I purchased this scanner to scan PAPER FILES that I've had in storage, but occasionally need to get to. I am "going green" in my life and wanted to get rid of the space that the paper files were taking up.
I own a Mac Pro computer. I read the reviews that the scanner could scan 40pp per minute. That is true, if you are scanning the document(s) to a .jpg file with 300px resolution. In my case, I knew that I wanted the documents in Adobe Acrobat format and KNOWING THAT AHEAD OF TIME that Adobe Acrobat program in memory intensive, I didn't expect to get 40pp per minute when scanning to this type of format.
I did have issues, initially, installing the GT-S80 Scanner software ONLY because I have another Epson scanner attached to the computer (flat-bed picture scanner). I had to uninstall the software for falt-bed for the GT-S80 Scanner software to install and work properly. This was resolved by calling Epson and having the technician walk me through the steps of properly installed BOTH software packages on my Mac. Took all of 10 minutes, tops.
The scanner gives the options of resolution, single or double-sided, auto-document detect (B&W, picture, newspaper, etc.). I usually leave it on AUTO because of the amount of paper (mainly B&W printed documents) that was needing to be scanned.
When increasing the resolution (from 300 to 600), as to be expected, I noticed slower scanning times. This was NOT an issue for me as I needed certain documents to be CRYSTAL CLEAR. People REALLY should not expect this scanner to scan at 40pp per minute with HIGH resolution (600 px) into a PDF file. Please be realistic in your expectations! LOL! If that is what you are looking for, then I'd suggest you invest ADDITIONAL money and get a floor-standing copy/scanner/fax or whatever. :)

I purchased this scanner after much research. I had long been a fan of Epson products and had found them to be of good quality with excellent tech support. The scanner that I received was apparently defective and when I called Epson, I reached someone who appeared to be an outsourced tech limited to the information that she could read from a script. [...] insisted that it was not an issue with the scanner...that it isn't possible for the scanner equipment to be defective. I reached no resolution with her. Fortunately for me, B & H Video was very accomodating and we arranged for a return/replacement. The machine that replaced the original DOES WORK, consequently confirming that it was NOT a software issue. Epson...what happened to your formerly excellent technical service? As for the machine itself, the replacement feeds well and the image is of decent quality.

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S80 Scanner:
It took me a while to install all drivers and software but after that it work beautifully.
The thing that I don't like about it, is with the messy paper it's kinda hard to scan many documents. Other than that I like it.

The machine scans quickly at 200 dpi, but takes a long time to process and save the document. Quality is a little light also. Overall okay, but expected more for the price.

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S80 Scanner:
I use this for relatively high volume scanning for OCR conversion. It works incredadably well considering the price. I use it for work that should require multiple thousand dollar device but this little device holds its own. With that said its feeding mechanism is its weak point. It is a little rough on the pages, and it doesn't keep originals clean after a lot of use. All and all a very good economical and functional device.

I have bean playing for a couple of hours everyday for a week now, with this unit. To see what the different setting will do and how they effect the output in preparation to scan about 20,000 pages of genealogy work. I have never used a document scanner before and this scanner has bean a bean a pleasure to use. It is vary easy to use. It works write out of the box, once the control software is loaded on the computer. And that is easy as well.
I have bean testing it to see how well it reads black ink, blue ink and pencil with different colored backgrounds. It has done a vary good job of separating the foreground (the writing) and the colored backgrounds.
If their was a con to using this unit. It would be the Auto black page detector. It is not as sensitive as I would like it in detecting small quantities of light pencil writing on a page. But, that, I think would be hard for any machine.
With the inclosed OCR software, is dose a fantastic job of reading type and converting it to a text document. With hand writing, only the post office has software for that, that I know of. You just convert those to a image file and save them or put them all in a PDF file.
I recommend spending a little more if you can and getting this unit. I think it is well worth it!

I purchased this scanner to convert my home office to a paperless record keeping system. The scanner is fast, has lots of software and works well with my Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 software. I like that it has a small footprint.

Comments about Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S80 Scanner:
It was easy to set up on an older system. Easy to use once installed. It is being used to scan in all size documents (invoices, etc.) for digital archiving.
One thing I don't like and am looking into how I can change it is that when you put in the selected name it has information that must be part of it that I have absolutely not control about. This has one of two options and I feel there needs to be a third one (without the required information from the first two).
Otherwise it starts up and scans in quickly and provides a very clear scanned image.
