DVD recorders have dropped in price from their one time prices of $1000. But much has changed with them as well. Same brands do not have a built in fan, thus the recorders burn out really fast. The Toshiba line has a built in fan which will ensure the longevity of the unit, will have far less malfunctions and delivers on it being a quality machine.
Users however, do not realize that standalone DVD recorders do not like (and never did) the higher speed blank discs. 16X discs are not going to be reliable period. Those are designed for computer burning. Standalone DVD recorders prefer slower speeds and perform /copy and record well.
2X , 4X and 8X are the best discs when chosing your blank media, and Verbatim is the very best out there. The Recorder is EZ is use and set up.
If you have cable or SAT , use the S-Video in for best images to be recorded. If you need a recorder with a Digital Tuner, then there are other models that will bring in HD signals to your TV.

Bought this unit 11-15-09. It was complicated but did a good job. Until about one month after the labor warranty ran out. The VCR quit working and proceeded to turn the unit off every time I tried to play or record. [...] . I hope this doesn't happen to you but if it does you have been warned.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
This product will be used to make quick DVDs from old VHS training tapes. I wanted a system that was very easy for non-technical people to use and produced good results. So far, it looks great. You can get as complicated as you want, making a multi-cut DVD with individual titles; or just a simple one-off. The manual is lengthy and reasonably well written. However, like so many instruction sets, by over-simplifying it makes an easy job more complicated. So far, so good.

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
Just needed a basic VHS to DVD or reverse transfer unit. This was it. Hey it even upconverts and has HDMI port. So the hookup is easy easy !!! Does what it needs to for the price paid. If it survives all my tape VHS to DVD Transfer that will be perfect. The manual is easy for even a novice user.

Very easy to set up and use. Agree that number of possible applications options makes instruction book look a bit dense at first but it is totally clear. I have dubbed both Mini-DV tapes and old fashioned VHS Compact C tapes with no problems.

This recorder allows me to archive all of my videotapes collected over the previous 25 years to DVDs. It also provides double duty to be a videotape player for those videotapes that make it into the house. It is well built and not a piece of flimsy plastic like so many other HT devices.

Makes very good copies from VCR tapes to DVD's, instructions are a little difficult to follow, but once you get the hang of it, its easy to do. As always B&H is the fastest and easiest way to shop. [...]

Comments about Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
I have been copying segments of tapes made by my Sony handycams (one analog and one digital on tape)and the results provide very good quality images. So far, I have made 15 discs and the machine has worked flawlessly. I had a frustrating experience with a competitors model two years ago, so I was hesitant to buy any DVD recorder after that experience and reading all the troubles people are reporting eith other brands. But, based on the reviews posted here, I decided to take a chance on this mfr and model.
First, the unit allows pausing during the recording so I can go forwards and backwards on the handycam to do scene sequencing. My earlier adventure required shutting the DVD recorder off in order to do that, with the resultant video and audio flutter and broken images on re-start of the recording. This one does it seamlessly!!!
I also copy TV programs from my DVR's hard disk drive onto DVDs so that I have a permanent copy. I do this manually. I set up the DVD recorder, select the DVR show, hit Record and Play, and the copying starts. I leave the room while it copies and use a kitchen timer to know when to go back and turn off the DVD unit.
I will say that the unit has alot of features I will never use (like timer recording) and the instruction manual naturally has to cover everything, so it is an imposing document. BUT..it has to be one of the most understandable and logical manuals ever produced. They really put an effort into step by step procedures for each operation. Applicable steps are shown next to a picture of the remote on which the applicable keys are darkened. Very nice idea for us normal humans. As others have mentioned, read through the manual to get a feel for its organization, note the glossary and index, and then begin to enter language, date, and other preferences per the sequence in the manual. I was impressed that Toshiba listed EXACTLY what discs to get. They have several manufacturer's and speed listed, which I followed. I was not sure about the differences between R factors. Mystery about plus, minus, and RW is clarified on a nice table for the user. I used the big online store to order the specific brand discs. So far, I think this is an excellent choice in DVD recorders for my purpose.
I did make my own set of steps/choices for formatting and recording and finalizing. That way I do not have to have the manual at hand.

We are transferring our old home VHS videos over to DVD and needed an easy, inexpensive way to do it. This was just the ticket! I just pop a VHS tape in,put a DVD in,hit dub and walk away. Two hours later it is finished.

I bought the product to use with some old VCR tapes and possibly burn them to DVDs. The UP conversion for HD TVs is okay...just not the same picture if you've gotten used to blu ray. Works well and is easy to use. Good for old DVDs/VCRs but not for everyday use with HD TVs.
