This is the Elinchrom BX-Ri 500/500 To Go Set - 2 Monolight Kit.
Building on the foundation of the RX the BX-Ri series is robotically manufactured, making possible extreme precision, light weight and the addition of computer chips for software implementation. Decoding the Ri designation, the R indicates remote operation capability, while the "i" stands for Eye-cell.
A Skyport EL receiver is now built-in, meaning not only remote, wireless triggering regardless of obstructions, at distances up to 394 feet, but also powering up and down or on and off with complete control of the modeling light. Eye-Cell is particularly handy when using the BX-Ri with the on-board optical slave to sync cameras with pre-flash or red-eye function. The photographer simply programs the number of pre-flashes specific to the camera or lets the BX-Ri do it automatically.
Flash duration is an extremely fast 1/1558 sec., capable of freezing action without blur. Of course, that would be academic if your strobe didn't recycle fast enough to keep up with the energy on the shoot. Elinchrom has that covered with recycling times of 1.45 sec. (115V) at maximum power.
Purchasing a BXRi monohead gives you the key to one of the most extensive arrays of reflectors and light-shaping tools available, including the legendary Octa bank. Additionally, virtually every independent manufacturer of light modifiers makes Elinchrom compatible products.
Using your gear abroad can sometimes be problematic but the BXRi is a world-citizen, accommodating power requirements from 90-260V via auto-detection circuitry. Now you can avoid the hassles and uncertainty of overseas rental, while bringing Elinchrom quality along wherever the job is.
This Kit includes 2- BX 500 Ri 500Ws monolights, a Skyport Universal Radio Transmitter, 2- 25.5" square softboxes, 2-stands and 2- 16' sync cords. A light stand bag and a monolight bag are also included.| Maximum Watt/Seconds | 500 x2 |

The BXRi 500 monolights are properly rated at about a 4.8 to 4.9 out of five. The somewhat hokey 26 inch softboxes drags my rating of the two light kit down to 4. Frankly, the old BX 400 hundred kits with their umbrellas and reflectors was more functional/versatile than are the new kits with the BXRi 500(and/or 250) monolights.
The lights and the EL-Skyport transmitter that comes with the kit is a dynamite combination. Now you can remotely and near exactly adjust light output of hairlights, kickers and other hard-to-access monolights by simple metering at the subject and adjusting the output level of the light without moving.
The new BXRi 500s employ a very quiet and efficient bottom-housed cooling fan. I find this to work very well, even when using a solid gel filter on a reflector. This is important as cool operation extends the life of the monolight.
There is one drawback to the bottom mounted fan housing. This restricts the distance of travel of a shaft through the umbrella mount so that focusing of an umbrella can become a bit restricted. I have not found this to be a major issue, but it should be noted. Also, the umbrella mount on the BXRi lights is upgraded from the two piece mount of the older BX lights.
The light quality of the BXRi 500s is typical of Elinchrom's superior quality. The control is excellent. The color temperature variation across the power range is minimal.
Finally, the kit case and all of its contents are first class except for the two softboxes. In my opinion, these monolights are a combination of state-of-the-art electronics with excellent build quality. The kit is ready to use without buying any accessories other than a flash meter and a camera.

I'm giving this product 2 stars because "pro" level monolights are supposed to be built well enough to move around and travel with without breaking.
I love the feature of controlling the strobe's power from the Skyport - that's primarily why I bought this light. When I received this set of lights and took one out of the case the plastic tilt knob broke. It's plastic and it's probably the most used piece on this light! So I decided to upgrade to the RX 600 lights which costs me several hundred dollars more thinking they'd be built better since they are "pro" quality.
I received them today and guess what? I heard a rattling sound in the box and opened it to find that the tilt knob was broken in the same place! C'mon Elinchrom! You have a quality problem here.
I am really wanting to like these lights because Elinchrom has a good reputation - I used the equipment several years ago at the Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum and they worked flawlessly for a year while I was photographing there!
So what to do now... return these AGAIN to BH? By the way BH has been GREAT through this ordeal... they are very professional and polite etc... THANK YOU BH!
I will call an Elinchrom rep in Los Angeles tomorrow and see what he says about this problem. Or I guess I could look for a different brand that has the feature allowing me to control the power of each light remotely. I think only Paul C. Buff does that but I could be wrong.
I hope Elinchrom is listening! I really want to use Elinchrom lights but I need them to be built durable! Stay tuned...

Comments about Elinchrom BX-Ri 500/500 To Go Set - 2 Monolight Kit (90-260VAC):
I received this product after a long wait since it was out of stock for a while. I am very pleased with this product overall. However, I gave it four stars because there seems to be an issue with one of my modeling lights. It will sometimes fail to come on and I have to recycle the power to the light. It has only happened twice so far. Ive registered this product with elinchrom, in case they take a dump on me. Other than that..I found the soft boxes easy to assemble, I was shooting within 15 minutes of unboxing and setting up. Good quality lights.

Comments about Elinchrom BX-Ri 500/500 To Go Set - 2 Monolight Kit (90-260VAC):
The lights work well and for the price, with the built-in Skyports and included Transmitter and case, this is a good value. We bought this as an alternative to the Scott Kebly Kit which didn't have as good a rebate with it and as a result could be built up individually for slightly less money.
- stands are just OK - replaced them with A630B's and are using the kit stands for backdrop support and they are perfect for that.
- kit includes the newer SPEED Transmitter even though that is not indicated - so don't order an additional one as we did.
- wish the lights would go to lower power, sometimes they are too bright when used close to the model and we need to shoot at f14 a good bit. more $$$ and the RX series will solve that issue or an ND filter if you need to control DOF.
- the softboxes are very basic and somewhat small, but work well enough for headshots/portraits and they are not nearly as difficult to assemble and use as some say - the first time or two, they are a tight fit, but once they stretch out a bit, they assemble easily.

I purchased the Elinchrom BX-Ri 500/500 To Go Set for photographing large native american squash blossom jewelry. The pictures are excellent with lots of depth of field focus and very sharp images. I did a lot of research as to quality and repeated performance. The Elinchrom BX-Ri filled the bill. I would suggest that Elinchrom go back to the drawing board with the Skyport Speed transmitter. I can't get it to work and had to send it back for repair. The sync cord works just fine. Excellent product.

This is a great light set. Definitely suits my needs as a newborn and child photographer. Only bad thing is that one of the modeling lamp fuses blew the second I turned it on. But clearly that just shows that it's effective ;)
Great lights, very happy.

This is an extremely easy to use lighting setup. The remote capabilities allow me to quickly set a wide range of lighting without the hassles of cables. I'm using each light with a Vagabond Mini on location shoots, along with a few SB700's and the opportunities are endless. I've shot portraits and large groups, they have the power to handle just about anything. I don't like the softbox construction, kind of a hassle to assemble/dissasemble but their size is ideal for most situations. The fact that the whole set fits in a couple of small carriers is definitely a plus.

These strobes are awesome! I placed the order, received the shipment, and was doing on the beach doing a dance photography shoot in less than a week. The strobe controls are very user friendly and I was familiar with them in one practice setup prior to my shoot. The built-in Skyport receivers make it so simple to be up and running. Slap on the hot-shoe transmitter and it's literally plug-and-play. Power up and start shooting. The 500watt power was plenty for me to shoot in broad daylight covering multiple dancers. The kit is also pretty light and packs up in two bags; one for the strobes/softboxes and one for the light stands. I'm already an Elinchrom junkie.

Comments about Elinchrom BX-Ri 500/500 To Go Set - 2 Monolight Kit (90-260VAC):
It is simple to set up out of the box but a couple things were confusing. I had trouble getting the modelling lamp to light and also had difficulty with the communication between Skyport trigger and the camera.
B&H sales (Cesar) bent over backward to help and when we didn't come up with the solution, he referred me to Elinchrom Tech support. The tech at Elinchrom was also very helpful, recognized the problem and guided me to the solution.
A very satisfactory product and superb support from B&H and Elinchrom.
Do not hesitate to buy.

Although 500 w/s may deter you, these heads are able to put out enough power for professional studio use. Built in Skyport system works perfectly, but the on camera remote feels cheap. Included Manfrotto light stands are solid and smooth when folding.

If you think photoshop is cheating stay away form this product
I did get my Kit yesterday. setup was very easy. Used the trigger on my camera and it was ready to shoot right away and worked after like 10 minutes (unpacking and assembly)
The Kit is just amazing. Have not had much time to test. At maximum power they are like an explosion of light turning the whole room into a white glow.
When powered down the create absolutely great light. Very soft. Easy to adjust and create nice effects.
As said in the title if you thing photoshop is cheating the these lights should probably be outlawed right away. From the few pictures last night my guess is that to create the same effects in photoshop or gimp would take me 1 hour and… Read more

I had been wanting to purchase some lighting equipment for about a year. I attended the Scott Kelby Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It class and was really impressed with the quality of light and performance he was getting with this gear. So I bought it. My in-house studio is 11 ft by 22 ft. I have only had the gear for less than 2 weeks. Everything works great. The wireless skyport trigger for your DSLR hotshoe is fantastic and simple to use. The built-in receivers on the strobes are a huge plus since you don't have to worry about something else that could fail/break/lose. The light output is nice and consistent. The only thing that was challenging was bending the rods to put the softboxes together. I'm very happy with this gear and am looking forward to using it more in the future.

Totally my fault for not reading more carefully but I thought I was saving a few dollars[...]but another kit somewhere else offers 2 Elinchrom reflectors (16 cm 90°)and an umbrella. This one from B&H does not come with any reflectors and now I have to shop for more. [...].Don't expect much from the softboxes, which don't even come with some instructions on how not to shred them as you fight to put them together. Not brain surgery but you feel as if you're fighting to put spokes on tissue paper.Other than that, I can hardly wait to put these lights to use.
