The Profoto D1 Air 500 w/s Monolight is a significant refinement of the ComPact monolight series from the company which having become synonymous with professional strobe lighting, is now celebrating its 40th anniversary.
This D1 Air 500 w/s 2-Light Studio Kit includes 2 D1 Air 500 monolights, 2-D1 Small White Umbrellas, 2-D1 Light Stands, 1-D1 Studio Kit Case and a Profoto Air Remote.
No stone has been left unturned in the provision of tech and convenience features that seem to derive from professional photographers' wish lists. The sleek matte-black, high-impact polycarbonate finish encases strobe design that goes beyond the highly visible LED readout and is digital from the ground up. The 7 stop power range breaks down to 1/10 stop increments providing flexibility, precision and consistency, made possible by dual mode SMPS capacitor charging.
A new built-in 77 degree reflector (5.12" diameter) maximizes case space and is ideal for umbrella and softbox use. Features that we've come to expect from Profoto over the years: short flash duration, rapid recycling, a bright 300W modeling lamp and heavy-duty cabling are all on-board.
New Profoto Air System technology replaces the sync cord, allowing the head to be remotely triggered from as much as 300 meters (1000 feet) away using a Profoto Air Remote (included with kit) or Air Sync transceiver (sold separately). The Air Sync provides wireless triggering (8 channels) via hot shoe or mini plug, while the Air Remote provides wireless triggering as well as full-function head control over 8 channels in 6 distinct groups. Additionally, the D1 Air's syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's Air USB and Studio Air systems.
Modeling lamp operation is user-selectable: On/Off/Proportional and Free (manual). There is also a selectable flash confirmation (dimming) feature in addition to an audible, fully-recycled tone. The D1 is compatible with the full line of widely-acclaimed Profoto light-shaping tools. Finally, the self-sensing multi-voltage circuitry allows you to take the D1 anywhere in the world.
Note:D1 Air models require use of a Profoto Air remote or Profoto Air Sync for triggering the strobe from the camera

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
I use the lights for portrait work and they are compact, light and easy to learn. The air system has worked flawlessly and is better than PW because you can adjust the power of the lights from your camera. I have heard people complain that you cannot use the air system with Sekonic meters. This is not true. Attach the air transceiver to the meter with a short sync cable and set the meter to sync cable mode and away you go. Very happy with this purchase so far.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
Awesome lighting system! I am aphotography student at Academy of Art University taking a lighting class. The quality build is great. Origionally I purchased an "more affordable" system, not happy at all. Using the D1 air monolights is a pleasure, solidly built, consistant light temperature, rapid recycle time and seven full stop range in 1/10 increments, just what I needed. The only improvement I can think of is to create a three light kit with either a 22 inch beauty dish or a medium soft box included. I've already ordered a third D1 air and soon to purchase the beauty dish.Profoto is a bit pricey, but you absolutely get what you pay for.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
Okay, so the stands and the umbrellas are likely to not get used very much...but to get 2 500WS lights and the remote for the price is a pretty good deal as it saves about $500 over the price of buying them individually. The case is very well constructed. The stands are 'ok' at best. The lights...well the lights are Profoto. 'nuff said. :)

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
I'm a professional photographer and have used a wide variety of strobes over the years. For flexible, hassle free location shoots, these are strobes are the best I've used.
They are light and fast to set up. The digital transmitter makes adjustments a breeze. I can change the entire look without an assistant. So this purchase has resulted in producing better quality work while saving me time and money.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
After owning and using monolights from Alien Bee and Elinchrom, I am glad I finally stepped up to the Profotos. They are easier to use than anything else I have tried, are amazingly consistent and rugged. I am using the Elinchrom to Profoto adapter to use my Elinchrom mods, and find the setup easier to use than using those light modifiers on my old Elie gear! Yes, they are expensive, but in every way they show you what you are getting for the money spent. If you are in it for the long haul, save yourself some money and start here, rather than working through other setups and ending up here. Only knock is the one mentioned elsewhere, namely that the stands are a touch light and flimsy compared to the rest of the kit. If there were half stars I'd take a half star away for that, but the rest of the kit deserves a full 5 stars.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
Awesome mono blocs. I've been researching lights for while now and finally settled on the D1 system. I was worried they would not be as beefy as other Profoto lights, but that is not the case. The range of power is terrific. Also, the ability to use the signature Profoto glass domes was a surprising find.
One negative was the power cord. When I received the lights it was bound like a computer cable and now is permanently kinked. Not what I expected from Profoto. If it gets to be too annoying I'll just have to replace it.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
I bought this kit for a company that needed someone basically to build a full-functional studio to shoot product in and it hasn't failed me yet. It is a really great kit, and being that I didn't need the most power imaginable (I'm shooting product) it was awesome. Plus, the price was great considering how much strobes can be. I have seen other reviews state the stands aren't good, but honestly I've been using C-Stands so I can't say anything on that one.
I only have two complaints.... one not really even being a complaint, just a general opinion.
1.) The cords aren't like the other Profoto cords I have seen...they have a shinier coding to them and they are kinda of stiff making it hard to roll up the cords to pack them away NEATLY because of all the kinks that can't seem to get out of there.
2.) I'm not a fan of the umbrellas that they put in the kit. Granted I like slightly bigger soft/silver umbrellas better than a small white umbrella... but that is just personal opinion.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
Excellent product!, the quality of the light it´s awesome due to the frosted glass and the short flash duration, I use this equipment to do mostly portraits and you can just notice the beauty of the light compared with other strobe light equipments. The remote control of all the features on the monolights works great and saves you lots of trouble. this is a great product yeah the stands are quite flaky but still this is a highly recommendable light kit.

I am a portrait photographer and could not choose this product quick enough when I compared it to other options on the market. The multi-voltage use, innovative design of the heads and power and recycling time were all factors that impressed me.

Comments about Profoto D1 Air 500 W/S 2 Monolight Studio Kit:
I use the kit in studio and on location. The KIT gets 4/5. The lights are fantastic, they get a 5/5. The problem with the kit are the light stands. They are not nearly sturdy enough when extended. [...] (the locking mechanism for one of the legs doesn't actually lock them in place). That said, the kit is a deal. Separately, the items in the kit would cost (at B&H's current prices) about $3,039, WITHOUT the light stands. So if you purchase the kit, do so and purchase separate light stands that will fit in the case. Then use kit stands for simpler tasks, like holding a gobo or reflector of some sort. Lastly, it would be really nice if the case had wheels, but I'll let that slide.
