The Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera from Panasonic is an ultracompact point and shoot camera, which easily fits into a shirt pocket or purse. The slim camera features an impressive Leica wide-angle zoom lens, perfect for capturing group shots when zoomed out or individual portraiture when zoomed all the way in.
Featuring an impressive waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof design, this pocket shooter can be used in less-than-ideal environments, or for a day on a sandy beach. You can even take it with you in the water, as it is rated to depths of up to 9.84' (3 m). Clumsy users will appreciate its durability: the camera has passed drop tests from heights of 4.92' (1.5 m).
The innovative Intelligent Auto (iA) helps you to take clearer, sharper photographs. This mode includes a Face Recognition function, which can "remember" registered faces. The camera will help to optimize focus and exposure so that the owners of these registered faces will be bright and in focus in photos.
Shaky hands in less-than-ideal lighting conditions can often ruin a photograph. The Lumix features Panasonic's MEGA O.I.S system to help prevent this. This system uses optical stabilization to help counteract shaking, coupled with an intelligent ISO control that automatically adjusts the camera's sensitivity to light in order to achieve a faster shutter speed.

I am a professional photographer For the United States Army who has personally owned the Canon 10d, 1d Mark II, and the 30d, as well as the Panasonic DMC-TZ5 and am currently shooting with addition Nikon D300 in my kit. I recently deployed for a month in the Mohave Desert to test out my new cameras dust proof abilities. I love the the build of the camera and the confidence not to be destroyed by extreme conditions. The DMC-TS1 is the perfect camera for sand and dusty environments a Soldier would be in as well as the ability to withstand the many bumps and bangs of my vest as I train. The BIGGEST and really only downfall of the camera is the location of the record button. Instead of using the shutter trigger to activate and deactivate the movie mode, it is located on the backside of the body which sets up a lot of shake time in your videos as you use your thumb to stabilize the camera. The DMC-TZ5 has all the recording features within the trigger button. I love that. However, since the record button is on the back of the camera, it allows the user to apply the different recording, filter, and distortion modes that the camera offers. Of course if your into post production software it doesn't matter.I would definitely recommend this camera, and in fact already have. Its its low light ability and wide angle lens are good for a point and shoot. You just cant beat the wide angle! But I wish the zoom was a little longer - that being said - its an all internal focusing lens. Nothing zooms out to get destroyed. I almost destroyed the DMC-TZ5 on several training events. I mostly bought this camera for its compact size and HD video capabilities which are great. See my photos and videos [@]

I'd only owned this camera for a little while and was really liking it, when I took it into the desert for a camping trip. We had a sand storm and after a few hours it completely stopped working. I was unable to move the zoom rocker or even press the shutter button down. So much for it being dust proof. I was able to clean the sand out of it, however, and get it working again.
Then I went on a surf trip to Mexico. Now, the who reason I bought this camera was because it's supposed to be waterproof. I paddled out with it, and the camera completely died within three minutes. Let me be clear here: the camera is rated to a depth of 10 feet. At no point was the camera any deeper than 2 or 3 feet. Totally died, and could not even get it to turn on again for a week (until it's insides dried out, I assume). By that point the trip was over, and I got no photos.
Double fail. Luckily, it was still under warranty and I was able to send it back. I really liked the camera, but it just didn't live up to the ruggedness standards it claimed. I'm going to upgrade to the TS2, which is supposed to be waterproof to 33 feet. Hopefully I'll have better luck with that one.

Have a GREEN model, which has now been discontinued...and rated this earlier, largely untested,[...]but here's the REAL skinny...really disappointed w/ image quality...just so-so, at best, and w/ a Leitz/Leica lens??...like the wide angle, but NOT THE DEFAULT to it after changing the settings...why can't it stay on what you set ?...and the REALLY bad thing is the battery life...poor, at best...and, after footing an extra $30 bucks for a REAL panasonic battery too...shoulda gone to the web for 1/3 that price...I thoroughly searched for a good replacement for my more-than-worthy Pentax W-10 after losing it in an airlines glitch...everything I read was good for this one...lemme tell you, I shoot sports for a living, and this camera does NOT live up to it's reviews...don't know what those other folks raving about it are looking for in a camera, but this one DOESN'T impress me...and too bad...

The camera is nice pocket size camera and good for snow, rain, etc.
However, the usual buyer for this camera is more concerned about weather/waterproofing. Honestly, waterproofing is good (based on 2 weeks use in pool, rain, and swimming in the Amazon river). But it has 2 flaws: 1) the lens is not as water repelent as Pentax W60 (you have to watch water drops and clean them) and 2) Once the battery hatch is open it is not protected against humidity in the air (the lens will fog inside and no way to clean it). So if you have no access to air-conditioned room to change batteries/SD in your trips I suggest looking at Pentax (but Pentax has no true IS).

"I used this camera on a turkey hunt in Nebraska and it was everything I read about. Quiet (you need to be very quiet turkey hunting), great pictures with it's 12 mega pixel format, waterproof, shock proof, dust proof and all of it's features were tested in the difficult conditions I experienced on this hunt"

The good:
I bought this "tough" camera, bot specifically to take it underwater or to the beach, but more so I could throw it in my bag and mistreat it a little without it breaking. So far it has been great in this regard. I find that it also takes great pictures during daylight.
The bad:
In low-light, with the flash operating, I found the the pictures to be a tad on the white-side.
Also, none of my friends seem to be able to use it without partly covering the lens with a finger or two... I have not had this problem myself though.

Just started putting it through its paces. Initial reaction is that this is a nice little camera. Most important element for me is minimal shutter lag and quick/accurate focus. Shutter lag is not bad at all (for point of reference I do have a couple DSLRs and an older Canon G3) and from what I have seen, focus looks good. Found the interface intuitive (didn't even read the manual) and quite like the ergonomics. I don't pixel peep and have yet to download the images, but from what I have seen on onscreen review, images look great.
Haven't found much that I don't like as yet, however only time will tell on that.

Recreation, back up for my professional camera.
A setting I wish it had was being able to control the F stop. Some photos come out dark on auto.
I dont like the new batteries that digital cameras are using now. This camera does not have a source to charge it on the go, an outlet is required. You cannot just put in a battery from the store.

Here's the thing - this isn't a camera for taking images that need to be noise-free and absolutely flawless. This is a camera for throwing in your pocket and snapping photos whenever and wherever you need to. It is tough, and it works well. If you want low noise and no chromatic aberration, get a DSLR.
I will say that this camera is more flexible than it first seems. It is not very customizable - you can't set the aperture or shutter values or the flash intensity - but there are many "scene" modes that, if used in the right place, will let you tweak out the images you want.
So, if you're going for a hike, to the beach, or work in a nasty place, this is a great camera for you.

I only owned this camera for a few days before i returned it. my biggest complaint was that it was not small enough for me. I am use to a canon powershot elf that is the size of a credit card. this camera was not. however it was the size of a deck of cards and took pretty good pictures. although it put a strange shadow on people in certain lighting. I did not get a chance to try out the waterproofing but I would assume it would take pretty good pictures.

Things that are great about it: On auto mode there is almost 25 spécific views. So easy to use and it adjust itself. Also on manuel mode when I change the settings it applies to the screen so it's easy to imagine what the picture will look like. Amazing!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 Digital Camera (Silver):
I do a lot of rugged activity, mountain bike riding, skiing, motorcycle riding and backpacking. I needed a rugged pocket camera with decent lens and the durability to last. this camera fits the bill. I checked out the Olympus Touch series, but found the quality of the lens quite poor. I also own a Lumix DMC LX3, which I feel is a excellent 3/4 camera. I compared it to it with the same shots and here's what I found.
The color and clarity isn't of the quality of the LX3, but you can't beat the ruggedness of the TS1. I can put it in my jersey pocket riding my road bike and mountain bike. Take shots while skiing and not worry about getting it wet or dropping it in the snow, which I tend to do qauite often. Lens quality is satisfactory and with photoshop, I can almost come close to the LX3. the difference is the lens. You can't beat the lends of the LX3. However, for the price and toughness of this camera, it excels in the class of tough camera. It's not as rugged as the Olympus Tough camera, but the lens quality is twice as good.
Bad points? lens is too close to your fingers so be careful not place your finger in the shot. Flash is only good for fill and close ups. The size is larger than most pocket digitals, but it is small enough to put in your pocket. It's also heavier than most, but that is probably due to how it is built to drop.
Bottom line...a great camerat for it's intended purpose. Better than the Olympus tough cameras and very good lens quality.

I already own cameras for general use...but was looking for a rugged solidly built camera for outdoors and water resistant. Having owned the camera for just a short time, I am so far greatly pleased with the durability and sold construction of this camera. Still need to learn more about all the various setting options, as the icons are often unfamiliar to me. The menu is not as user friendly as I like...guess I will have to read the manual more...
Image quality so far as been OK.

I intend to use the the camera to make HD movies in my trips here in Brazil with family friends, im really amazed by the quality of the motion picture, still picture quality as well, great effects with an easy-to-use software make it a perfect combination, since i havent had the chance to try it underwater, a little bit worried about that at the moment, ill give it a try latter. Ive heard bad things and read not so good reviews about this camera but im so surprised of how great it is, better than i expected! im still working on how to edit this avchd lite files, but i had no problem uploading to my laptop (vista op), im so excited to try all features of the cam, so I have to go now! cant wait, a must buy for adventures users!
