I chose this camera for situations in which a larger, more sophisticated camera would prove inconvenient to carry. It exceeds my expectations as based upon the advertisements and reviews that I read.
In general, while I value this sort of camera for its small size and low cost, I dislike its emphasis on automatic modes. I prefer the much simpler, and more versatile, manual controls of aperture and speed, or at least, of aperture-priority exposure, along with exposure compensation. I would include the automatic modes in addition to, rather than instead of, such manual modes. However, once I took the trouble to download and master the lengthy manual included on the CD, I found that this camera, while not providing all the manual controls that I desired, had far more capabilities than I had originally expected.
Other reviewers have complained about the battery door. The door, tricky to open, may also look closed upon superficial inspection but actually remain only partially closed. Nevertheless, I do not find a severe problem with the design, which the small camera size dictates. The problem arises, I believe, because of the unexpected two-step procedure required to open and close the door. Once I understood the design, I had no problems operating the door properly. Perhaps Canon could provide more detailed instructions and diagrams.
The other most frequent complaint that I have read concerns the battery life. I also experienced shockingly short battery life, even with several sets of brand new, well-known brand-name rechargeable NiMH batteries. Ultimately, however, I traced the problem to that battery manufacturer. When I switched to Sony rechargeable batteries, the problem vanished.
The camera arrived from the supplier with a smudge on the lens but otherwise appeared prefect cosmetically and functionally. I successfully cleaned the lens with little effort using lens paper and lens cleaning fluid.

i am not a professional consumer nor a prosumer. but although i like the A1100IS in general terms, i still miss some of the features my old A80 has, namely: the manual settings and the tilt screen.
besides that, the Auto function in the A80 let you shoot pictures with subjects moving fast (children, cars, landscape when you're in a car), but the Auto function of the A1100IS does not. the shutter speed seems to not get over 1/60 most of the times.
also, the time required for the flash to recharge is some seconds longer than it should be, maybe because the A1100IS holds only two batteries (against four in the A80).
overall, this is a very good camera but i expected a leap from the A80 and i feel like i stepped down.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Digital Camera (Grey):
Excellent camera! I bought it to replace a dead PowerShot A75 and a one-foot-in-the-grave Panasonic PV-SD4090. I plugged the A1100 into my Ubuntu (10.04) box and F-Spot came right up and happily transferred the pictures onto my hard drive. My one pet peeve is the short battery life, but if you turn off the LCD during shooting your batteries will last a whole lot longer. With the LCD on, I find that I can usually get half a days shooting in before I have to change batteries. NiMh batteries work fine in this camera.
Bottom line: buy this camera. You won't be sorry.

This camera was purchased to take pictures of items being listed for sale on the internet. Closeup photos are very common to showcase intricate detail or products. Clarity and focus is something that is easy to achieve with this camera. It takes clear and bright images with little effort.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Digital Camera (Grey):
This camera performs really well, as would be expected with a Powershot. Canon goes beyond mere megapixel count and produces great images due its superior processing. We have had several PowerShot cameras, going back to a 3 Mp unit that took excellent pictures. The image stabilization is excellent and it efficiently recognizes faces. It also is more slender and compact than it appears in Web images.

We recently went on a trip to Washington DC and I needed a new camera desperately. I consulted with a friend who purchasesd the Powershot and he was very satisfied. I love the clarity of the images and the fact you can take videos- we were able to record the Changing of the Guard at Artlington National Cemetary. The price is exceptional at B&H.Thanks to all for helping us create memories for a lifetime.

I use this camera in my job to take picture of equipment that needs to be repaired.
It is small enough that I carry it in my cargo pants pocket. The picture quailty is excellent when taking pictures close up. Another plus is that it take AA batteries.
Down side it has no sports mode. This would make it easy to stop action.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Digital Camera (Grey):
First of all, I love cameras and I take a LOT of "pictures". I have 2 film SLRs (including a 30 year old Canon A1) that I've thoroughly enjoyed using. Currently, I own two medium-sized Fuji digitals that, while they are not true SLRs, have full manual controls and are great cameras. Since I spend a lot of time on my bike, I wanted an inexpensive, small point-and-shoot that I could carry in a case on my handlebars. I tried one without a viewfinder and quickly realized that was a mistake. I couldn't see a thing in bright sunlight. I bought the Canon A1100 because it is one of the few cameras still available with a viewfinder. I couldn't be happier. The build is solid, color is amazing, resolution and zoom are higher than most at that price, movies are sharp and bright, and it offers some advanced features such as: custom white balance for both stills and movies, ISO 3200, and continuous shooting. Another plus is the included software. With my other cameras, I prefer to use a card reader to pick and choose which photos I copy to my computer. The Canon A1100 uses a newer high capacity SD card that would not work in my old reader. So I connected it via the supplied cable and loaded the software. To my surprise, I discovered PhotoStitch which "stitches" together a sequence of photos. If you manage to keep the camera relatively level on all shots the results are amazing.
There are three things I would change about this model. First, while the viewfinder is functional, it would be nice if it was larger and more accurate. As is, it serves only to give you an approximation of your photo. Still, it's sufficient when it's too bright to see the LCD screen. Secondly, this camera has a spring-loaded ring surrounding the shutter button that moves right or left to control the zoom. I prefer a rocker switch. Lastly, it uses two AA batteries (my Fujis have four) so they do drain quicker than I would like. But I am still a fan of AAs because they are readily available and less expensive than the proprietary alternative.
All things considered, this is a great point-and-shoot camera and I look forward to using it for many years.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Digital Camera (Grey):
This camera is a good all-around point and shoot. It's got a large pixel count, and the image quality on the auto and easy modes is pleasing and bright enough even indoors. It has a viewfinder, which is a plus for me (being accustomed to using one rather than the LCD). One of the things I like the best about the A1100 for general purpose photography is that it uses standard AA batteries rather than a rechargeable cell. That way, you can carry the camera anywhere, along with some regular batteries available at your local convenience store or supermarket, and never worry about charging up the device or running out of power with no AC access.

I did return this for an exchange, as it is a basic point and shoot, without manual controls. I will probably purchase a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ35. For the money, it is a great camera, but I was looking for something more for being creative.
There was nothing wrong with this camera and it would be a good fit with someone who just wants to get a pocket camera that performs very well.

I used this product on our family trip to Washington D.C. and the photos I got from the trip were amazing. The monuments were pictured beautifully, and were far better when compared to another camera we had along, an Olympus model.
I love the face detection feature, and it came in very handy when take family pictures.
The only thing that I don't like about this camera is that it has a very short battery life.
I had to change the batteries at least twice a day.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Digital Camera (Grey):
Even though I shoot a lot of transparency film, and also use a DSLR, this is great when I don't want to lug around a larger camera just to possibly take a few casual snapshots. Although it doesn't have the image quality of a DSLR, and shouldn't be expected to, it's fine for casual snapshot photos. The tungsten balance works well, and I have good results with custom color balance as well. This is one of the few point and shoot digital cameras that still has an optical viewfinder. I use that most of the time, and it is especially good for sunny days when the LCD screen on most cameras is washed out. The use of AA cells is great; you won't get in the trap of having a special battery go dead, and then have to wait to charge it, or worse yet not have a charger with you. All you have to do with this camera is put in another set of AA cells, which are readily available. I keep NiMH cells in the camera and, for emergency backup, a couple of lithium cells. The camera, along with the lithium cells and extra SD cards, fits well in a Tamrac 3585 case.

I purchased this camera because I needed something easy to use, inexpensive, small and versatile. This camera fulfills all of my needs.
I often need to shoot movies of horses and also take still shots of the horses. I am often out in the field where large pieces of equipment are cumbersome. This little camera, at a very affordable price, does it all! Best of all, the use of the camera is intuitive. It is not necessary to spend hours reading the manual in order to start using the camera. The ease of use of this camera is outstanding and it does not sacrifice image quality or movie quality. I highly recommend this camera!
