I bought this to copy home VHS videos to DVD. It serves its purpose well for me. The manual is easy to understand and with more practice I'll be dubbing with a more professional look. This also works well for viewing, so I feel I've made a great find.

Comments about JVC DR-MV80B DVD Recorder/VCR Combo (Black):
I purchased this recorder to transfer archived VHS tapes to DVD. The resulting DVD's have excellent quality given the source material and are as good as those I've made using a time base corrector.
As an added bonus, it's very simple to operate; insert a blank DVD, insert the tape, play to the point you want to start transfer, pause the tape and hit DUB. Different compression rates yield 2, 4, or 6 hour DVD options.
I highly recommend the DR-MV80B.

Comments about JVC DR-MV80B DVD Recorder/VCR Combo (Black):
Had a hard time finding a deck that used one hdmi for both vhs and dvd, until I found this one. I have tapes that I need to transfer and a few old movies that need to be seen one more time. My only complaint is that it goes back to the lowest resolution after I power it off. The solution is probably in the manual, but this thing was so easy to setup that I haven't cracked it open yet.
Excellent product.

I bought this to be able to transfer old VHS tapes to DVDs. In particular, I wanted to record old home movies that were on VHS tapes so I could send them to my daughter who has been wanting to see movies of her as a child ever since she became a mother herself. So far, it has worked just fine. The movies on the DVD copies are just as good, if not better, than on the original VHS tapes. I have not tried recording anything from TV yet.

Comments about JVC DR-MV80B DVD Recorder/VCR Combo (Black):
[...]The first thing I noticed about the DR-MV80B when I took it out of the box is that it doesn't have a video coax cable connector that is standard from most cable companies. At first I thought I messed up. So, I hooked up the unit to my TV exactly as it said in the quick start guide, with standard stereo audio and video cables and I set the TV to aux as instructed, but I got no cable picture although I was able to play DVDs and VCR tapes. Incidentally, you'll need to buy an extra set of these cables because the one that comes with the unit is only enough to connect the cable box to the unit but you need another one to connect the unit to the TV. I then tried the component and s-video outputs with no success. After about 2 hours, I gave up and I called the JVC help number and got a great tech rep named Javier who recommended that while hooked up exactly as in the quick start guide to try pushing the blue Aux button on the remote a couple of times. I did that and I was immediately able to see the cable channels come through.Immediately I noticed that that the picture coming out of this combo unit is richer than a straight coax connection to my TV which is NOT HD and which I use so that I don't need to have the vcr unit powered on all the time. Blacks come out much blacker whereas they're more washed out on the straight coax connection. However, after an hour I began to perceive that there was an annoyingly audible hum with the unit and that there was some slight banding on the picture. So I called the help number again but it was too late and they had closed by that time.Coincidentally, at the same time I bought an ION URECORD device which converts your LPs to MP3s and started reading the manual. In the troubleshooting section of the URECORD it mentioned that "GROUND" hum can sometimes occur and it gave a way to handle that. Then, I figured it might also apply to the DR-MV80B. So I took the powerplug out of the socket and stuck a 3 to 2 converter on it to eliminate the ground wire. Like magic, both the annoying audio hum and the video banding disappeared.I tested a RAM disk for video capture and the result is stunningly crisp. My wife doesn't trust disks so she'll stick to tape to record her soap opera. That's all I have for 1 day. I'll get back after I had it for a while.I'm giving it a 5 even though setup is not exactly intuitive because the Tech help was available, quick, and knowledgeable even on a Sunday.

The VCR/DVD recorder is easy to set up and use. The menu options are well presented and quite intuitive. The rewind is the fastest I've experienced in a VCR. The dubbing function is nothing short of fabulous.
