Designed with the aspiring film maker in mind, the Panasonic HDC-HS300 120GB Full HD Camcorder is the company's top of the line consumer offering for 2009. First off, you can record up to 50 hours of full 1920 x 1080 high definition video to the HDD with the option to store overflow footage to SD/SDHC memory cards. Capturing all that beautiful video would be the three 1/4.1" CMOS sensors which add up to total 9.15MP, named "3MOS", by Panasonic. The sensors also record 10.6MP stills and 8.3MP when recording both video and still images simultaneously.
Other features attractive to those looking to hone their video skills include microphone and headphone terminals, which are a must for getting high quality audio. In addition, an electronic viewfinder and manual control ring give you even more flexibility. Another plus would be compatibility with Mac for editing in iMovie. The HDC-HS300 rounds out its features with solid optics, including a Leica Dicomar lens, 12x optical zoom, and Advanced O.I.S.

First all the camera has a beautiful image and lcd. I am using it with a Cam Caddie and a Jag35 and I am getting great results. The low light is a little weird and it doesn't like it too low. The image stabilizer is very good and the best I have seen.
The DOF isn't all too great or shallow so I suggest a 35mm adapter if that's what you want.
The focus wheel is such a great relief. FINALLY a company make a full focus wheel on a consumer hd camera. This is actually the main reason I chose over the S10/S100. The next factor was the full fledged hot shoe, and the 120gb hd.
The 120 GB hard drive is going so well! I don't have to worry about running out of space ever. Then in play back you have all your cuts laid out and you can play them cut by cut and delete the ones you don't want.
The touch screen is very nice as well and you can get to everything so easily.
And yes I do have to say that this camera compares well with the XH A1.

This is the first video camera I've owned in a long time, purchased to document the milestones of our newborn's life and have been really pleased with its performance so far. The zoom range is more than adequate for most purposes. The image stabilization seems to work very well and coupled with the image stabilizing in iMovie the video looks really great.
The still photos, coupled with the built in flash, leave much to be desired for. Have not tested with out door daylight images yet. Importing into iMovie also took an especially long time when set on the highest quality setting. Haven't tried just copying files straight off the camera into a folder on the computer yet.
All-in-all, we are thouroughly pleased with this product.

Picture quality is a+. I may need the directional mic to capture more individualized sound. built in mic captures so much sound. Very portable. So far so good. May be 5 stars before i'm done.

This little guy is great, the low light performance is some of the best you'll get at this price range, and you can get the files into final cut with the log and transfer function, the camcorder is 1080i, but at 60 frames per second, so when deinterlaced it's 1080p at 30 frames per second. You can count on the battery lasting for a little over an hour, which is fine for the stock battery, but is a pain when you realize that the AC port is in the battery cavity, meaning you can't charge the battery while it's in the camera or switch to AC power while recording, but picking up a couple 3 hour batteries pretty much solves this. The video quality has been really good, from videos of welding, dancers, plays, the moon, and shots with studio lighting, the combination of a good auto mode and plenty of manual controls including a focus ring make it easy to work in a variety of situations. I have edited the footage with both premiere CS4 and Final cut studio 3.

My company is just getting into shooting videos for the Web. We wanted a higher end HD consumer camcorder with lot of manual controls and this one fit the bill exactly - we love it.

We use this camera to film our sermons and with all of its ports we are also piping it via HDMI to TV's in the nursery's.
At this point I have found zero bad about this camera, and numerous things that are great, facial recognition, HD output, huge harddrive, its pretty amazing the number of features at this price.

I use it to film for my tv show and its great.
The quality is amazing, and you only need an Azden WMS-Pro wireless mic and a good tripod with a fluid head or a steady. To capture, I recommend a Blacmagic Intensity Pro to capture hdmi, because transforming avchd is a pain in you now where. I bought a Raynox 0.66 lens and a hood.
Buy another battery just in case you need to film a lot, and another HD for your computer, I filled up 120gb in a blink of an eye!
Its small, lightweight, and perfect for an averyday use.
I´m really happy with my hs300, and for this amount of money, its the best choice.

I've shot this camera for several months as an outdoor videographer. It's light, easy to handle and has simple menus. I like the mic inputs, the viewfinder, the manual focus ring, the zoom-focus check, and its decent low-light performance.
I don't like the fact that it's 1080i, NOT 1080p. You lose resolution when the footage is displayed on progressive scan devices. Unfortunately, that information is virtually absent from all promo materials on the HS300.

Comments about Panasonic HDC-HS300 120GB Full HD Camcorder:
I bought this camera to create better-than-average home movies in HD. I work for a video production company and I was sick of borrowing bulky, heavy HD cameras to film my kids.
The camera is a lot smaller and lighter than I thought it would be. You can easily stuff it in a coat pocket and forget it's there. The picture quality is amazing, and the 120GB on-board storage is absolutely fantastic.
On the down side, the audio quality is VERY bad and the camera doesn't do very well in low-light situations. Not suprising given the small size of the camera, lens, and sensors.
Although, in the right hands, this camera could easily be used to create some phenomenal professional work with the right lighting and audio equipment.
Overall, a great little camera!

This is a great HD camera. I mainly use it for family functions and a few small video projects. Everything on the camera is easy to use and pretty self explanatory. The one thing I don't really care for is the touch screen display. It takes a little getting used. The 24p is awesome and to think this isn't even a prosumer camera.

Comments about Panasonic HDC-HS300 120GB Full HD Camcorder:
I have only had my Panasonic HDC-HS300 Camcorder for about 3 weeks and it is unbelievable! I have used it to digitize all my late grandfather's 8mm movies (25 reels) totaling about 10 hours of video, recorded a reenactment of the 1835 Dade Massacre, and got some incredible video of a herd of deer feeding in my mother's backyard in northern Georgia. The low light capability of the camcorder simply amazed me while recording the deer. The best features of this camcorder are its ability to go completely manual for exposure, white balance and focusing. The "3MOS" system does produce some incredible colors in my videos both indoors and outdoors. I simply love this camcorder! Buy it!!

This camera was purchased to be used as a second camera during production of commercial HD videos in conjunction with a Panasonic HVX-200. It's image quality is excellent, and it's very versatile when it comes to uploading either to PC or MAC for editing. No downsides.

I have only had this camera a couple of weeks but so far have really enjoyed it. It is light weight and easy to handle. It is pretty self explanatory to use. I do wish it's view finder lifted for easier use. It extends some but I like those that also lift up.

Comments about Panasonic HDC-HS300 120GB Full HD Camcorder:
When I took this baby out of the box I couldn't imagine it was capable of all the things it said in the promotional literature. It seemed so tiny compared to the camcorders of last generation. But the reality has exceeded all my expectations!
I use a camcorder in my work as a professional motivational speaker and corporate trainer. I wanted hi-def video with excellent optics, the ability to handle a standard remote microphone and a large internal hard drive for plenty of storage. My research led me to the Panasonic line and I've been thrilled from Day 1.
Beyond the core features I mentioned, the three things I love the most so far are:
1. The automatic face-focus. No matter where I move around the stage...this camcorder keeps me in focus. Fantastic! And it will compensate for backlighting which is often a big problem when you are in front of brightly lit scenery.
2. Super design & lighweight, but sturdy construction. Everything is laid out with intelligence and it is a very solid machine. It fits easily into my computer bag for carrying onto planes and I can use a light-weight tripod or even a flexible grip "Gorilla-type" tripod for unique shooting angles.
3. High quality stills. I love my Nikon DSLRs, but for the family vacation or my daughter's dance recital...the Panasonic is an all-in-one powerhouse! I just grab it whenever I'm going out the door and I know I'll be ready for almost any situation.
Minor annoyances so far are the on-screen menu. My fat fingers often hit the wrong selection. But Panasonic gives you a simple stylus device you can use so it's really my fault.
The other is the amount of time it takes to upload the video to my laptop. I just switched to a Mac so I might be doing something wrong here. But so far it's taking me as long to upload the file as it did to shoot the gig.
Overall I am very happy. It wasn't cheap, but if you're looking for high quality and a full-featured camcorder you can take anywhere...this baby is a homerun!
