As a stills photographer, I know the value and need for a good quality wide angle lens. There are so many situations, especially indoors where it is frustrating to not be able to cover the subjects you're shooting.
I lived with this frustration for the past year with my excellent Sony SR11 HD cam, but time to address that.
Was tempted to get the Canon WD-H37C II 37mm, but then the price for that was thirty D more than this and it was a 3-element design compared to this 4-element one.
You get what you pay for. It is a big piece of glass and probably weighs 1/2 SR11 itself. However, the performance is worth the weight.
This is imprinted with a Carl-Zeiss marking, and the rim has a helpful rubbery grip, which the Canon doesn't have.
Performance wise, I am impressed at the lack of optical distortions and I don't seem to lose any brightness.
I've tested the generics and they just don't cut it, with bad barrel distortions, vignetting and chromatic abberations. You might save some money, but your precious shots are all ruined. If you've a HD camcorder and paid so much for it already, why let a lens spoil it.
My gripe is that I cannot put a filter to the front side, and thus you need to be careful. Overall, I am glad I chose this over the Canon and saving some money in the process for great performance. I'd recommend this even for the Canon guys.

well built, but not so wide
This wide angle adapter will give you around 30% more viewable area. I have buy it for indoor shooting when room are small. I expected to get a wider view with this adapter.
This wide angle adapter will give you around 30% more viewable area. I have buy it for indoor shooting when room are small. I expected to get a wider view with this adapter.
I use it with my Sony HDR-XR500V and there is no significant lost of quality.
It will add some weight to your camcorder, in my case, around 1/3 of the total weight.
When inserted, the flash will be desactivated so you can't really use it for indoor picture. It usefull only for filming.
It is very easy to use. Only have to attach the lens. (this is compatible with 37mm ring and there is one 30mm adapter include.)
Included in the package : The lens, a protection cap for both side, an 30mm adapter and a key to lock the adapter. Finally a little soft case is included

Purchased for my HDR XR550V and loved having it for my trip to Europe. In camera mode you will need to zoom in a bit to remove the rounded edges. If you use extra filters between the camcorder and the WA Converter, you will need a little more zoom. Many comment on the weight but I got used to it and never took it off.

Bought this lens to use while shooting weddings and sports. Have shot two track meets this spring with it and have been able to get closer and see more action. Shot a 100 meter dash and zoomed in from 100m away to get my son coming out of the blocks with no distortion whatsoever. Can't wait to shoot a wedding with it this weekend.
Weight was great, very balanced. Makes camera look more professional than already is. Only con would be not being able to attach a hood to it.

Have used generic wide angle converter lenses and they don't compare. Great quality, full zoom-through, lighting and focus still top notch.

Have this lens attached to a Sony HDR-XR500V. There is no vignetting at all, might be a little bit of wide angle distortion, but not bad, only noticeable extreme closeups. Adds some weight to the camera, but I don't think it throws off the balance too bad. Wish you could attach a filter to the front, but most lenses don't have that ability so no biggie. There weren't any other lenses I looked at that I considered, unless you take the next step up and go into the $300-500 range. Considered that too much for the camera I was putting it on.

This product, of course, widens EVERYTHING. The amount, though, is a very pleasing 40%(guessing); but enough to make a very noticeable difference. This lens isn't the lightest thing in the world and it does attract dust and whatever else is in the air, but what lens doesn't. These are just a few very minor, almost nonexistent cons of the lens. As for the end product of filming with this lens; in the end the quality is fantastic with no drawbacks.

Comments about Sony VCL-HGA07 HD 0.7x Wide Angle Converter Lens:
It is a great addition to a great camera, the HDR-XR520v that I have. Inside a house, the standard lens is all but useless, as you can't get back far enough. This is a necessity for anyone that needs to shoot indoors. I can now get my kids head to foot in my living room, as without it, I could only get head to waist. The 0.6 lenses I tried gave just a bit of distortion on the edges, but this one has none that I can see. Its a solid heavy piece, but is worth the extra bulk. I rarely take it off the camera, as you can zoom through it to the end of the zoom, and only starts to look a tad fuzzy.

Comments about Sony VCL-HGA07 HD 0.7x Wide Angle Converter Lens:
The lens on the Canon HG20 was not wide enough for indoor photographs of active children. This solved the problem. In the past I have tried several brands of converter lens - both wide angle and telephoto and sent many back. I have been satisfied with image quality provided by the Sony products and will continue to purchase them when needed.
I only reduced it to 4 stars because the rear lens cap won't stay in place and I keep adding greasy finger prints to the lens

Purchased this lens to extend our field of view mainly for indoor shots -- specifically to get the entire room in view for Christmas morning. Works great with our Sony HDR-SR7 -- attached easily to the camera, minimal distortion, works well even when zooming. Very pleased with this lens!!

A very good quality and good looking lens, on-par quality with Canon's HD Wide Angle Converter Lens which costs more and ugly looking.
I use it with my Canon HF-100 HD Camcorder and it's virtually ND-0 !!!!
The best thing about the product that it's cheaper than the original Canon WAC lens... and far better looking too, not to mention the relative weightlessness of this lens (as opposed to the heavy Canon WAC)
The only bad thing about this lens is that there is no front thread so I can't use a UV filter (severely needed for camcorders) and/or camera hood.

Purchased this lens for my XR500 and it really helps me get a wider picture with no distortion. I have a poor quality wide angle lens that had lots of fuzz in the picture for special effects but not useful for most of the camera work I do. You should get this for indoor/outdoor shooting. Very nice and highly recommended!

already using this on an xr500 for hd local tv commercials, as well as video depositions. my previous .5 lenses had much softness at edges with this camera...but this sony lens seems matched for the g lens on the xr500. very acceptable and little barrel distortion or blur in normal use. solid construction, larger than the cheap wide angle converters i had. using it on 37mm threads, with a giant matte box and rails, with a beachtek xlr adapter, and a frame for shotgun mic and led micropanel. recommend this adapter.

Comments about Sony VCL-HGA07 HD 0.7x Wide Angle Converter Lens:
This lens adds nice flexibility to my Sony CX-520 camcorder. Screws right on the front. Feels like a quality piece. A bit weighty, but I found that it actually made it easier to handle the CX-520, which itself is pretty light. The cam's menu offers a setting to match the characteristics of this lens. I noticed no quality degradation with the lens. Color, contrast and sharpness remained roughtly the same as with the built-in lens, even in low light. There is a bit of horizon distortion, and a small amount of red flaring if you shoot straight into the sun. I found ways to work around both. I loved having a significantly larger field of view. Last week in the Monterey/Carmel area, shooting coastal scenery, I found myself using it a good bit of the time. In the Monterey Aquarium, it was nice to have a wide field of view when you're close to the tanks. It performed quite well there, even in the lower-light situations. Overall, I'm very glad I bought it. [...]...get this one, not the less-expensive Sony lens.
