Comments about JBL LSR2325P 90W 5" Active 2-Way Studio Monitor:
Before buying these i went round all the studio stores in Paris' Pigalle area and listened to everything, and that's quite a lot. I tried speakers costing thousands of euros a piece.
All of the common 'reference' speakers the mags talk about turned out to be either disappointing or unusable IMO. I took my best friend along with me (he's a trained sound engineer with SAE) just to be sure: he agreed with me on all speakers. Some had no mids, some have awful mids, some had no bass, some were dull.
And then we came across a pair of passive PMC. They were great, the best, and reasonably priced but 2,5 times more than these and too big for my needs.
These JBL compared well and were almost as good! We were truly amazed, and pleasantly surprised for they were the last we tried that day and we had given up on ever finding anything decent in the studio monitor market.
I later bought these and have had a smile on my face ever since, they are AWESOME. The bass goes low and if you place them well you get all you should need in a small room. Compared to my friend's JBL 4311 Studio Monitors (11") these do at least as good in the bass department, actually they sound more dynamic & even more bassier, despite their small 5" woofers!
The only thing that would make them better is a 3rd way, these are just 2 way.
If the model above (LSR 2328P) were 3 way then i'd reckon they would be the perfect speakers. They are a tad overpriced though, compared to these 2325P's.
IMO these are by far the best deal on the market when it comes to active speakers.
Actually, if you don't get these, get passives & add your own amp. The difference between the BM15a & BM15, for example, is amazing. The active version is way behind, thanks to car stereo electronics.
The only minor flaw with these speakers is a slight hiss when they are turned on, regardless of the volume or source. It's inherent, and comes with active speakers in general. None of that with a big integrated hi-fi amp, but then again that amp alone would cost more than the speakers.
