The JVC DR-MV150B is a feature-rich combination DVD and VHS upconverting player-recorder. Imagine taking your current library of VHS tapes and burning them to DVD. Then playing them upconverted to 720p or 1080p (depending on the resolution of your HDTV). They won't become high definition but they will look the best you've ever seen them.

With its built-in ATSC/QAM high definition tuner you won't need a separate set top box if you have an analog set. But the DR-MV150B really shines when connected to an HDTV. It can receive OTA (over the air) free high definition programming and channels 1-135 of cable transmissions.

It can play VHS Hi-Fi, DVD-Video, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, +RW, +R, +R (Dual), CD, SVCD/VCD, CD-R/RW, WMA/MP3/JPEG Digital Still/DivX(R) (CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, +R/+RW) and it can record on VHS Hi-Fi, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, +RW, +R. JVC calls this remarkable device the DR-MV150B. You'll call it versatile, powerful and easy to use.

I use this machine for time-shifting TV programs and for transferring old VHS tapes to DVD.

The unit is similar in many respects to one I had purchased 4 years ago for $200.00 more (nearly twice the price) made by LG.

Why not five stars? Because, if I try to record from a premium movie channel (HBO, Showtime, etc.),a message appears telling me the feed is copy-protected. That message appears neither on my older DVD recorder nor my VHS machines. Recording from premium channels is not possible, apparently, with this unit. Bummer!

The DVD/VCR has a long list of stations that are listed in a weird way. To find Channel 7, for instance, you have to go through a long list of channels to find it. Then they're listed as 7-1 or 7-102 for instance. It's very time consuming to find the right channel listed for your area.

Comments about JVC DR-MV150B DVD/VCR Combo Recorder:

Easy to set up. Does a good recording job. Love the built-in tuner.
Not real happy with the on-screen display as it is not very adjustable (can't just get the tape length) plus the display will only stay on for a certain ammount of time.

Serves my from broadcast purposes as advertised.
Although recording scedules remain, the clock must be reset manually after a power loss instead of updating from broadcast clock signals as was acccustomed to.
There is also a function in a TV section on the remote that has absolutely no info of how to use.

I mostly use it to Record my favorite shows on the vhs side. I would probably use the dvd to record shows that I want to keep. I mostly use the dvd side to watch movies. what is great about it is the brand (jvc) I have always liked the brand. I have purchased many vcrs in the past by Jvc. The only thing that I wished it did was it having a universal remote to control my TV.

Comments about JVC DR-MV150B DVD/VCR Combo Recorder:

I have old vhs tapes that are getting old and I don't want to lose the contents. I've used a Panasonic before but that was not as good as this recorder. What I really appreciate is the super simple instructions that come with the JVC. It really is very very simple to use. One little quibble is the instructions for creating a label. The instructions should have appeared before the instructions for finalizing the disc. Like I said really small and now that I know what to do there is no problem. I can also record from the tv using either the vhs or the dvd. Some machines don't let you record using the vhs any more. I'm not a heavy use video person, so I can't honestly review the other features but for saving old vhs tapes I highly recommend this product.

The DVD/VCR has a long list of stations that are listed in a weird way. To find Channel 7, for instance, you have to go through a long list of channels to find it. Then they're listed as 7-1 or 7-102 for instance. It's very time consuming to find the right channel listed for your area.

It does what it's supposed to do--"dubs" from VHS tapes to DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, no muss, no fuss. Costs more than one might think is necessary, but there really aren't that many competitors out there, so this is what it costs to save those old tapes. The indexing/labelling functions aren't as simple as I'd like, but generally, I'm just copying a whole program from a tape to a disc, and breaking it into peices isn't critical.

I am very, very pleased so far with this recorder. The directions are much easier to follow than another recorder I have used. I had no difficulty gettiing it connected (and I'm not usually good at such things). Haven't yet transferred from VCR to DVD, but if how I have used it so far is any indication, that should also not be difficult to do.

I bought the JVC DVD/VCR combo to replace another JVC VCR which was used mainly to record TV programs by my wife. I chose JVC because I've had good experience with other JVC products & the combo unit has performed well as expected. Set-up is relatively easy by following the quick set-up guide. However, I do find some of the function buttons on the remote difficult to read.

I use the DVR to record mostly sports, but occasionally I will record a movie. Unfortunately the "record once" feature is a pain in the neck, where without a certain DVD disc and setting it to the "VR: mode, it won't record some HBO movies for later viewing.

I don't like the idea of paying a cable company for a DVR. I like the DVD-RAM capability of this machine. I was a little surprised that I had to use an HDMI cable or RCA plug cables to get the video to the TV - no RF converter to put the signal on Channel 3 or 4. Put getting around it is not an issue.

I have years worth of VHF tapes that I been wanting to convert. I finally bought this unit and it works great. I also want to transfer old 8M and 8MM digital tapes using the DV IN and RCA inputs on the front of the unit. I haven't tried that yet, but it looks like a nice feature. I would definitely recommend this unit.

Manual leaves a lot to be desired or else I would have rated this a 5 star. Setup was a little tricky, but once done, machine performed excellently. Use manual setup instead of quick startup.
