Camera is overall a good buy. I use it to take photos of equipment around my work. This includes the whole range of bright light outdoors to the inside of an almost pitch black vessel, macro to max zoom.
I like the way Panasonic has incorporated a touch screen with the manual controls. Using the touch screen can complicate things at times, but the ability to touch on the screen where you want the camera to focus without adjusting the exposure is invaluable.
The camera likes to boost the ISO mid way through its range, but that degrades the clarity of the pictures a bit. I prefer to use it in P Mode and the ISO down.
The camera has performed well in low light conditions, with minimal blurriness due to camera shake.
There is no backlight setting on this camera. They claim to have an I.Exposure setting that can compensate for backlight, but I have not figured out how to make it work.
Panasonic has jumped into the "i" craze and come up with special names for some settings. It is more confusing than cute.
Overall packed with a lot of useful "extras" that make the camera a good buy.

In all honesty I haven't used this camera that much as I bought it for my wife. But whether it's because I have Canon controls engrained in the camera operations part of brain or it is the case, but the controls seems overly complicated and fiddly especially with the touch screen. Also in dark environments when you let the camera decide the ISO it invariably chooses the max (1600) which turns out ridiculously grainy (and that horrible digital grain). Aside from this gripe the picture quality tends to be good.
Manual controls are interesting with the touch screen, I can't decide if I like it or not. Guess it'll be down to personal preference.
Again not having much experience with other compacts it's difficult to compare like for like.
The camera looks great though and it has a pretty good video mode with image stabilisation.

I'm in love with this camera. Very good and easy to use. Not the lightest one I've seen, but very practical, specially for someone who is not a professional, like me.

If you want manual control of shutter speed, flash and apeture settings, you can't beat this camera for the price. With a Leica lens built in, decent resolution, good start up times and nice sub-compact form factor, this is great.
I bought this for my daughter who is just getting into photography. She wanted an SLR but also wanted something small she could carry around in her pocket when she is out with friends. This camera is the best of both.
Touch screen controls make it easy to change the manual settings - much better than the Sont and Canon equivalents.

This is the camera that easily fits in my pants pocket, so it's always with me. Even when using my "serious" SLR, I'll take out the Lumix to size up the scene, test out vantage points, or just to help my creative thinking.

Great manual features, and auto also if you need it. Captures good photos in relatively dim lit areas.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera as a travel camera. It's small size is easy to keep in your pocket without being cumbersome. I wanted a Panasonic camera with a Leica wide-angle lens, 12+ megapixels, manual controls, but also an impressive auto function so anyone could use it, all within roughly a $200 budget. This camera had all that.
Overall the camera performs very well. Even straight out of the box the camera shoots very good photos. The color, sharpness, low-noise, and contrast are all very good for a compact camera in this price range. The touch screen works well.
The only thing I would change about the camera is the battery pack. For me it would be much more convenient if it used AA batteries. It comes with a battery/charger combo. And the charger is almost half the size of the camera, so it's an extra piece you have to carry with you. And it takes 2 hours to charge a battery. It would even be better if they supplied a cable to plug into the camera instead of having to use the charger.
I don't use the video function of the camera, so I can't really comment on that.
Overall, great camera for the money. Highly recommended.

I specifically got this camera based on reviews that I read regarding it's response time (shutter speed). I wanted to capture natural moments of my daughter who is 1.5. So far so good. Much better than Sony and Nikon that I previously had.

This camera is great. I bought it because I wanted to have a good quality camera to take out with me everywhere I went, even out with friends to nightlife spots. I have a Canon S3IS which is way too bulky to take out, so this was a great alternative! It exceeds my expectations. The touch screen is awesome and so high tech and the picture quality is fantastic! There's so many scene options, light settings, and manual override which is great for any true photographer. This is a bundle of joy :)
