The d2 Blu-ray Drive from LaCie is an external Blu-ray disc burner that can also burn and read DVD and CD discs. It connects to your computer via either the FireWire-400 or USB 2.0 interfaces. The drive allows you to write data to single-layer and dual-layer Blu-ray discs, which can hold up to 50GB of data--more than 10 times that of a standard DVD-R. These high-capacity discs are ideal for data archiving, backup, and HD video delivery.

I purchased this drive to archive raw video clips and all associated project files from my Final Cut Pro jobs. I'll shoot 2 to 3 one-hour HDV tapes for a customer, encode the tapes then finish editing via external HDD. This workflow works well until I lost a hard disk. You will loose a hard disk one day also, I guarantee it.
The LaCie drive is fast and very reliable. It comes with Toast Titanium 9 which has met all of my needs thus far. The feature which is most valuable to me is Toast's ability to archive a 65Gig FCP project and span multiple 25Gig BD-R disc without breaking a file while spanning disc. This makes archiving projects a snap.
I have not burned any Blu-ray HD videos yet, so I cannot comment on the drive and softwares ability to create Blu-ray Video disc.

Finally, a Blu-Ray burner that works on an Intel Mac OS 10.4 and higher. I use it regularly, and it works great! It takes a long time to burn an hour video, but I just chalk that up to the fact that it's still a developing media. I am a professional videographer and am loving the switch to HD.

We use this product to burn Blu-Ray DVDs from our Macs with Adobe Encore. Works well, no driver issues.
Our unit came with Toast 9, which is a bit dated since Toast 10 has been out for quite a while.

Comments about LaCie d2 Blu-ray Drive:
Despite me being a novice or beginner I can write, I did my home work and found this at at most affordable price. And was pleasantly surprised at and how sturdy it apprears, well it works and the quality of the disc it burns. I do have to admit that the software that came with the drive didn't cut it and made poor quality video in HD but great in SD, so I found another software that produced High Quality High Definition Blu-Ray disc in an incredable amount of time for about 100 dollars. So don't relay or beleive this drive is poor, is because I promise it is the software and not the drive. after using another software on a two year old I-Mac partioning the drive and running windows XP with SP3 pack. I was able to burn a 45 minuet BluRay disc start to finish in 25 minuets flat, No Joke. and the quality shows on my 50 inch HDTV like I hooked up my Sony FX1000 directly! Best of luck to all you out there and remember this drive is on the money just the software is week, ciao

I am a dolphin researcher and not the most technology oriented person. This blu ray burner was so easy that literally I plugged it in and 5 minutes later I had my first blu ray. It was amazing because the results were astounding in terms of broadcast quality.
A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++product. By the way it is on a Mac.
