I have used this external drive via Firewire with my MacBook Pro for about a month, and so far it is working well. I am mainly using the drive to digitally archive my CD collection and have also made a couple mix CDs. The slot loading drive on my MacBook Pro scratches my discs. I did not observe any damage to my discs from the Lacie. Since it is a tray loading unit, I can also play 3" discs which is not possible on the MacBook Pro.
The burn speed is very fast.
After upgrading the software, the LightScribe application worked (on OS 10.6.8) and the effects are very nice. However, the artwork seems to fade (small dots appear) after a week. I'm not sure if that is because of the drive or the discs I am using (Verbatim CD-R).
The casing is very nice: it is aesthetically pleasing and seems to be rather rugged. The finishing also seems like it will hide fingerprints and scratches. I had the IOmega external super DVD Writer 24X for a while, but exchanged it for this Lacie. I am happy I did because this is a better looking drive, seems more hardy and has LightScribe capability.
Note to Mac users: Once you insert a CD / DVD, you cannot eject the disc by pressing the eject button. The button only works when the drive is empty or to close the tray after it is opened. To eject once a disc is inserted, you have to drag the disc to Trash or press the eject button in the software you are using to read the disk.
If this drive were not made in China, I would give 5 stars instead of 4.

[...]I bought this DVD burner because my video drive on my Powerbook broke down rather than spend much more to repair the drive. It seems to work fine and the DVD's work on my computer BUT they don't work on anyone else's. This is a problem for me and I'm trying to resolve this with LaCie and Apple.

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
I brought this drive because like many iMac owners, the internal drive stopped working. I could not be happier with the results! The included Toast software enabled me to easily burn DVDs of data to free-up space on my hard-drives. I have not had a failed burn yet. I am glad I did not spend the $200-$300 on a new internal drive. Running MAC OSX 10.6.8

Well built, good software included (especiallyToast), and adapter cables to use it on Firewire 400, Firewire 800, and USB 2.0 busses. Second one of the exact same burner, really happy with it.

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
My wife made an HD movie of her brother's wedding for family that couldn't attend, but none of the DVD burners we tried could reliably transfer the movie to disc for normal DVD-player or even computer use.
Nothing else, including crazy blu-ray and dedicated dvd cloners was able to transfer this ISO onto a disc.
Until we bought the D2.
Super fast, completely reliable, cool and quiet, it made over 30 copies of the same disc in a couple hours with NO coasters. plug & play using the built-in macOS or windows7 disc burning utilities.
The included software is pitiful at best. prepare to install it, and then not be able to do much without purchasing a full-paid-version. to be honest, it didn't make a difference, but it was annoying to get lock-ware. just leave it out and make a recommendation!

Due to the piece of junk that is commonly known as the SuperDrive, we purchased one of these for our production bay. It has worked so well we bought a second one for our our second station.

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
I use a Macbook Pro as my primary computer and part of my work involves burning files onto many DVDs; as such I needed a faster, dedicated external burner for my day to day business. After testing out many external burners I found that this drive provides the fastest, error-free performance. Over the past few months of owning this drive I have burned hundreds of DVD-Rs and CD-Rs and have yet to have a single burn error. The drive is encased in a durable aluminum enclosure making the drive feel rugged yet lightweight at the same time. The drive is powered by an AC adapter, which means zero power drop-outs that happen regularly with the smaller USB bus-powered drives that have saturated the external burner market. You can connect the drive to your computer via USB 2.0, Firewire 400, or Firewire 800, which is a plus for port management or compatibility issues. You do not need to install drivers unless you wish to use the drive's Lightscribe capability, which, by the way, can produce absolutely gorgeous, high-resolution labels on Lightscribe discs.
Although this drive may cost more than other, smaller alternatives, what you get is incredible performance, and reliability that USB-bus powered drives just cannot provide. If you need a dedicated burner, definitely go with this one.

My Mac Book Pro DVD drive died, so I needed a replacement fast! I didn't want to shop around too much so I trusted the reviews on B&H, and I'm very thankful for the outcome! This DVD burner is easy to use, fast, and has great quality!

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
I recently bought this DVD burner because the SuperDrive on my IMac has failed. After doing some research, I decided to go with this burner because all the reviews I read indicated that it is a good replacement for a SuperDrive. After using it a couple of times, I agree with the reviews- it works perfectly with my IMac and is a great alternative for a failed drive. I only wish I had bought one sooner as a backup, because I could have extended the life of my overworked SuperDrive. If you need a backup, this product is the way to go.

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
Hooked it up to the firewire port on Imac, was not recognized on desktop, scratched my head and inserted a cd, it read it no problem. Figured if it can read it, then it can write to it. I've been burning dvds quickly and have nothing but praise for this fine product. Apple on the other hand always has some quirky thing going on that does not make sense. Why not show the drive on desktop? Answer: they want you to buy all their stuff!

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
I purchased this LaCie Burner mostly to load my CD collection into iTunes. The SuperDrive in my iMac is slow and was not able to copy some tunes in an acceptable quality. Also, the SuperDrive can not handle discs that have paper labels on them.
The LaCie Burner is fast. Tunes are recorded or copied in excellent quality and this burner will accept discs with labels on them.
I have not yet tried the LightScribe feature.

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
When my superdrive on my iMac finally gave it up just after the warranty period, I decided to look into an upgrade. This burner is much faster than the super drive and the light scribe labels are a plus. I'm not expecting beautiful labels so the very simple graphic software that comes with it for the Mac is not enough to be disappointed in this drive. Hook up a snap, and it is performing exactly as advertised. Seems like a good value.

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
The main reason I got this was because I was sick of waiting for large discs to burn. Discs burn way faster than in my iMac. They also seem to be more reliable.
However I haven't gotten the light scribe to really work yet, it seems really complicated. Every disc I've tried burning a picture on just ends up grey.

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
It's a great drive but installation on an iMac with a defective internal DVD R/W drive didn't work in the beginning. After many go-rounds with LaCie and downloading a driver (which wasn't needed when I tried to install it on a PowerBook Pro at LaCie's suggestion) it finally worked on the iMac. Why I don't know. LaCie's support was good but required a lot of persistence on my part. Happily all is resolved now.

Comments about LaCie d2 DVD±RW 22x with LightScribe External DVD Burner:
While transferring my 400+ CD collection to iTunes and then to my new iPod Touch, the optical drive in my 2008 MacBook Pro gave up. This seems to be a recurrent problem here. Beleive it or not, the Genius at the Apple store recommended this unit over a replacement Apple drive, and I would save half the money in the process. He was so right. Connected to FireWire 400, this unit fed CDs to my Mac at well over 30X,more than twice as fast as the internal drive. Installation was a breeze and I was loading CDs within minutes of opening the box.[...]
