well on the 900 - the RF support lets you select which devices to control via RF and the 900 comes with 1 main blaster and 2 blaster extensions, whichi was perfect for the units in my cabinets. The coloured buttons also work well for devices which use them, though the trade off to squeeze the buttons in a slightly reduced direction button pad, mute and back buttons.

It's not all plain sailing though. 2 important options were added, however there are 2 problems that have been added by Logitech. The first is that the touch screen is markedly slower than the Harmony One. I have no idea why, as they do much the same thing, but the response speed and delays in the 900 are very apparent after just using the One. This is annoying in the same way as using an iphone 3 after the later OS upgrades. You know it shouldn't be like that but there's no way to fix it, so you have to live with it.

The other major omission is even less forgivable, which is that for some inexplicable reason Logitech has decided to not support programmable macros (or 'sequences' as they were called on the One). This seems truely bizarre on a remote aimed at higher end equipment. While you can use the activities to automate a bunch of stuff when you decide to do something (like watch tv or play a dvd), you also bind all your keys to this activity. If you just want to run a predefined sequence of actions that are generic across many activities (e.g. switch from your TV screen to the projector for whatever the current input is) you now can't do this - you have to either do it manually or set up every permutation of activity you have of input/output/device/etc which just isnt' feasible.

My final pain point is the lack of any migration option from my Harmony One. Despite being very close functionally, when I tried the 'replace remote' option through the setup application it wouldn't move all of my existing actions, bindings and device setup across. Instead I had to set it all up from scratch, which was quite a pain.

SUMMARY:
This is still a very good remote, but not as good as I was expecting. The bottom line is, unless you really need RF support (or the lack of hard coloured buttons really offends) then you are much better off with the cheaper, faster and more functional Harmony One. If it weren't for my IR problem that's what I'd still be using...

Comments about Harmony/Logitech Harmony 900 Advanced Universal Remote:

Initially, loved this remote. But, just after warranty expired, so did the remote! grrrrrr! For the high end price, we expected a unit that would last at least 2 years. If I could give this zero stars, I would.

Comments about Harmony/Logitech Harmony 900 Advanced Universal Remote:

I purchased this remote, found it east to program and use. But after 7 months the fast forward and play buttons became unresponsive. Called Logitech, they replaced it with no hassles. Then after another 5 or 6 months a few of the more used buttons again became unresponsive.

Called Logitech again but now the unit was out of warranty. Thank goodness for American Express. They double the manufacturers warrant and refunded my entire purchase price.

Warning.....my experience shows that the Harmony 900 is not built to last. I need to find a new remote, but at this point can't justify spending more money on the Harmony line. I may have to get a Pro Remote like the URC MX-980.

I've got a fairly tricky setup with devices on multiple floors and this remote handles it like a charm. The ability to fine-tune settings such as delays between commands really make it quite versatile.

The only feature I would wish for is if it could speak to other RF devices like the boxee.

Comments about Harmony/Logitech Harmony 900 Advanced Universal Remote:

I use this to connect my TV, AV Receiver, AppleTV, and BluRay player.

Once set up, it does what it's supposed to do. I can leave my other remote controls in a cabinet and just use one. Before I was lazy and didn't want to configure my AV receiver for watching TV so I just listened through the TV speakers. This let me use all my equipment to its fullest! Oh, and using a RF control and not having to point it directly at your components is a dream! Welcome to the 21st century! The ergonomics of the remote is great, and of the quality I'd expect from the company. Has a good feel, can use it in the dark.

It's not perfect though, a couple of times, one of devices didn't power on, but that could have been the position of my IR blaster. Also, it didn't get the timing right when switching my TV power on, then switching to AppleTV (but I think this can be tweaked). Also, the remote hangs during sync if you leave it plugged in for a minute or two after it tells you to remove it. I hear MAC support is bothersome too, but I set up on my PC. I've only had it a couple of weeks so can't vote for longevity. Also, it's pricey, but the lowest price solution I've seen that can do all this with RF.

In the end, I'd buy it again, but shame on you Logitech. You have obviously have no real competition in this area, thus no motivation to improve, but I'd expect your software support to be better given your reputation.

Finally I was told by their phone support to go find a Windows machine. Ridiculous.

We use the remote to control our TV, A/V receiver, DVD player, Verizon FIOS box and Apple TV. It works great and is much improved over the Harmony 890 which we had before this remote for about 2 years. The touch screen is a nice feature and the channel skipping problem we had with the 890 seems to be gone with the 900. The programming does take a bit of time, but is really not that hard considering everything the remote can do when you are done.

Able to finally combine all devices onto one remote - family can now watch TV or DVD or play games with one touch setup - Best of all, no more looking for all the remotes to just watch TV!

Easy to add additonal activities and also to fine tune them.

Did lock up during first programming attempt but has worked flawlessly ever since.

We expected it might be a lot of work to set up considering the older preamp we have. The Harmony 900 was super easy to set up on our PC and our living room now has just 1 very efficient and effective remote. ergonomic to use too. only thing we couldn't connect was the Roku, but not a big issue.

Was considering buying an Ipad to use as a Universal remote but bought the harmony instead - very pleased with my Choice!

The ease in which the software downloads and configures the remote is impressive. I am impressed with how easy it was to configure, once useful feature is the ability to learn commands, e.g. I don`t use my TV`s internal speakers and have my TV and satellite PVR connected to my AV receiver. I have configured the remote to mute the TV and control the volume of the receiver when I select the satellite receiver as a device.
The RF extenders are great, I thought these would only be useful if my components were behind closed doors in a cabinet, but I find it`s great that I don`t have to point the remote directly at a component in order to use them...

No negative sides to this remote so far....all other remotes are in drawers now and my wife can easliy use it!

Comments about Harmony/Logitech Harmony 900 Advanced Universal Remote:

This is my second Harmony remote, replacing my 550 that I've had for years. The main reason for switching was to get the included RF system which replaced my hodge-podge setup before. My equipment is in the basement so RF is a necessity for me.

Unfortunately, the RF performance of this unit did not meet expectations. The components are about 30-35ft away in a closet and the remote didn't work in this situation (RF receiver in the closet). I am fortunate to have CAT5 running throughout the house and was able to place the RF receiver in the same room as the TV, then connect one of the IR blasters in the closet via CAT5. This setup works great since the RF now only needs to go <10ft.

So, if you have everything in the same room or are able to run a blaster over another wire to where you're equipment is, then this is a good solution.

Being a long term fan of Logitech products, I purchased the Harmony 900 during my recent visit to B&H New York, USA and brought it to India. I was in for a shock...it does not connect to internet through Mac with latest OS, Snow Leopard or Lion. Is their technical department sleeping?! Have they been to Apple stores to see how fast the Macs are selling. I am sitting with a very expensive unusable remote waiting for Logitech to issue the necessary patch. Guys, wake up and act. And ethically. you should start mentioning in all your ads, product packing and website this limitation till you find a solution to it.

Bought this for a tech savvy husband...Very easy to program...even easier to use...loses a star for the fact I hate that it does not have a battery option.

Comments about Harmony/Logitech Harmony 900 Advanced Universal Remote:

Pro: I've got a pretty complicated setup with several receivers in the basement controlling video sources and several rooms' audio, and this remote is able to easily control them all. The interface is awesome, the buttons feel good, and the balance is nice. The recharging station means the remote has a home and hopefully won't go missing.
Con: Definitely has a learning curve to the programming; if you're not a gadget-type, you might want to solicit help in the setup. But once it's set up no other remote can compare.

This is one of the best remotes I have ever used.
The RF is really cool and for the most part works well. I am using it to run a whole house A/V system. It is extremely easy to program! It is also so customizable it will do whatever you need. The only problem is the range. It only works if the RF receiver is in close range. I put it in the basement and it would not work upstairs. So I had to put the receiver upstairs and lengthen the mini blaster wires to go to our rack.

This remote was so easy to set up and has a big screen to show you exactly what you would like to use it for. It replaced three remotes in our house and made it possible for us to finally put our cabinet door back on our entertainment unit. I am so happy that I finally bought this remote. It is worth every penny.
