The key to success with the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is to know how to use it within its limitations. This camera is best used by the serious amateur as a supplement to a DSLR kit. Of course, its a very nice choice for a rank novice who just needs a good point-and-shoot, but perhaps a bit of overkill for those photogrpahers. The SD780 fills a gap between no camera and the availability of very high quality photographs from a non-photographic event.
This morning, I had breakfast with my mother at a sit-down chain restaurant near home. I would certainly have never entertained the notion of going to the table with either of my DSLRs, but I slipped the SD780 into my shirt pocket and managed to get a very nice photo of me mum from just across the table. I turned off the flash and jacked the ISO up to 800, and no one even noticed I was taking pictures. I tweaked the image when I got home and had a beautiful 12 X 16 inch image. Color, sharpness and noise were all very good to outstanding.
The strength of this camera is its form factor. Its small and sparsely elegant. It reminds me of a Contax T3, but even more demure. The image quality is very good to outstanding. The optical viewfinder is not as useless as some reviews have suggested, but it is a means-of-last-resort option. I have no problem seeing the entire viewfinder while wearing glasses. The flash has a very short working distance; its adequate for its intended purpose (i.e. people just across the table), but I prefer photographing without using it. Shutter lag is virtually non-existant once focus has been achieved. In most lighting scenarios, AF is achieved just shy of instantaneously. The AiAF face detection feature seems to work well, but I'm old school and prefer the center AF sensor as the only active one. Write time is quick. I have not tested the burst rate capability, as my style of photography does not depend on that issue. Noise is well controlled up to ISO 800, I have not gone beyond that setting, and usually do not do so for any of my images on any camera. The LCD screen is useful even in bright sunlight. I turn off most of the options and bells-and-whistles features. That said, I do like the look imparted by the "Positive Film" My Colors selection.
A 1 or 2 GB SD card will get you either 300 or 600 +/- images, respectively. These smaller capacity cards will work with the old-style SD card readers, and I see absolutely no reason to go for a higher capacity SD-HC card for this camera.

Very small and lightweight. Was not prepared for such a small screen (guess that comes with the camera size!). The specs are nice and the pictures are pretty good with some cool features. I was not so excited about the HD video which I thought would be a lot sharper. The zoom on video recording mode is definitely a plus however. The battery has been phenomenal so far. Overall was a little disapointing.

Great camera that integrates a lot of features into a very small package. I purchased this product as a Canon factory refurbished item. Could not find anything wrong cosmetically or functionality - it looks and works just like a new camera.

I bought this camera because it was small and had a viewfinder. It is a great camera for traveling and I can easily slip it into my pocket. The picture quality is good, and It has a viewfinder, which makes it useable in bright light conditions that would create glare.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera refurbished and chose it after I found that every new camera I could afford - and quite a few over my budget - no longer had view finders. This one does although it's so small one has to really need to use it. But it is there and that was a critical point in my choice.
I love the images this camera takes. I've used Canon professional image stabilization lenses and have had other point and shoots with (and without) the feature. It makes images that were borderline quite usable. Since I rarely take a p&s shot with the camera rock steady, I can't imaging going without IS now.
Another plus was the battery and I'm pleased to report that not only does it have a lithium ion battery but that battery holds up for quite a long time. Which is a good thing because I sometimes go quite awhile between shots.
I like the feel of the camera. It's small but quite well balanced. For anyone familiar with Canon layouts, this one is reasonably intuitive. I've seen reviews that are critical of the flat buttons and I agree it would have been nicer if they'd been raised. But I feel very comfortable using them.
It can be hard to find this camera new now although there are plenty available and I would consider them worth the value. I'd certainly recommend the refurbished model as well. I'm very pleased with it.

Have both the A700 and SD1100. This thing is compact and takes great photos, perfect for the traveling I do. I would recommend a large SD card (8 gigs) because the 720 video eats up a lot of space.

Terrific small point and shoot camera. No excuses for not having it with you when you need it. Fits is a pocket nicely. Images are crisp with great color balance and response time is very good. Zoom is OK and what you would expect in a point and shoot.
Only minor caution is that camera is small and wrist strap is NOT adjustable so there is a risk of dropping it. Takes a little getting used to holding onto in some situations.

Bought this camera for my teenage daughter for a school trip to Europe. Her attention to photographic detail is not the best (she had other things on her mind) yet she produced some very nice images. When she stood still and gave it a effort the photos were amazingly good for such a tiny little camera. It won't replace my pro-slrs for me but I wouldn't mind having this little camera with me all the time just in case.
Some images were blurry but I suspect it was more her constant movement rather than IS failure.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Camera (Black):
My main camera is a Canon EOS 50D. I wanted a camera small enough to fit in my pocket when I'm out walking. I also wanted to be more inconspicuous when taking photos in a restaurant (I sometimes write about food) or other places where a large camera would not be possible or convenient.
The SD80 is a great little camera for the price! It is easy to operate and the manual is user friendly.
I am impressed with its ability to create beautiful prints, both color and black and white. It's macro capability is excellent. The SD80 also has the option of using a grid on the monitor for those "rule of third" shots and making sure your horizons are level.
In one of the reviews someone wrote the viewfinder is useless. I have to agree.
The only Con is the zoom. Once you exceed 3x, the quality of the photo drops off considerably which you can see in the monitor. The higher the zoom the great the increase in noise.
The SD80 is not replacing my EOS 50D, it's going to allow me to take more spontaneous photos because of its compact size.

I didn't realize how small these Canon ELPHs really were until I saw one in a store, and then I couldn't believe the specs on the card. Just the week before, I had bought a pair of Canon SX200s primarily for shooting 720p Youtube videos, and here was the same CCD and image processor in a cell-phone-sized package. After checking out the reviews online, I ordered one. They say the best camera is the one you have with you, and since this easily and inconspicuously fits in a shirt pocket, I literally take this camera almost anywhere I go. Even when I'm carrying the SX200s and a dSLR in a bag, I still find lots of opportunities when it's more convenient to grab this from my pocket and get a shot within a matter of seconds.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Camera (Black):
This is the third Canon Elf camera I've had, and certainly the best ever. It's small: about the same size as a credit card and about 1/2" thick. Small enough to make you forget that it's in your pocket. The controls are in the same place as the previous generations, which is convenient if you used them before.
Pro: The LCD display is incredibly sharp and includes face-recognition and automatic red-eye removal (you can turn it off if you don't want it). At 12 Megapixels, there's enough information that you can crop a lot of the final image and still expect a good print. The battery is good for a couple of hundred shots, which should be enough for a day of sightseeing though you could use it up faster if you're shooting video a lot. Finally, the video is extremely good, without the "swimmy" effect that some other cameras have.
Cons: The buttons are all flush with the camera body, which might be a problem for people with fat finger, though not a problem for me. The zoom is only 3x - a trade off in a camera this small.

I can honestly not think of a con for this camera, picture quality is amazing, easy to use, good video quality as well. The black is nice and sleek. I had an older version of Canon's powershot, so I decided to stick with it when buying a new one. Never been disappointed by a Canon!

I bought this product for a very specific use: capturing the amazing scenery during my long trail runs/races. This means, I needed a compact, durable, quick-shooting camera that would perform for shots taken while running down a particularly scenic trail. The camera takes rich, detailed photos and conveys the beauty of my run like I had hoped. While I do have to slow down to almost a full stop to snap a picture, the image stabilization does keep most of the pictures blur-free. The metal case has already survived a few falls from my race-vest chest pouch. The size is perfect for my needs. I'm a petite woman and don't have too much trouble, myself, but I will agree with most reviewers that the buttons are too small for a larger-fingered person. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.
