The 2TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive from LaCie is a high-capacity external RAID solution. The drive features dual swappable disks, each with 7200rpm speed and a 16MB data buffer. It can be connected to a computer via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400, or USB 2.0.
The array can be configured in several configurations, including RAID 0 for maximum performance, RAID 1 for data mirroring, or concatenation mode for maximum storage capacity. The eSATA connection delivers burst data transfer rates of up to 165MB/sec, while FireWire-800 speeds along at 90MB/sec, FireWire-400 at 40MB/sec, and USB 2.0 at 35MB/sec. These features and more make the array a great solution for your large data storage needs.

The LaCie 2big 2TB external HDD works exactly as you would expect. Plug it into the electrical outlet, connect the data cable (USB & FW cables come included - not sure about eSata) and presto, you're ready to rock and roll. The drive instantly appears in the finder (mac) or Explorer (windows). No need for drivers or fancy software. Though it comes with USB 2.0, FW 400/800 and eSata interfaces, I used it with FW-800 on my Mac. Data transfer speeds were exactly what I expected for FW-800. Faster actually when transferring large files (over lots of small files). The rocker switch on the back of the unit allows for "On-Auto-Off" settings which control weather the unit is always powered on, turned off, or automatically powers up when it's 'called for' by the Operating System (this is 'econo-mode').All in all this is a very worthy investment. Bear in mind that while the LaCie 2big itself barely makes a sound, the fan continuously operates while the drive is powered up so it may be worthwhile to invest in a slightly longer cable so as to place the unit at some distance. Other then that my only issue is that when setting the drive to 'Auto' the Operating System will lag while waiting for the LaCie's built-in hard drives to reach operating speeds.I highly recommend this drive for both it's reliability and performance. Finally, I strongly recommend purchasing this item from B&H Photo.[...]

I shoot HD video on data cards. The cards are erased after each shoot, so I desire a "fail-safe" solution for storing my footage after it's been shot. I use this dual-drive product in the RAID 1 mode, i.e. the "safe" configuration where data is written simultaneously to both drives. Even though this slows down overall performance, it gives me peace of mind. I've only had the drive for a couple of weeks. What I don't like about it is that it spins down if it's not being used. This is somewhat disconcerting at first, but I'm getting used to it.

Used for redundent backup of photo files. Safe and surprisingly large (about 2.5 times the size of my last quadra 1 TB purchase).

I had the 1T 2 big but was too small to generate a monthly backup - so this is an upgrade. Love it

Comments about LaCie 2TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive:
This product didn't work since the day I bought it, 4 months ago.
First it didn't mount and then I could not format it using Mac utilities.
The first person I talked at Lacie support mentioned some problems with Mac OS systems. Why they don't write it on the box?
I mailed the unit to Lacie. They supposedly fixed it. After spending time and (more) money on it it still needed to be formatted which I could do only using again Lacie support going through different ways to restart the computer, etc. It seemed to work. Few days later I tried to drag a very simple file to it and the computer was now frozen. After all this time dealing with it I can not return it. About $ 300.00 later I have something that would not serve to hold my door because it is too big.

Thrilled with this system. I use it in SAFE mode & mirror the hard drives for backup photos. I've been using Lacie hard drives for years, and feel like they are the most reliable on the market.

Everyone should know enough to back up data regularly. I have a MAC and find the LaCie to be the best brand to use. The unit has multiple connectors which make fast data exchange possible. Video files can be large depending on format. Don't Skimp to save a few bucks.

This is really a high quality product. It's really important to feel that your HD footage is being well guarded when you are working on a film. I've been doing a lot of work using this hard disc, and so far, it's been perfect.

This drive is to replace another LaCie that had bit the dust (it was old... It was time). It's a nice setup. Something it does, I didn't realize, it will put itself to sleep after extended period of not accessing the drive. Let's say your working on the Mac, and your not working from the drive it will go into standby. I thought that was a nice touch. First drive I've seen do that.
I will be getting another.

Film producer and editor, I require top notch high quality drives and this one works great. I needed RAID 1 protection and LaCie gives you the space and the protection. Great for just backing up or HD backup editing. Amazing space and back up for the price.

Comments about LaCie 2TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive:
I have been looking for a reasonably priced external HDD that had firewire 800, removable discs, was RAID compatable, and was well made. That's exactly what Lacie has made here.
I use this as a remote drive for storing photographs and video files. I have it set up as RAID 1 so the 2nd disc is a copy of the first. The unit responds quickly, performs beautifully, and it looks great too.

Comments about LaCie 2TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive:
-Very easy to use, plug in and go.
-Having many different connection options was important to us -we needed USB support on off site backup jobs. Then we switched to eSata when connecting to a workstation and speed seemed pretty good. Did not do speed test.
-Auto on/off switch handy so can put the storage in inaccessible place and it will shut down automatically with the computer.
-A bit noisy when on your desktop and the fan really gets going
-Small and very compact design for having easy access slide out trays for the drives. No need to take unit apart to swap drives.
-Would have preferred raid-0 and raid-1 labelling instead of the "easier" terminology they use
-Several months of use and there have been no drive issues despite being used in a non-office, construction oriented environment.
-Price very reasonable.
-Did not use the software.

Comments about LaCie 2TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive:
I did a lot of research before purchasing the 2big but still didn't quite understand the flexibility of the 4 RAID modes offered by this box. Ultimately, it's an ideal solution for my needs as a filmmaker because of the Mixed RAID 0 and RAID 1 mode, which allows me to operate with high speed on one partition and high security on the other. This LaCie does have a fan by the way, but it's not at all loud (which seemed to be a problem with earlier revs of this product). Hopefully this holds up through long-term use, but as of now I'm extremely pleased and have no complaints beyond the usual hard-to-decode technical manual. (Why is it that no company has figured out that what people really want out of a manual is a handful of likely uses and attendant setups? Constantly mystifies me...)

Comments about LaCie 2TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive:
Recently had a hard drive failure, luckily I had an external hard drive everything was saved to but I was quickly running low on space. This hard drive solved this problem. This drive was primarily purchased because of its Raid 1 option. Easy to set up, has worked great on my home network, have had no problems using it through my router.
I like the fact that I can expand to a larger hard drive with little ease.

Comments about LaCie 2TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive:
We bought three of these to use on different projects and as backups drives. All three were set up as 'SAFE' so there was redundancy on all the data. On the third drive, it would not mount or format on Mac OSX. I was able to plug it into a Windows XP machine and format as NTFS. Since our primary use is on a Mac, I RMA'd it and sent it back. Hopefully it was a fluke and the replacement works as well as the first two. I love the flexibility of this drive. So many RAID options and connection types. This certainly isn't a 'portable drive' as it is heavy and not bus powered....don't plan on throwing it in your backpack to move projects between work and home very often! I love that the drives are removable (although I haven't pulled them out yet). Theoretically if you get the 500GB version and want to later upgrade to 1TB or even 2TB, you can remove the drives and put in new ones....nice!
