The Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Elph Digital Camera provides a 12.1 megapixel resolution and a 3x Optical Zoom lens with Canon's renowned Optical Image Stabilization system to produce excellent image quality, even under low light shooting conditions. The camera incorporates the exclusive DIGIC 4 image processor which offers impressive response times and also powers Canon's unique Face Detection and Noise Reduction Technologies, making it easier for users to capture sharp, well-exposed images in any shooting situation. Furthermore, the 2.5" PureColor II LCD display has a tough scratch-resistant and anti-reflective coating featuring Night Display for easy viewing in low light. The camera also has a real-image optical viewfinder, that zooms along with the lens. With all of these premium features, the PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Elph is also incredibly slim, measuring only 0.8" (21 mm) deep, and possesses a clean, minimalist design that evokes the classic Canon Elph film camera.

12.1 Megapixel Resolution
The 12.1 megapixel resolution of the SD780 IS Digital Elph ensures that images are captured with all the detail needed for large photo quality prints
3x Optical Zoom Lens
The genuine Canon 3x optical zoom lens on the SD780 produces images with all the clarity and brilliance you'd expect from a world leader in advanced optics technology. The 3x zoom range can handle most typical shooting situations while the 4x digital zoom is included to get extra close with a combined zoom rage of 12x
Optical Image Stabilizer Technology
The lens of the SD780 is equipped with Canon's acclaimed Optical Image Stabilizer Technology that automatically detects and corrects for camera shake so you'll get steady, crisp, brilliant images - under just about any shooting conditions
Slim, Stylish Design
The SD780 IS has a chic, modern, minimalist design akin to the classic Canon Elph film cameras, with a classic Box & Circle design
DIGIC 4 Processor
Delivering fast, responsive camera performance and superb image rendering, the DIGIC 4 processor also enables Canon's Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Furthermore, the processor incorporates iSAPS scene-recognition technology using an internal database of thousands of different photos to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance
Face Detection Technology
Canon's powerful Face Detection Technology delivers impressive results - simply press the Shutter Button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. The SD780 IS also adds Face Detection White Balance - calculating white balance for the best possible skin tones. Furthermore, the Face Select and Track features lets the SD780 IS Digital ELPH user highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera concentrates on that person, even as they move around the scene
Face Self-Timer
The innovative Face-Self Timer makes getting into your picture easier than ever. With this mode engaged, the camera automatically detects any increase in the number of faces, makes the appropriate exposure adjustments and snaps the shot when that face stops moving, Now there is no need for the photographer to rush into a group shot- just put the camera on a stand or tripod, and the camera will wait for the photographer and all of the others in the shot to get on-camera before it takes the shot. In addition, the camera's motion detection system now tracks moving subjects in a much larger range, and the Servo AF retains focus on a moving subject for the perfect shot, without the need to refocus
Advanced Red-eye Correction
Canon's Red-eye Correction system lets you handle Red-eye problems in two ways. The Red-eye Correction can be applied during shooting by using the Face Detection Technology to recognize and remove red-eye from flash images as they're taken, before the file is written to the memory card. It's also possible to correct red-eye during image playback, using simple settings in the cameras menu
Intelligent Contrast Correction
The DIGIC 4 processor enables Canon's exclusive i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which brightens dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for more natural looking images, even in bright daylight where shadow details can be lost. Users can even apply i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated
High ISO Sensitivity
The PowerShot SD780 features ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto setting (equivalent to ISO 3200) that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, or when shooting fast-moving subjects, giving you greater flexibility for shooting
Shoot & View Video in HD
The PowerShot SD780 IS can record high definition video (1280 x 720@ 30 fps), as well as standard and low resolution video. The camera can also play back video and still images onto an HDTV with the purchase of an optional mini-HDMI connector so you can enjoy HD video and images with no degradation of the image or sound quality. In addition the HD output allows users to view up to 130 still images at once in a thumbnail view so you can quickly find your favorite shot
20 Shooting Modes and My Colors Photo Effects
The PowerShot SD780 has 20 easy-to-use shooting modes including a wide selection of Special Scene modes such as Portrait, Indoor and Night Snapshot, and you can quickly access these modes via the Touch Control Dial. The camera also includes My Colors photo effects, which allow artistic photo effects like color accent and color swap to be applied in-camera both during and after shooting
Smart Auto Mode
The Smart Auto mode intelligently selects from 18 predefined shooting modes to match the camera settings to the needs of your intended scene. With Smart Auto, you can completely concentrate on your subject knowing that the camera has optimized all of the settings for you, and you can be confident that you're getting beautiful, memorable images
High-Resolution 2.5" PureColor II LCD
The 2.5" LCD screen provides vivid, high-resolution viewing and is protected by a scratch-resistant anti-reflection coating for easy on-camera viewing. Whether you're shooting, reviewing or showing off your images, the PureColor LCD screen offers a crisp, clear picture to make shooting, playback and using the camera's menu functions especially convenient

The key to success with the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is to know how to use it within its limitations. This camera is best used by the serious amateur as a supplement to a DSLR kit. Of course, its a very nice choice for a rank novice who just needs a good point-and-shoot, but perhaps a bit of overkill for those photogrpahers. The SD780 fills a gap between no camera and the availability of very high quality photographs from a non-photographic event.

This morning, I had breakfast with my mother at a sit-down chain restaurant near home. I would certainly have never entertained the notion of going to the table with either of my DSLRs, but I slipped the SD780 into my shirt pocket and managed to get a very nice photo of me mum from just across the table. I turned off the flash and jacked the ISO up to 800, and no one even noticed I was taking pictures. I tweaked the image when I got home and had a beautiful 12 X 16 inch image. Color, sharpness and noise were all very good to outstanding.

The strength of this camera is its form factor. Its small and sparsely elegant. It reminds me of a Contax T3, but even more demure. The image quality is very good to outstanding. The optical viewfinder is not as useless as some reviews have suggested, but it is a means-of-last-resort option. I have no problem seeing the entire viewfinder while wearing glasses. The flash has a very short working distance; its adequate for its intended purpose (i.e. people just across the table), but I prefer photographing without using it. Shutter lag is virtually non-existant once focus has been achieved. In most lighting scenarios, AF is achieved just shy of instantaneously. The AiAF face detection feature seems to work well, but I'm old school and prefer the center AF sensor as the only active one. Write time is quick. I have not tested the burst rate capability, as my style of photography does not depend on that issue. Noise is well controlled up to ISO 800, I have not gone beyond that setting, and usually do not do so for any of my images on any camera. The LCD screen is useful even in bright sunlight. I turn off most of the options and bells-and-whistles features. That said, I do like the look imparted by the "Positive Film" My Colors selection.

A 1 or 2 GB SD card will get you either 300 or 600 +/- images, respectively. These smaller capacity cards will work with the old-style SD card readers, and I see absolutely no reason to go for a higher capacity SD-HC card for this camera.

Very small and lightweight. Was not prepared for such a small screen (guess that comes with the camera size!). The specs are nice and the pictures are pretty good with some cool features. I was not so excited about the HD video which I thought would be a lot sharper. The zoom on video recording mode is definitely a plus however. The battery has been phenomenal so far. Overall was a little disapointing.

I bought this camera because it was small and had a viewfinder. It is a great camera for traveling and I can easily slip it into my pocket. The picture quality is good, and It has a viewfinder, which makes it useable in bright light conditions that would create glare.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this camera refurbished and chose it after I found that every new camera I could afford - and quite a few over my budget - no longer had view finders. This one does although it's so small one has to really need to use it. But it is there and that was a critical point in my choice.

I love the images this camera takes. I've used Canon professional image stabilization lenses and have had other point and shoots with (and without) the feature. It makes images that were borderline quite usable. Since I rarely take a p&s shot with the camera rock steady, I can't imaging going without IS now.

Another plus was the battery and I'm pleased to report that not only does it have a lithium ion battery but that battery holds up for quite a long time. Which is a good thing because I sometimes go quite awhile between shots.

I like the feel of the camera. It's small but quite well balanced. For anyone familiar with Canon layouts, this one is reasonably intuitive. I've seen reviews that are critical of the flat buttons and I agree it would have been nicer if they'd been raised. But I feel very comfortable using them.

It can be hard to find this camera new now although there are plenty available and I would consider them worth the value. I'd certainly recommend the refurbished model as well. I'm very pleased with it.

Terrific small point and shoot camera. No excuses for not having it with you when you need it. Fits is a pocket nicely. Images are crisp with great color balance and response time is very good. Zoom is OK and what you would expect in a point and shoot.

Only minor caution is that camera is small and wrist strap is NOT adjustable so there is a risk of dropping it. Takes a little getting used to holding onto in some situations.

Bought this camera for my teenage daughter for a school trip to Europe. Her attention to photographic detail is not the best (she had other things on her mind) yet she produced some very nice images. When she stood still and gave it a effort the photos were amazingly good for such a tiny little camera. It won't replace my pro-slrs for me but I wouldn't mind having this little camera with me all the time just in case.
Some images were blurry but I suspect it was more her constant movement rather than IS failure.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Camera (Black):

My main camera is a Canon EOS 50D. I wanted a camera small enough to fit in my pocket when I'm out walking. I also wanted to be more inconspicuous when taking photos in a restaurant (I sometimes write about food) or other places where a large camera would not be possible or convenient.

The SD80 is a great little camera for the price! It is easy to operate and the manual is user friendly.

I am impressed with its ability to create beautiful prints, both color and black and white. It's macro capability is excellent. The SD80 also has the option of using a grid on the monitor for those "rule of third" shots and making sure your horizons are level.

In one of the reviews someone wrote the viewfinder is useless. I have to agree.

The only Con is the zoom. Once you exceed 3x, the quality of the photo drops off considerably which you can see in the monitor. The higher the zoom the great the increase in noise.

The SD80 is not replacing my EOS 50D, it's going to allow me to take more spontaneous photos because of its compact size.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Camera (Black):

I didn't realize how small these Canon ELPHs really were until I saw one in a store, and then I couldn't believe the specs on the card. Just the week before, I had bought a pair of Canon SX200s primarily for shooting 720p Youtube videos, and here was the same CCD and image processor in a cell-phone-sized package. After checking out the reviews online, I ordered one. They say the best camera is the one you have with you, and since this easily and inconspicuously fits in a shirt pocket, I literally take this camera almost anywhere I go. Even when I'm carrying the SX200s and a dSLR in a bag, I still find lots of opportunities when it's more convenient to grab this from my pocket and get a shot within a matter of seconds.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Camera (Black):

This is the third Canon Elf camera I've had, and certainly the best ever. It's small: about the same size as a credit card and about 1/2" thick. Small enough to make you forget that it's in your pocket. The controls are in the same place as the previous generations, which is convenient if you used them before.

Pro: The LCD display is incredibly sharp and includes face-recognition and automatic red-eye removal (you can turn it off if you don't want it). At 12 Megapixels, there's enough information that you can crop a lot of the final image and still expect a good print. The battery is good for a couple of hundred shots, which should be enough for a day of sightseeing though you could use it up faster if you're shooting video a lot. Finally, the video is extremely good, without the "swimmy" effect that some other cameras have.

Cons: The buttons are all flush with the camera body, which might be a problem for people with fat finger, though not a problem for me. The zoom is only 3x - a trade off in a camera this small.

I can honestly not think of a con for this camera, picture quality is amazing, easy to use, good video quality as well. The black is nice and sleek. I had an older version of Canon's powershot, so I decided to stick with it when buying a new one. Never been disappointed by a Canon!

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this product for a very specific use: capturing the amazing scenery during my long trail runs/races. This means, I needed a compact, durable, quick-shooting camera that would perform for shots taken while running down a particularly scenic trail. The camera takes rich, detailed photos and conveys the beauty of my run like I had hoped. While I do have to slow down to almost a full stop to snap a picture, the image stabilization does keep most of the pictures blur-free. The metal case has already survived a few falls from my race-vest chest pouch. The size is perfect for my needs. I'm a petite woman and don't have too much trouble, myself, but I will agree with most reviewers that the buttons are too small for a larger-fingered person. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.
