DVD recorders have dropped in price from their one time prices of $1000. But much has changed with them as well. Same brands do not have a built in fan, thus the recorders burn out really fast. The Toshiba line has a built in fan which will ensure the longevity of the unit, will have far less malfunctions and delivers on it being a quality machine.
Users however, do not realize that standalone DVD recorders do not like (and never did) the higher speed blank discs. 16X discs are not going to be reliable period. Those are designed for computer burning. Standalone DVD recorders prefer slower speeds and perform /copy and record well.
2X , 4X and 8X are the best discs when chosing your blank media, and Verbatim is the very best out there. The Recorder is EZ is use and set up.
If you have cable or SAT , use the S-Video in for best images to be recorded. If you need a recorder with a Digital Tuner, then there are other models that will bring in HD signals to your TV.

I set up my brand new unit, straight out of the box, and was totally unable to get the DVD tray to open. Hours spent on the web trying to find a fix, and discovered that others have had the same problem.
The unit comes with a sheet listing three telephone numbers to call for tech support and customer service-- none of them connects with a human being. Oh, and Toshiba's solution? I have to pay to ship the unit back to them. Outrageous. Last time I purchase a product from them.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
I have hundreds of home movies on VHS tapes that need converted to DVD and love my new Toshiba DVR620 recorder. It has made converting those tapes to DVD very easy and flawless. I'm still learning everything that this unit can do in the manual. But a straight transfer is very easy. I would like to edit in and out points to remove sections that I don't need and I think that the unit will do that but I still have to read the manual a learn that feature. Very Very happy with the quality of the unit.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
The player has a somewhat complex remote and interface with the TV but once you get a pattern down for the basic operation it is not bad. The quality is good. It is easy to dub other DVDs as from a camcorder and from VHS which is the major reason for the purchase.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
It is very cleaver to put a VHS and DVD in the same unit. Not only does this save space but I will also be able to copy old VHS to the DVD's and continue their life long after VHS completly dies. Be careful other products may play both but not all products and copy back or forth.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
We purchased 3 units, to be used in the classrooms. Randolph-Macon College has a decent video collection; some documentaries are in VHS format ONLY ... a problem shared by many colleges. Some manufacturers have stopped making DVD/VCR combos, but I think Toshiba is doing the right thing to keep the model. The upscaling function works well. The VHS videos look quite good on a HD monitor.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
I am using this machine to copy my old home movies from VHS to DVD. My fiance also has quite a few home movies to transfer over to DVD. I am even thinking about starting a little side business offering to copy other people's tapes over to DVD for a economical price. It's a very simple process, but I was a little slow on the uptake and was hitting the wrong record button, but that was all me, not the instructions fault! It's pretty cool to be able to watch my home movie on the DVD player and on my computer too. This will preserve the precious memories as my tapes were pretty old and starting to deteriorate. It's also made me want to get a Digital cam-corder to shoot more home videos and then transfer those to DVD as well! I still need to experiment with different recordable DVD formats, but for now it is working flawlessly.

works well for recording DVD's between VHS and off an input source. Easy, intuitive, and does what it is supposed to. Very recommended. Remote is slightly confusing, but no big deal.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
Bught this to copy old VCR's to DVD's. It does the job quite well. Also works fine as a DVD player (NOT blu-ray), or just to play old VHS tapes. My only complaint is that the instructions in the manual are a little confusing. I did better by ignoring them and doing what makes sense. After figuring out how to copy VHS to DVD, I re-read the directions, and they are actually accurate, though they include a lot of extra steps - mostly setting parameters that you would rarely, if ever, need to change.
Design is fine. A bit large by current standards, byut that's probably to be expected in anything that includes VHS.
Overall a good product.

This product will be used to make quick DVDs from old VHS training tapes. I wanted a system that was very easy for non-technical people to use and produced good results. So far, it looks great. You can get as complicated as you want, making a multi-cut DVD with individual titles; or just a simple one-off. The manual is lengthy and reasonably well written. However, like so many instruction sets, by over-simplifying it makes an easy job more complicated. So far, so good.

Just needed a basic VHS to DVD or reverse transfer unit. This was it. Hey it even upconverts and has HDMI port. So the hookup is easy easy !!! Does what it needs to for the price paid. If it survives all my tape VHS to DVD Transfer that will be perfect. The manual is easy for even a novice user.

Very easy to set up and use. Agree that number of possible applications options makes instruction book look a bit dense at first but it is totally clear. I have dubbed both Mini-DV tapes and old fashioned VHS Compact C tapes with no problems.

This recorder allows me to archive all of my videotapes collected over the previous 25 years to DVDs. It also provides double duty to be a videotape player for those videotapes that make it into the house. It is well built and not a piece of flimsy plastic like so many other HT devices.
