Comments about Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder:
I love movies from the 1930s and 1940s, and the main reason for ordering this product was to record those movies on DVD disks. Since I have been buying from B&H for over 40 years, having been a photographer in New York City, I knew I could [...]. I was not disappointed. The unit[...]and it was a breeze to set it up. It has a very compact design and the instructions booklet is clearly written. The quality of the recordings is superior to anything I have recorded on VHS tapes. I would recommend this product to relatives or friends.

Comments about Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder:
Fantastic! Does everything I wanted it for. I bought this to copy all of my old VHS and 8MM tapes of my kids. It's a whole family history thing I'm trying to preserve. Super easy to set up and use. I patched it between my VHS/DVD combo player and hi-def set in the bedroom and I'm connecting my 8MM digital Sony camera to the fire wire port on the front. The Sony camera is backward compatible with all of my old 8MM tapes from the 1990s and also gives me digital quality on the tapes I've recorded with it. All seamless through the fire wire connection. I've recorded about 20 DVDs in the past week from VHS, 8MM and digital 8MM and they all play in every DVD player I've tried them in. Can't beat this recorder for the price and ease of use. Highly recommended.

Comments about Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder:
I purchased the Toshiba DR420 DVD recorder to replace a SONY RDR-VX515 combination DVD-VHS recorder that stopped working recently.
The DR420 allowed me to resume recording movies and other programming as soon as the unit arrived. The programming required a brief time to adapt to after being acustomed to the SONY user interface. After a couple of days I have confidence of being able to program a recording and have it come off reliably with a quality recording.
The only drawback I've found is that where the SONY had a very easy to use method for editing commercials out of recorded material editing on the Toshiba looks as though it will take an investment of significantly more learning and practise time to be able to accomplish similar editing capabilities as the SONY.
However for simple video recording I've been satisfied with the DR420's capabilities (not to mention the attractive price at B&H).

This was a very good buy. Had it working five minutes after I opened the box. It was easy to set up and the features, like the timer recording and settings, are very easy to learn and use. Overall, I'm pleased with the product.

Comments about Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder:
I make a DVD each week for distribution to friends and family members. I use five of these machines in tandem to make the copies. The deck is reliable all the time, making an excellent copy in all available modes. I can't distinguish the copy from the master. The deck is easy to operate with the remote. Finalization of discs and chapter writing is done quickly, faster than other brand decks I have. If I had to criticize anything it would be that you must use the remote to change the speed (or mode) of recording. I highly recommend this DVD recorder.

Comments about Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder:
The good news: The Toshiba DR420 does make DVD's.
The bad news: I bought this recorder to transfer some old VHS movies to DVD. For a lot of the VHS, the recorder refuses to copy the tape, claiming it is copyrighted. I bought the VHS tape and wanted it on DVD for two reasons: 1) so when my VHS player finally dies, I can still watch it and 2) a hundred DVD's can be stored on a shelf in a single binder, where as 100 VHS tapes would take up an entire bookcase.
Bottom Line: I can't backup a lot of the videos I wanted to.
Note: Copyright allows "Fair use" copying. Since I'm not selling or giving away copies of the movies, and I throw the VHS out after copying it, what I'm doing would be considered Fair Use. I only want to be able to watch the movies I purchased.
