The HonlPhoto 1/8" Speed Grid is part of the Honl Speed System, which allows you to add a line of different light modifiers to your flash unit. The 1/8" Speed Grid attaches to the Speed Strap (offered separately), and dramatically narrows the beam of light that's put out by your shoe mount or handle mount flash. The effect is a small circle of light, with the size depending on flash-to-subject distance.
Two versions are available, one with 1/4" grids and one with 1/8" grids. The 1/8" version produces a spot a few degrees narrower then the 1/4" version.

This is the only honeycomb grid for small flashes as far as I know. It is made to fit all hotshoe flashes and as such comes up a bit big on my Canon 580exII. Better too big than too small. It works great but I wish a) It attached better and b) It was a better fit for the Canon 580exII but i'm just being picky now.
FYI; It attaches via two velcro strips, one on each side which attaches to the Honl speed strap or other velcro (not supplied) on the flash head. I think it should have more points of contact for attachment but it seems to stay on when used so hasn't been a problem thus far.

its a huge piece of gear!
that's huge! it fits properly on a SB-900. You could have some issue with other flashes even if you use the official strap from Honl.

Comments about Honl Photo 1/8" Speed Grid for Speed System:
Anyone who knows about lighting knows you must have an idea of what you want before buying products. Grids work best when you want the light to fall off towards the edges of the spread where a snoot has harder edges. This 1/8 is absolutely perfect in every aspect of the type of work I do. Love it. Product comes with its own microfiber carrying cloth which keeps it looking nice and dust free.

This product would work perfectly if you could get it to stay on the flash. I have an sb700 and sb800. I can't get the velcro to stay around the flash head. Bad design

Comments about Honl Photo 1/8" Speed Grid for Speed System:
I don't always have a need for a grid spot in the field but when i do this one works great. I need to set-up and break down quickly and the Honl System is perfect for a working photojournalist. I use a ThinkTank Retrospective 30 as my light kit and the 1/8 speed grid slides into one of the pockets perfectly. I works as advertised. Basically the Honl system allows me to concentrate on composing a nice shot instead of fighting with my gear.

This product is very well built. Another advantage is that it can fit almost any speedlight existing. The beam of light is of nice quality and you don't loose too much light. Perfect for the speedlighter

Comments about Honl Photo 1/8" Speed Grid for Speed System:
While the idea of a grid for a shoe-mount flash is a good one, the design of these "speed grids" leaves a lot of room for further refinment. First, the so-called attachment system using Velcro straps is amatuer-ish and does not hold the grid to the flash head face securely. Apparently, Honl tried a one size-fits-all-flashes approach, but it's a failure in my opinion. Attaching the grid with Velcro to a Velcro band - which is an additional $10 option - that wraps around the flash head leaves the grid loose and sloppy. For the price of these grids, which isn't cheap, they should precisely fit your Canon or Nikon flash without resorting to using Velcro. They are not speedy to attach to a flash and a not worth the cost. I regret buying these expensive pieces of junk.

This is a nice accessory just to have around. It'll do what it's supposed to do. Doesn't offer that much in the way of construction, but is way better than most self-made devices with straws. Save yourself the money on speed strap unless you need it for another accessory....can just stick velcro on your flashes to attach the grid.

Well constructed and produces a tight beam. I was on the fence about this for a while (considering the price), but I am glad I pulled the trigger.

It's build very well. Sure you could use straws or cardboard to create a DIY version, but Honl brings it up to a professional level. Works very well when you play with the zoom on your speedlight. A must for strobist just starting out. FYI, you can also buy industrial standard velcro to attach to the speedlight at any department store.

Comments about Honl Photo 1/8" Speed Grid for Speed System:
This is a great grid. Easy to use, lightweight, and large enough to fit on many models of speedlight. Be sure to buy a velcro strap to wrap around the flash head, otherwise you won't have anything to secure the grid to.
Great value, great product.

Excellent results from initial use thus far. Very pleased with the performance, quality and construction. I'm not sure why others think this is flimsy - seems quite sturdy to me.

Comments about Honl Photo 1/8" Speed Grid for Speed System:
If you need to throw some light in a specific area, this will do the trick. The light is not as hard as the 8" reflector in a snoot formation. It's nice to have a step down from that in the bag. Though it is much bigger than it looks in the photo, it is worth making space in the bag to carry it. It pops on with very little effort at all. Be careful not to smash the grid with a heavy lens in your bag. I just throw it in the front pocket to avoid any problems.

Fits 430exii, 580exii, and Vivitar 285HV (with the zoom hood on).
Rugged frame construction protects the less-rugged matrix of straws that modify the light. It's a little on the bulky side.
Creates tight spotlight with consistent results among the abovementioned flashes.

This is one of the easiest to use light modifiers I've found for speed lights. I have both this and the 1/4" grid with speed straps and they are quick to set up and quick to use and give me exactly the focus I'm looking for.

I use two of these on Nikon SB-800s to create a nice rounded spotlight look on subjects. The light shape is a bit larger than it would be from a snoot, but the edges and quality of light are softer.
