Sony HDR-XR200V 120GB High Definition Handycam Camcorder

The XR200V features a 1/5" Exmor CMOS sensor that captures 2.3MP video and 4MP stills, along with a professional quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens and a 2.7" wide touch panel LCD display. These functions along with the Optical SteadyShot image stabilization give you the tools to make great videos out of all your memories.
Sony doesn't stop there though; making shooting even easier would be the built-in GPS receiver and Map Index function that allow you to tag your shooting location as well as find video and still images fast for review and playback. Other convenient tools include Face Detection and Smile Shutter technology.

I'm moving up from a Sony HD-PC100 that is a miniDV tape based camcorder. This camera has a touch screen with great interface and easy to use menus. You can increase the overall size of the buttons on the screen by hitting the 'easy' button. It is priceless for me to be able to record footage and then simply upload them to my PC. After the upload to my PC it is extremely easy using the Sony Picture and Motion Browser software to create either DVD or Blu-ray disks. The GPS geo-tagging option is fun for about the first 15 mins. It would be very fun during a multi-stop European vacation or something. You can sort your photos and video clips by location. You can also sort your video and photo clips by a face! The face recognition function is also pretty impressive. The optional 3 watt video light is a must for perfect indoor, low-light video. Overall, highly recommended.

I used for a week, looks like I got defective piece. With Smile Shutter, face detection on, after couple of minutes recording it gets stuck in record mode, other functions does not work and you can't power it off. It might be a bug in software, other than that it is easy to use; you can get quality of video and pics in EASY mode. As manual said it does not take still photos when your subject smiles, even when shooting video.

I've been eyeing camcorders for awhile now and was weighing all the pros and cons between companies (sony, samsung, canon), and for whatever reason I kept coming back to the sony. The only reason why I was hesitant at first was because of the reviews on it being poor in low light but upon the recent sale of this product I figured it was something I was willing to sacrifice. Let me tell you it was so worth the money... low light wasn't even an issue, the camcorder performs exceptionally well and I'm very happy with my purchase. On/Off is a snap, just open the screen, ready to shoot in 1-2 seconds.
Easy set-up for novice users.
GPS is a neat, but not critical feature.
Small size is great for traveling.
Don't forget an extra battery and charger.
Software not compatible with our Mac but IMovie and IDVD handle it great.

I got this camcorder 2 weeks ago or so. I am very happy with the recording quality and the picture quality too. Althoug people everywhr complain about the video quality being grainy in the dark, I would say, it is quite good as compared to the amount of light I tried it in indoors. The device is small and sleek, and fits well into your hands. It comes with almost all the cable that I would need. The sound recording is amazingly good.
The battery life is a little disappointing, but since I do not have any other camcorder to compare it to, I am (still) pretty happy with the device.

Product is fairly easy to use for someone who is not completely tech savvy. Definately read the manual for night shooting. If you use the easy button it does not really look that great but with a couple of tweaks it was very good and little noticeable noise.
