I opened up the boxes, put in the batteries, placed one on my 40D, and the other mounted under a 580II. You need to turn on the tt5 FIRST (I used channel C1), then turn on the connected gear. Extend each antenna out of it's closed mode. I put the flash in my bedroom which is separated by a thick wall, so it fired out the door at the wall in the hall. I went into my living room, still able to see the wall in the hall and fired the 40D on High Speed FPS. The 580 fired EVERY SINGLE TIME. It is truly awesome. I tried hiding it all over the place, as far as I could behind things to purposely obstruct line of sight. It just fires every single time right out of the box. The literature that came with this version had a list of bug fixes noted on it which could have accounted for the other issues mentioned in the other reviews. On my own I made two mistakes. One was that I didn't realize that the order in which you turn on the gear mattered, but it does. "Flex First" (which is how I remember it), then everything else. Two was that I forgot to extend the tt5's antenna on my camera and got intermittent results, but as soon as I extended it it fired every time. I'm not sure who else will use the tt5 as a transmitter, but it is pretty much obvious now to just flip it up. The mini doesn't have an antenna, so it's an extra step. I plan to do a distance test using the tt5 as a transmitter so I will edit this post soon.[...]

I really, really wanted to like the new Pocket Wizards, because I have used the PW PlusII for several years, and I thought I researched these new units extensively enough. I chose these units because of their lower profile design when trying to trigger off camera flashes while also using an on camera flash (instead of strapping a PW on top of my on camera flash). The appearance of the design is great, especially the Mini. I tested them ahead of a shoot, but testing doesn't completely prepair you for all the circumstances of real under pressure use. I used a pair of Mini/Flex units at a wedding with both eTTL off camera flashes and other AC powered units (which of course is one of this products' main target markets i.e. wedding/candid events). I ultimated chose to return both the Mini and the Flex, and B&H gave me a very prompt refund.

Here are some my biggest frustrations with the Mini & the Flex: 1. Recalibration way too often --When the camera or flash goes to sleep, you have do another calibration shot (which means you need to calibrate every few minutes at a wedding, and frequently miss important shots). So even if you just use the mini or Flex as a triggering device (with flash attached) for use with conventional PocketWizards, your on camera flash won't fire frequently, because the unit needs to so frequently recalibrate. 2. Off camera eTTL flashes often won't fire at all, or won't fire accurately --- The frequency that these units use is heavily effected by the same frequency of the RF "noise" produced by the popular Canon flashes (yes I've read the new version of the 430 is less prone to this RF). Because of this the recieving flash with FlexTT5 attached is too unpredictable if hand-held and often won't fire, or will fire at full power, because the unit needs to be positioned "just so", and often needs to be rediculously close to work at all.

Unfortuanately the engineers blew it on this product. Fixes/Designs they "should have done": 1. They should have allowed the unit to calibrate only once and not needing to have the calibration continually refreshed (maaaaaybe this will be fixed in a firmware update). 2. They could/should have designed the unit to send out 2 signals simultanously-- one to trigger legacy PocketWizard units, and one on a more reliable frequency for the Canon eTTL units (I don't see this happening without them bring out a newer version)

These units are almost contenders, but because of these and other major design flaws, I'm guessing the vast majority of them will be returned.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

Use it on location and studio photography in combination with the AC3 controller most of the time. Easy to use, no set-up with a Canon camera and flash.
Only negative is that you need to use the shield with a 580X-II when more than 20 ft away.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

I use the Flex TT5 for supplemental light for location outdoor portraits, I typically use reflectors but have started using a flash for less than optinum lighting. I use the units with a 5D (primarily) and 7D with a 580 EXII an 430 EX. I read the intructions and watched the videos and it seemed simple enough. On my first portrait shoot the ETTL failed to work, the flashes fired but apparently not by the metering, I really couldn't see this in the field, should have brought my hoodman loupe to view the LCD. I called the service center and was instructed to turn everything on from top to bottom and reset the TT5, nothing about this to my knowledge in the video or instructions. I did as intructed and the next shoot wnet well. I then practiced with them all worked fine until I switched units, I turned them off and switched from camera to flash and vica versa and no ETTL. Upon switching them back I had to reset the units. It is very possible it is something I am doing but I am dedicating a unit to specific devices (ie. camera or flash) and resetting the unit before each unit. Obviously some more experimenting is on the agenda for me. Pocket Wizarsd by responded to e-,mail quickly and said they should work on either just turn them off before switching. Lot of posting on the distance issue with Canon but it has not been an issue as I use mine relativley close but it is strange they do not address it in design. Unit does include a filter and soft RF shield.

I started by purchasing several of these units more than a year ago and now have five. Looking back, I don't know how I managed without them! Ok, so honestly I do know, I just hate to admit that my photos used to suffer because I struggled with poor lighting control solutions. Well, all of that changed when I upgraded to these units. By coupling them with Justin springclamps, diffuser screens and other simple accessory combinations I now have highly effective, portable and diverse lighting options with precision control. All of which is essential to producing quality on-location pictures. These are so useful, that I've taken two with me while on assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

So far so good with these!! I originally bought 2 of them and I will admit that I was pretty nervous from the other reviews I had read about problems with range and having to put the nerdy sock on my flash. Well, I didn't have any problems with mine and haven't even needed the sock. After playing around with them for a few days, I turned around and purchased 2 more! Love them! I bought them along with the zone controller and the AlienBees adapter and everything is working great. I love being able to control everything right there from my camera. I was debating between the TT5 and the Radio Poppers and am very happy I went with these! Works awesome!

These units do exactly what they say they do. And when they say it is easy, it is. … I could not believe how easy it was to set up and use these tools. …

I wanted high speed sync for shooting wide open in the desert. It does that.
I wanted to put the flash units behind things, out of the line of sight. It does that.
I wanted to take my handheld flash unit off its cable, for a little more separation. It does that.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

Works great with my Canon 580EX II but I strongly recomend using a power pack like the Canon CP-E4 or the new Bolt power pack or else the recycling time it's not fast enough to keep consistent output.
About the RF interference, that hasn't been a problem for me, I just use the FexTT5 as suggested in the pocketwizard website and thats ok so far.
And also update your device to avoid problems.
Forgot to say, be carefull with the shoe mount I broke it the first time I used it :( luckily I could fix it with super glue.

I was using the multi max units before I finally decided to move to the flex units. I was particularly interested in the high speed sync when shooting outside with speedlites and it works awesome. I also feel when using the speedlites as a slave that it is more reliable connected at the hot shoe rather than the PC connector. Definitely worth the money.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

Used together with a TT1 and AC3 controller to trigger three 580exII speedlights the system works pretty well. This setup allows me to manually control light output from the top of my camera which is nice. I don't make use of the actual TTL feature (although strobes have to be set on TTL mode to use the AC3 in manual control) but I'm sure it works well too. I've used PW Plus IIs and really liked the reliability. Flex system seems less reliable when using as described above (misses about 1 in 20) but rock solid when flashes are set to full manual mode but YMMV.

Overall, fantastic product and definitely worth the money.

I have been using this system for a couple of years. To have complete control of my light system in 3 distinct groups from the top of my 50D is perfection. The TT5 are simple to use as the lights mount directly without having separate cords. I have just added the 3rd TT5 to my setup to control the background lighting. It comes with the sheilded sock to place on the light to allow you to move the control of the lights large distances from the camera.

Comments about PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System:

I recently purchased two Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 to use with my Canon speedlite 430II. The Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 are working well, but I recommended the user to make sure they read the instruction carefully before using them for the first time. The Flex TT5 didn't work out of the box, but not the fault of the product, but I needed to download the lastest firmware as suggested by user's manual, thereafter, I had no problem using the product. Overall, I like the Flex TT5, and will purchase another one in the future. One thing I like to see improve is the locking mechanism. Rather than being plastic, perhaps it can be made more robust, because I am afraid of possible breakage of the locking mechanism.

My friend has been using this product for almost two years. He finally convinced me to get one. Take the time to research flash units for the Flex5. If you are a Canon user use caution with the 580EXII. I returned the 580EXII due to the large number of reviewers with defective units plus noise issues. This product ships with a sock to help with interference but it did not solve the problem for me. Search Pocket Wizard's website for 580EXII and you'll find alternate solutions if you already own the 580 (like a $75 modification). I am using two Flex5s with two 480EXII flashes and a LED light. Ultimately, I will purchase one more flash and Flex5 as soon as Canon launches a replacement to the 580EXII.

I have used radio triggers before but these are far away the most amazing I have used. Now, at first I wasn't 100% impressed then I remembered that there is a little antenna that needs to be raised. Once I did that they worked flawless! Range is more than I can imagine using. The build, solid!
