Great point-and-shoot. Bought the A480 as a gift. Have a 3-year old Canon which I'm very happy with. Nonetheless, I compared Canon's current offerings with all the other brands and decided that this was the best for the money, and for the recipient.
Am amazed at all the changes Canon has made in little things, which shows they're really listening to their customers (even down to clearer markings for battery direction, + and -).
The A480 takes great digital photos, has very-easy-to-understand and easily-accessed functions and buttons, is very lightweight for its size, good for handbag or pocket, has an excellent configuration that would be comfortable for any hand, male or female, even a child, is great looking, and the price for the feature set is excellent.
Have already delivered the gift so it could be used over the holidays, and lots of pix were taken. Everyone present was very impressed with the look of it (this one is red, but the blue is gorgeous, too), the handling of it, and the feature set. The zoom is amazing (better than on my older model, with a higher #). Excellent in low light.
Only negative is, I do wish Canon had included at least a 1gb memory card instead of the 128mb it has so that it could be used more fully out of the box .. so suggest buying a card along with it, especially if you're going to use the video function much.
As with all AA battery-powered cameras, I'd recommend rechargeables.
Overall, I heartily recommend it.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A480 Digital Camera (Red):
My daughter earned the money to buy this camera as her first camera. She is only in elementary school so I am putting in a review for her. (The photographer description below is about her). She uses it to take snapshots and short movies around the home and of her friends. She has done some funny short movies.
I have been very impressed with the resolution of the movies. The pictures are also very good. I think the large viewing screen is a big plus. I found the buttons and menus fairly easy to figure out and use.
Two things that I would change are: 1) Make the playback audio on the camera able to be louder than it is now; 2) Give the camera a good, long lasting, rechargeable battery. Even if the battery wasn't real long lasting, it would be very helpful to allow the battery be rechargeable with an accompanying recharging cord. You can get do this on your own, though, by buying rechargeable AA batteries and a recharger kit. I don't know which would end up costing more -- adding a rechargeable battery feature to the battery or buying your own rechargeable batteries and recharger. At least with the latter option, you have it available for other toys or gadgets.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A480 Digital Camera (Red):
This is an excellent entry-level P&S, we bought it for our daughter's 4th birthday and we are very pleased with the quality of the pictures(i.e. Canon quality). The body is bulkier than most P&Ss, but it suits us fine as it is easier for her clumsy little fingers. The camera is well built and sturdy, so far it has withstood its young owner's carelessness.
Pros:
1. excellent image quality,
2. great price,
3. easy to use.
Cons:
1. the flash has only 2 modes, auto on or off, would have liked to have an always-on option,
2. flash recharges very slowly,
3. shutter lag is slightly longer than more expensive Canon P&S's,
4. uses 2 AA batteries, somewhat inconvenient as we have to carry spares.
Overall good value for the price.

As a cheaper camera this is great. Optical zoom is nice and most functions are intuitive-as they usually are with Canon cameras.

Bought this for my 10 yr-old daughter and she loves it! Gets great images, and it's very easy to use! I was concerned that the camera was going to be difficult to use beacause it didn't have the "easy dial" on the top of the camera - but my 10 yr-old knew exactly what to do through the menu with absolutely no problems. Images are great, it's easy to use, and even the video is nice! And for the price, you just can't beat it!

Easy to use and takes great pictures. It was a gift for my tween-aged daughter. Easy for her to figure out all the needed functionality without instruction or the manual.

Gave to my 13 year old daughter as a gift. Worked great right out of the box with little "manual reading."

I bought this camera for our office of Engineers to use when they go out on site visits. It seems to be holding up to all the abuse and amateur photographers very well. No complaints yet. I also like the red color, that way no one misplaces it like the old camera that went MIA. I just wish that Canon made a point & shoot camera under $200 that had a rechargeable battery.
