Comments about iLuv i1166 9" Portable Multimedia DVD Player:
Pros: Defect showed up within the return window. Other purchasers mentioned poor support and design problems. Large screen. old iDevice compatibility
Cons: Freezes. Bad Manual. No AV output as some sites list (it's a dual headphone jack). Not SDHD compatible, old DiVx standard, incompatible with current iDevice firmware.
I bought this as a gift for the dual DVD and iPod functionality. Upon second use, I got a call from the person I gave it to saying it froze up at the menu screen. I hopped online and found the troubleshooting. I had her check to see if the hold button was on but it wasn't and the remote wasn't working either. The poorly written and organized manual only said to power off the unit if the controls became non-responsive. It took about 30 seconds to start up or shut down. After trying multiple things that some manufacturers do like having her hold down the power button until it reset none worked. Only power cycling (turning it off and then on) got any response from the device, and each power cycling took at least a minute. She was tired and frustrated and I started looking up the return policy for things that no longer had the packaging. I felt horrible that I'd given a gift that was a dud, and instead of brining joy, it brought frustration and grief.
After finding I was out of luck, and had given a shiny brick. She called up about 30 minutes later and said she tried it one more time before putting it back in the bag and it worked. While I was researching the device I came across multiple reviews about unhelpful support and other deficiencies such as a 2GD SD card limit and outdated Divx compatibility, meaning many people couldn't play current Divx movies. This device had advertised winning awards, but apparently the awards were handed out for "best specifications sheet" not actual functioning of the device.
Given that this a pretty simple consumer electronic device freezing is unacceptable. I wished I had checked Retrevo before ordering it as there is a warning about it. There are better and more reliable portable DVD players out there. Hopefully, I'll be able to return it and not have to put up with flakey technology.

I use this product mainly on airline flights as a means to pass the time, especially to Europe. It works great, but I also carry an external battery to keep the device playing. Great picture and features. The price is right.

Comments about iLuv i1166 9" Portable Multimedia DVD Player:
I just purchased so I would be able to watch DivX DVD's or ipod videos when I am traveling across country several times a month. Guess what cannot register for DivX code no good. iLuv says it's a version issue, but I have an older Toshiba DVD portable player that had no issues with registering. iLuv is very slow at responding to "Express Customer Support" e-mails and insist it's a version issue, even though DivX denies and my Toshiba proves it. Beware before purchasing, sound without head phones not the greatest even after modifying set up.
