Need a camera that can keep up with someone (you?) who's active, daring, and/or an occasional risk-taker? Then check out the Olympus Stylus Tough-8000. This is one incredibly durable digital camera; it's shock, water, freeze, and crush proof - ummm, ok - resistant. Don't go driving your Hummer over it, or tossing it into liquid nitrogen. It's not quite that rugged but it sure can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. Drop it, splash it, toss it - then pick it up and take a photo or make a movie. The Tough-8000 is ready, willing, and able to capture all those future memories and help you share them with friends and family.
For sportsters indulging in the wintery and aquatic types of activities - listen-up -Tap Control is about to change your life. Playback, shadow adjustments, and flash mode can all be activated by simply tapping (tapping is not smashing) the top, sides, or back of the camera. No need to pull off the gloves, or fumble for a button - just bop it!
At this point you're probably saying to yourself: "Hmm...this camera seems a lot like the Tough-6000". You would be right - it is very much like the Tough-6000, but it also has a crush-resistant LCD screen and higher resolution (12MP). With its enhanced durability and capture-performance, the Tough-8000 is in a class unto itself.
Shooting vistas or portraits? The Tough-8000 lets your creativity become a photographic reality. Your vision and intuition can finally come to fruition; whether it's a breathtaking scenic, or an intimate close-up. For those on-the-go shots we have two flavors of image stabilization: optical and digital. Use one or the other or both at the same time to keep those otherwise blurry photos sharp and clear.

Durable and reasonably fast for a point and shoot camera. Works well under water in the pool and at the beach. Flash is a bit bright but overall it takes great photos. Perfect for my wife with rough kids.

Took this camera out hiking and a storm started to roll in. The hike left me cold, soaked, and bruised but the camera worked fine. Then took it snowboarding yesterday wondering if camera would freeze up like my previous one (sony DSC-W50). Not a chance! The lens wouldn't even fog up! The tap feature is awesome as it kept me from having to remove my gloves in the cold.
Camera keeps my hands warm, easy to use, takes awesome quality photos, and keeps working even when I'm ready to give up.

Wanted a water proof camera for the beach. This one has all the features I need. I am not planning on dropping it to test out the promise of several feet of impact safety..hopefully! I love the mirror like case...can use it to put on lipstick.

The only problem is the viewfinder. Underwater it is hard to compose your photo, but for the price you have to expect some things aren't going to be like a more expensive camera. Takes nice photos above water too. A longer zoom would be nice.

Camera is very easy to use and you can also do all settings under the water. Default underwater settings are perfect for snorkeling and diving up to 5 m.
Camera dropped down few times and still working perfectly.
I missed regular mini USB plug to connect it to PC.
Battery works fine and it can charged in less than two hours.
It's a perfect kid's photo camera.

Could be a little faster to start up. Heavier than other compact cameras. Very poor zoom. Color balance when using flash could also be better. Still: All the pros more than make up for thse weaknesses. The casing can really take a beating. Underwater shots are fun. And the fact that you never have to worry about dirt or water is priceless.

We purchased this camera to take underwater photos in Grandma's pool with the cousins...the pictures came out great and everyone had fun! Now that it's cooling down, the camera has been wonderful to have along on bike rides and day hikes.
The camera is durable and feels like it has substance. This makes it easier for me to hand it over to my boys (13,11&8) so they can participate in documenting our adventures.
My main camera is the Canon Rebel XTi, but when we are roughing it, the Stylus Tough 8000 is great. I get the pictures I want without worring about possible damage to my SLR.
We...the whole family...highly recommend this camera. In fact, we are considering purchasing another one to share among us :)

Comments about Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 Digital Camera (Silver):
I have very active boys. We are on the go alot. I keep the camera handy for pictures everywhere. It is small enough to fit into my pocket or have it my bag. It is very tough, and can handle the knocking around, including being in the water. It is easy enough that my 4 year old can use it. The battery does not last as long as I need. It is not unusual for me to take 50 or more pictures at a single event And the power button is on top next to the picture button, which I consider a design flaw. I have more than once turned off the camera rather than getting the perfect shot. There is a bit of a lag time, as with all digital cameras. Nothing like some of the cameras I have used. Overall, if you can keep your finger on the right button and don't get carried away with mini video clips depleting the battery, the camera will last through every event. Well worth it. My husband and I each have one.

Overall a fine camera. Easy to use. Have not tested its water resistance yet. Heading to the Caribbean in January. Looking forward to testing its underwater ability. So far picture quality is good but not great. Seems to be lacking in color depth. Only real complaint is that the battery can be inserted wrong. We marked the battery and camera case with white out so we know quickly which direction to put in the battery.

I bought this because it is waterproof. I have used it in the rain, under water and in my everyday life. It fits nicely in my purse, easy to use, takes great photos, ok video and it's second-best feature is that it is durable. I have recommended it to by brother-in-law who uses it for work (landscape designer). He needs all the durability and heat/cold/moisture resistant features it offers. I love that it has "dummy" buttons for specific scenarios - underwater, snow, lowlight, self-portrait, etc.

Comments about Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 Digital Camera (Silver):
I use it because its so small and easy to carry in my pocket for ecological activities (trekking, rafting, climbing, snorkeling and others). This camera is great for shots that you couldn't take with a regular camera without an underwater housing; it's easy to use. Picture is amazing. Indoor photos are just not of the same quality as outdoors photos. If you spend your time out, on the trail, crossing streams, backpacking, camping or anywhere that could be rough on delicate equipment it's a worthwhile investiment.
