The 3TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive from LaCie is a high-capacity external RAID solution. The drive features dual swappable disks, each with 7200rpm speed and a 16MB data buffer. It can be connected to a computer via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400, or USB 2.0.
The array can be configured in several configurations, including RAID 0 for maximum performance, RAID 1 for data mirroring, or concatenation mode for maximum storage capacity. The eSATA connection delivers burst data transfer rates of up to 165MB/sec, while FireWire-800 speeds along at 90MB/sec, FireWire-400 at 40MB/sec, and USB 2.0 at 35MB/sec. Comments about LaCie 3TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive:
I have had no problems/issues running this drive with my imac. Sets up in minutes. Pretty much plug and play. RAID 1 a little more effort, but painless. It sleeps automatically, without fuss. It awakens in the same fashion. All drives make noise. If it really bugs you then you can turn up your itunes, or park the thing farther away. I don't see (hear) it as an issue with this drive. I debated between the LaCie version & the Drobo. I didn't like all the "artificial intelligence" of the Drobo. The LaCie will require more management, but I have full confidence in the unit. The included software pretty useless considering how easily Mac makes file management, etc. I plan on adding the 4TB version of this unit.

We will use this to archive our most important projects. The quad design is very flexible for transferring data between computers. Having instant access to RAID formatting is very nice.

Comments about LaCie 3TB 2big Quadra External Hard Drive:
I bought a couple of these drives to complement a dual Final Cut Pro system being used on projects demanding boatloads of memory and jackrabbit speed. They deliver the goods on both counts, as well as exhibiting granite-like reliability. I'd recommend them without hesitation even if you're not looking for a gigantic amount of elbow room.
