M-Audio Axiom Pro 61 - Advanced 61 Key USB MIDI Controller
The Axiom Pro 61 from M-Audio is an extremely powerful USB MIDI controller that features 61 semi-weighted keys, a useful set of trigger pads & controls, and custom software called "HyperControl" that runs within the device itself that automatically maps its hardware controls to Pro Tools and other popular DAW programs. The idea behind the Axiom Pro is to get the user away from their computer keyboard and mouse, and to keep their focus on the creative act of making music. The HyperControl software plays a huge part in allowing the user to constantly follow their inspiration-- rather than constantly click through menus with a mouse. HyperControl seamlessly syncs the Axiom Pro's knobs, pads, display, and controls with DAW software and plug-ins running on your computer. You use buttons on the Axiom Pro to navigate to different virtual instruments and screens in your audio software. The graphic LCD display on the Axiom Pro will follow along as you work with your DAW, updating any necessary information about the current task being carrying out.

The Axiom Pro 61 works flawlessly with Reason. It is definitely worth the extra money to buy the Pro version of this keyboard. The only con I would have to say is definitely the touch pads. They are pretty sensitive but are very hard at the same time. They don't have any give at all. Feel really weird. They are just extra's though. I really don't think anyone is buying this for the touch pad.

I use this live and in my recording setup. It is great to take Mainstage settings to the stage with the sounds that I use in recordings. The control surface for my apps works flawlessly. I am still trying to get Abelton Lite to run without crashing, however. Also, I wished they had a 76 note version.

I always like my reviews to rip the brand/company that produced the item a new one. However, that was rather hard to do so in this case. The M-Audio Axiom Pro 61 is actually everything I thought it would be. The keys have a natural weighted feel, unlike my prior Oxygen 8. Transport controls are functional in all the DAWs I used them in (Pro Tools, Reason, even FL Studio). Set up is as simple as connecting a USB cable - although in Reason, I did have to configure the midi settings for literally a minute or two to have transport and keyboard work together. The parameters for the knobs and faders are all near perfect - some very small 'learn from control surface' edits, and you're good to go. The LCD screen in the top right of the keyboard is also very helpful at times. The drum pads are, well hmm, they are what they are. Either the keyboard is still so new - or they're not quite as response as say an MPC or such - but I don't see myself using them all too often. Again, I can't seem to find anything bad to really say about this keyboard. I'm thoroughly satisfied with it!

Hypercontrol works as advertised. I loaded the drivers for Logic Pro, connected up - and the Axion Pro was fully in control of Logic. Setting up a Mainstage concert with control from the Axiom Pro was quite easy as well. If you're looking to step up to a midi controller that doesn't just have control surfaces - but has software (Hypercontrol) to make it all 'just work' -- then this is something to look at.

Excellent quality and feel. Well laid out intelligent design. The keys feel great and are responsive. Cons: Learning to use it is a bit of a task but it is a complicated machine which I believe once mastered will take the place of everything. Can't say enough!

I currently use Apple's garageband to make music. I wanted to get an axiom to control alot of garageband's features. Unfortunaly garageband doesn't have many advanced features and I can only use the keys, pitch and modulation wheels, drumpad, 1 slider, 1 knob, and the transport controls on the axiom for garageband. This isn't m-audios fault garageband just not good. Other than that I have loved it ever since. The keys feel great although not entirely weighted, and it is very easy and fun to play.

This is an outstanding controller that maps itself to your DAW. I am running Snow Leopard and using ProTools 8 and Reason 4. The Axiom Pro maps to ProTools (with Update Digi's 8.0cs1) out of the box. All I had to do was tell protools it was there. Most actions that I normally would use my ASCII keyboard for I can now do with the onboard controls of the Axiom. After loading the Reason file supplied by M-Audio I had the same great experience. Every instrument I loaded was immediately mapped and ready to go. After a short acclimation period the controller becomes the instrument and the need for a mouse and keyboard practically goes away. This unit replaced three devices (keyboard, control surface and pad controller) freeing up desk space and USB ports. An excellent addition to any home studio for recording and mixing.
