Got this camera a week ago and wasn't sure if I would like it or not. The verdict is that I love it! Great quality video, shoots decent stills, built in light/flash, compact, loaded with manual features (focus, exposure, aperture etc..).
Couldn't decide if I wanted a tape based camera or a file based. File transfers on this camera are very fast, 20 minutes of footage transfers in about 5 minutes. One major drawback is that you must connect power to the wall before transferring files form internal memory. I would think you could still do it while on battery power, but you are forced to plug into the wall for this. You can record to an SD card and just pop the card into your computer if you so desire. The files edit well on my computer in Adobe Premiere CS4. I have not used the provided software for editing so I can't comment on it.
AVCHD is a processor intensive file format for playback and editing, be sure to find some sample clips to download before purchasing just to make sure your computer can handle them. Only one of the three computers in our house can play and edit them decently. I have my record quality set to XP+ which is the middle setting.
Great camera, great features I would recommend this to anyone needing a reasonably priced HD video camera.

I like to love this camera. I shot a outdoor wedding with it and it looked really good. I love that it has a mic input and a headphone input for recording audio. The battery life is not good but ALL cameras have that issue they want you to buy the extended battery. I got a 4 hour generic on ___
for $15.
I'd say the only issue is the poor grainy effect you easily get with lower light conditions. Even at 12 noon in my office with the windows open the video can be grainy. Very sensitive. Also the focus is very slow as well as the shutter speed on auto. I wish I had gone with the HF10 and payed the extra dough. but all in all this camera works well for the price. Try one before you buy one. I will continue to use it for all my events, you just need to make sure you have a "good" on board light for the camera.

We switched from a DVD Camcorder to the Vixia Flash Camcorder so that we could upload videos to the web for training and documentation.
--Easily connects to a Mac & iMovie
--Compact size makes it easy to carry & use
--Flash memory is great..no more tapes or miniDVDs
--Non-proprietary external microphone input, so we could choose the best microphone setup to record speakers and presentations.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF20 Dual Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:
I have owned this for 3 months now, and I am very unhappy. Video files are stored in a proprietary *.MTS format making videos useless unless you want to burn to DVD or use the camera as a very expensive DVR.
You must use the included software to save videos to your hard drive which is very clunky, and doesn't have a way to convert to a more mainstream format like AVI, MPEG, or MP4. I can't even upload to YouTube!
I am very loyal to Canon, owning 3 still-cameras, so a move to video seemed like a no-brainer. Boy was I wrong! If I could do it over again, I wouldn't have bought this. Sure, the camcorder operates decent, takes good quality vids, BUT THE ONLY WAY TO SHARE IS THROUGH THE CAMERA OR A DVD?! That's a dealbreaker for me...

This camcorder is very easy to use right out of the box. It is a lightweight unit that doesn't feel big and obtrusive when shooting videos. The high definition is great and the LCD viewing pane is large and clear.

This camera was purchased for a church to be able to record Sunday Service and special events, as weddings. It performs very well in our setup, with the component video wired directly to a DVD recorder and a projection system, so that special moments, such as children choir can be displayed by the projection system. I can zoom to a persons face at 90 feet without using digital zoom. It is very small, since it doesn't have a tape or disk drive. Battery life is not an issue since we are always plugged in, but I tested it new to be over 1.3 hours continuous at high definition. With 32 gig of ram, we have no problem getting all the 1 hour service in the camcorder memory. The only down-side so far, if downloading to computer and then burning DVD's, you must use DVD-R according to the software.

This is my first HDTV camcorder and I must tell you I have been shopping around, reading reviews, watching youtube videos and this was the winner. I went with this camera for all the options, the built in hard drive, flash memory card and its price fit my budget.
Overall Very nice camcorder, size, design is 5 stars, quality and operation performance is 5 stars, picture quality is 5 stars for both stills and video.
Negative: I wish it had a night vision like my Sony hi8 does and opening/editing the files is cumbersome.
Low light videos are not horrible I give it 3 stars, I would recommend purchasing a light.
Downloading to PC is simple but opening and editing was a bit tricky because of the file format canon uses, so I purchased adobe premiere (you can also go with adobe elements much cheaper then the pro version)
Overall 4 stars would be 5 stars if the file format was something a bit more common.

I love it, its amazing. Need to have fast computer to play highest res of video that comes out of this camera! Canon doesn't provide the software 2 convert the .mts files to any other formats. Other than that it's the best camcorder. The videos and pictures come out great.

This is a backup handheld portable for those locations where there is no access with our larger camcorders. It is small, light weight, easy to handle with one hand, with an acceptable quality and zoom ratio.
The Optical image stabilization is only fair.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF20 Dual Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:
What an upgrade from my ancient Panasonic Mini DV! [...]! Will definitely recommend to friends and do business with them in the future. Loaded with features, and very user-friendly. I am very pleased with the picture quality; it is stunning. Low-light is not quite as bad as some reviews say, but isn't great either. The key is to use Cinema mode when filming in low-light conditions; this makes a notable difference. There are tons of manual settings or you can go fully automatic. Size is perfect and fits right in the palm of your hand. LCD also has a very sharp, bright picture. All cables are included except the HDMI. Has a remote! If you buy an extra battery (which you will need because the battery life is poor) that is not Canon, the battery meter doesn't work. Canon wants entirely too much money for batteries. If they would lower the price, people wouldn't go to third-party brands in the first place. This is the only reason I didn not give 5 stars. It is also kind of aggravating that the battery can only be charged ON the camera and only when it is OFF. Would make a lot more sense if it would also charge while powered on, like a laptop. Most of these are just a nuisance which you can live with. Be warned: Do not attempt to process video without a decent processor and LOTS of HDD space. I am running a Q8200 with 4GB RAM and Win 7 64-bit, and it gets a run for its money! Bundled software is useless. Win 7 has native AVCHD support, but you will need a strong editing program if you want to make HD video into regular DVD's without sacrificing much quality. You can burn AVCHD files straight to even a standard DVD and play it back on a blu-ray player. Download via USB is very slow. Bottom line: this camera delivers excellent HD video, and has a lot more features than similar models. I have owned many Canon products over the years; printers, still cameras and now this video camera, and I swear by them. Overall a thumbs-up from me!

I'm glad I went with HD Camera. The picture and sound are great. So far I've used it for wrestling tournaments and the zoom works fine from the stands. The 32GB internal memory is plenty, but I bought a couple 8GB cards incase I have more to video. The only problem is that the download and editing software does not work with Windows 7. I need to use my laptop which runs Vista. Hopefully they'll add Win7 compatibility soon.
