The Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera from Panasonic is an ultracompact point and shoot camera, which easily fits into a shirt pocket or purse. The slim camera features an impressive Leica wide-angle zoom lens, perfect for capturing group shots when zoomed out or individual portraiture when zoomed all the way in.

Featuring an impressive waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof design, this pocket shooter can be used in less-than-ideal environments, or for a day on a sandy beach. You can even take it with you in the water, as it is rated to depths of up to 9.84' (3 m). Clumsy users will appreciate its durability: the camera has passed drop tests from heights of 4.92' (1.5 m).

The innovative Intelligent Auto (iA) helps you to take clearer, sharper photographs. This mode includes a Face Recognition function, which can "remember" registered faces. The camera will help to optimize focus and exposure so that the owners of these registered faces will be bright and in focus in photos.

Shaky hands in less-than-ideal lighting conditions can often ruin a photograph. The Lumix features Panasonic's MEGA O.I.S system to help prevent this. This system uses optical stabilization to help counteract shaking, coupled with an intelligent ISO control that automatically adjusts the camera's sensitivity to light in order to achieve a faster shutter speed.

Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens features a 28-128mm field of view, with a maximum aperture of f/3.3 at the wide end
Rugged camera is waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof
The camera features a high-resolution 12.1 megapixel sensor, allowing you to create large prints of your favorite photographs
Record video in 720p HD resolution using the AVCHD Lite codec, which can be edited and burned using the included PHOTOfunSTUDIO v3.0 HD Edition software for Windows
Takes photos in 4:3 (TV), 3:2 (4x6 print), and 16:9 (Widescreen HDTV) aspect ratios
iA mode features Face Detection with Face Recognition, Mega O.I.S., Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, and Intelligent Exposure
MEGA O.I.S. features a shifting lens element that helps to compensate for the shaking of your hand, helping to reduce camera blur for clearer pictures
The 2.7" LCD display features a wide viewing angle and adjustable backlight, ensuring that you can compose images and review photos clearly, even on bright days
Panorama Assist mode helps you to take a series of images for stitching with the included ArcSoft Panorama Maker software for Windows

Where to start?...After losing my trusty Pentax W-10 on an airline glitz, I set upon replacing it...I have no need of an underwater camera, just one that's sturdy and resistant to saltwater and the other elements of outdoor living...I came upon a great review of the latest and greatest "waterproofs", and made a decision...I ruled out the Pentax W-80 out because of its poor reviews, and focused on the Panasonic TS1 and Canon D 10...and after some consideration, eliminated the Canon, because it was just too slippery for what I do...my partner and I are "site" fishermen...casting in on sign and structure for saltwater fish, using only artificial lures and baits to attract a hit...too many wet hand opportunities for the eliptical Canon...so to the TS-1...at this early part of the season in the Northeast, I can't give you an objective appraisal for fishing...but here's what I have to date, after some generic use...PROS...great color, and a heavy, substantial "feel" for a small piece...easy to use controls, ergomically ideal, as it's easy to pick up, and use w/o dropping...and flash isn't as bad as the the reviews...CONS...sharpness/resolution not up to 12 mgs/Leitz lens...Panasonic batteries (and I purchased two) they're lame for what you pay for them)..."menu" controls, while easy to find, are hard to navigate thru, and throw away the book, cause it'll drive you crazy trying to understand...push left/push right ZOOM is clunky and difficult to use, moreover, the 28mm zoom is really nice for SOME applications (better than many other waterprrofs), but it always defauts to 28mm, and that's a problem...it's too wide for most standard shots...so let's see that default stay at the last "change"...as mentioned earlier, this is very early for an truly objective appraisal...bottom line, this is a very sturdy little piece of gear, so hope is eternal...tune in in about 6 mos for a much more in-depth,time-tested review...oh, and, for what it's worth, I'm a full time media sports photo professional...

I recently purchased the Panasonic Lumix TS1. I am a professional photographer based in Dubai, and needed to have a reliable point and shoot camera to use during a three months trip to Costa Rica.

At first, I have been quite surprised by the quality of its 12 megapixel images with its built in Leica lens. Images are sharp, crispy and saturated when using it a low speed iso and small aperture, it becomes different when the iso is set over 200 iso, very noisy..

The Macro is also a good feature when set to "AF Macro", but not when set to "Macro Zoom", pictures are jaggy and most of the time unusable.

Costa Rica in July and August tend to be very humid, as it is the rainy season and, after doing a few hikes, i realized that each time the camera would get cold, condensation would appear on the lens making the images completely blurry.

Same problem when using the camera in the Carribean near Cahuita, a place known for its coral reefs. I did some snorkeling and, after a few minutes in the water, I could no longer take photographs nor videos due to the same condensation problem.

Finally, the battery. I only got one, thinking that it would be plenty to take a few pictures a day along with a few videos. If you take pictures only then fine, but if you had a few videos with it, the battery will completely discharged after 5 or 6 videos only. So remember to purchase two or three extra batteries.

Otherwise, the Panasonic Lumix TS1 is a good alternative, when you do not want to take the risk to damage your professional photographic equipment by using it in the rain and humidity.
Since in Central America, I haven't used once my Nikon D3 nor lenses, the TS1 being good enough to take all the shots I needed as a tourist...

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Green ):

Having used Pentax dslr's for some time I was unsure about how to buy a P&S camera. I ordered the Pentax ws80 and returned it the same day...what a shame. Upon further research I decided on the DMC-TS1. I have found it to be a great compromise (waterproof) in a small sensor device. I wanted something that I can cart around all of the time esp. in the canoe. I have not printed anything, but for web pics this is certainly adequate.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Green ):

I'm a home / Building maintenance guy, who needed a tough, compact camera to take "before & after" photos of typical rapair & maintenance jobs to show building owners and prospective residential customers.

I needed a camera that would focus well in poorly lighted spaces, that are often dirty and have limited access. Also needed good close-up focusing and sharpness for equipment ID tags & failed part detail. The ability to also be able to shoot HD video clips was a pleasant bonus.

I seriously studied the user reviews of six other similar cameras before selecting the Lumix. I think that the 12MP resolution of this camera is probably the top practical limit necessary for my needs and given the limitations of compact camera optics, probably no gains in actual picture sharpness would be realized with highter sensor resolution.

The cameras' "intelegent-auto" mode serves most of my needs with no need to make time consuming manual adjustments.

After about 3-months of experience with this camera, I am very pleased with it's performance. The camera optics produce very sharp images that can be enlarged and cropped with no problems. Colors are generally fairly accurate and the auto-white balance seems to work well.

I'm not too picky about camera body color, but would have prefered a nice bright red.

I don't plan to use it underwater (intentionally!), just don't want to worry about using it in wet locations.

Battery life has been quite acceptable, but I bought a second battery, just in case! I also got a 16GB SDHC memory card, specifically for the extended video recording time it offers.

I typically use the USB cable to download photos & videos and find the transfer speed quite fast.

I found a compact, padded, belt pouch (Victorinox-Volt)that is great this camera (about $15.00).

To date, I have found nothing negative to say about the camera or it's performance. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone with similar needs.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Green ):

So far this camera has met or exceeded my expectations; it is very compact and "rugged" feeling, takes very nice quality photos AND video. I have not tried out the waterproofing yet, even though that was one of the main reasons I purchased it. The flash does seem to be a bit hit or miss; it either blasts objects that are too close, or leaves pictures looking underexposed. This can be compensated for with the exposure-compensation adjustment, but nonetheless, the flash is certainly not the strong point of this camera.
Indoors, at full telephoto + crop, there does seem to be a fair bit of noise, but c'mon, this is a 12MP camera with 4.6x zoom that is pretty much the size of a deck of cards; don't expect SLR quality.
Having said all that, I can strongly recommend this camera, with one caveat, and it is not against the camera but against the battery and Panasonic. One of the reasons I bought this camera was because I already have a Panasonic ZS3, and I assumed that I could share the batteries between the two cameras. No such luck; Panasonic has apparently decided to make a different battery for every different camera. Wasteful, costly, and unnecessary.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Green ):

If you are an amateur-pro Lumix/Leica digital user who likes to have a sidearm for bad weather and beach days, or work-related documentation (e.g. construction sites) this is the one for you. I researched all the cheap shock, dust, water resistant cameras for months before buying this one. Test drove the Olympus competitor and grew grey hairs waiting for the auto-focus to work (low-light interior would not work at all!). The Canon is just ugly IMO but I hear it is better for underwater use. I go to the beach a few times a year and I'm not a scuba diver, so I don't care. I got this based on my trusted experience with Leicasonics. Image quality is exceptional, especially given the high Megapixel-small sensor thing, which I usually hate. Low-light autofocus is very good, but ISO from 400 and up is noisy and chroma-filled (a con). I use this in the construction/demolition industry, where moisture, low-light, dust temperature and weather extremes associated with outside work are an everyday part of life. So far, so good. And yes, I already dropped it from a 4ft height onto a hard floor...no problem! Don't expect DSLR quality or DSLR manual controls, although you can modify the settings to have some "manual" control over your shooting. Do expect a great work tool and weekend warrior for your beach or camping trips, or street photography, given the quick AF. If they are still on sale at B&H for [$], buy one. I think it's worth its weight in gold.

The lumix line is great, but I always bought ruggedized cameras until this one because I'm kind of rough on them.

So, I was totally pleased with the image quality and shooting modes. Good low-light sensitivity and auto focus is just fine. The only problem I had is the video isn't true HD. It's HD lite. AVDHD or something - it outputs in an .mts file format which you have to download a converter for. Once that is done, though, it looks dandy.

For someone who has broken multiple digital cameras in the past from dropping them, this camera is well worth the price tag. I received it in the mail not too long ago, and already used it at a wedding this past weekend. The pictures came out great, and it even withheld its first drop, no problem. Haven't tried out its waterproof capabilities, but am looking forward to it.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Green ):

        Overall, a great camera.

        Pros:
Large enough to point accurately while in motion.
Buttons are large enough to use it while wearing snow gloves.
Extended zoom can be helpful so you don't have to think about cropping a shot later to fake it.
Flash burst mode is pretty sweet.
HD video is awesome, though some will find it really challenging to take a steady vid with a camera this small.
Starts recording video very quickly, the dedicated record button is a must.

        Cons:
No lens cover, pretty much unforgiveable. One of my sports is kayaking and water spots are extremely frustrating. Have used the Olympus 770 and 1070 extensively and that was never an issue. When the Olympus line adds HD video I'll switch back in a heartbeat.
Proprietary USB connection, this is just a terrible, horrible, very bad idea. I know this enables you to use the same port to connect a TV via composite RCA... I don't care –especially given the hdmi port- give me a connection that accepts a cable I can find at any friends' house.
Weak plastic tripod threads -also a common problem- seriously, make it stronger already.

Note: Be sure to buy a decent quality class 4 card to not have it be a bottleneck.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Green ):

I spend most of my time traveling, including long motorcycle trips, arround the world. Now I don't need to worry about rain, dust or vibration on my camera. So far no problems. Great pictures with vivid colors thanks to the Leica lens. No need to take my bulky SLR anymore. However, I wish It would of come with an all weather soft case, for the price!

I just took this camera on a long california coastline bike ride and it worked great. The video was excellent and the images were perfect. If I had to complain about anything it would be that I had to change the video settings to be able to download them off the camera.

The camera is great so far. It came with the latest firmware. It is very easy to figure out without the manual. The menus are very user friendly. The image looks great both on camera and on the PC. Haven't tried it underwater yet, but based on all the professional reviews it seems like it's the best in class. Has HD video with an LED light for both stills and movies. It is quite compact and feels very durable. It does produce a slight electric hum when turned on. Not sure if it's supposed to be like that. I haven't played with another one in a store yet. So far so good!

I use this for quick shots at work and for Boy Scout functions. Fits in pocket, battery life is real good and works great in variety of light settings and no need to shy away from bad weather, rafting or crashing through the surf.
Recycle time is a little slow but overall I would certainly reccomend this camera for outdoor active person's.

We bought this camera because we lost our last Lumix (that makes two now). We love Lumix super zooms but the size always made it leave our pocket. This new TS-1 is now a pocketable size, and has the same simple panasonic menu layout. One new feature I love is the 1-button push record video. No longer do you have to scroll to video on wheel. The image quality is ok, not as good as my TZ super zooms but I'm still trying it out. I haven't had the chance to try at the beach or snow yet but I look forward not worrying about using in ocean or getting a little sand on it.

Great pictures, great video. Only one complaint is that most software (picasa and such) don't recognize the video format which makes it a bit difficult to get the video off the camera.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Green ):

Overall it's a good camera. Probably my favorite part is the long battery life and the HD movies. It tkaes decent pics, and the meter does a decent job. AF is fairly quick.

It's also not without it's quirks. Sometimes it keeps the ISO very low and also keep the shutter speed very low instead of bumping both up a little. The flash fires plenty (if it's set to auto-on), and the ISO is always kept low for that too. Personally I don't like cameras w/ the lens in the corner--very easy to smudge the lens and very easy to cover it up with your fingers.

All-in-all I'm pleased with it. I haven't tested the shock-proof aspects (thankfully), but I have taken lots of underwater pics.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Green ):

Camera is fantastic. I bought it because my SLR is to big to take on some trips and we were missing pics of our kids. Takes clean crisp pictures for a point and shoot. It is flat and easy to carry which was a better selling point to me than 33 feet of water proof depth that the bulky cannon has.
The HD video is a nice feature but most pic hosting sites will not upload it so i use the 9 min Jpeg movie feature. Still great quality.
Remember it is not an SLR so the on the fully automatic mode there is a slight delay from the red eye feature. You can custom set in another mode an get rid of the delay. All in all it it is a GREAT camera. 400 will get you a case and 8 gig card. 8 gigs gets you 1200 photos.
                    Enjoy
