The HX1 is finally here!! I had ordered mine the day this camera hit the market and have had the HX1 for a little over a month now. This Camera is amazing!! I also own the DSC-H50 which is very similar to the HX1, and first off, the construction on the HX1 seems more rugged and solid. The layout of the controls compared to H50 are better in my opinion. The HX1's handle has a better feel grip than the H50.
The major changes of the HX1 over the H50 is the Sony "G-Lens" which are used in some high end Sony HD Video Pro-sumer cameras. Yet the important thing about it is the amazing detail of the photos this camera can capture. Very close to DSLR, without the DSLR price. Next, this is Sony's First Point and shoot Camera to imcorporate a CMOS chip which have only been found in DSLR's until now. This means the camera is able to process images faster and with great detail. The EXMOR CMOS chip in the HX1 also alows this camera to take upto 10fps. You can capture Action shots at sporting events like you never thought before. (the minor flaw about using the cameras high speed mode is that it takes several seconds (8-10 sec.)to process the images, however, the images are full resolution and clear images.)
The HX1 has a 20X optical zoom and upto 40X Digital Zoom, great feature to get close to subjects from a distance, and thanks to the SUPER Steady Shot feature, you still get great images vs. blurred. This is great if you like to take photos at the Zoo or of Birds at Distance, I have been able to capture impressive pictures of birds.
The HX1 has a new Feature called "Handheld Twilight Mode" which works wonderfull!! In lowlight and No-Flash, The HX1 takes 6 rapid shots of your subject and proceses them into one shot giving you a clear picture. So if you forget your tri-pod at home, don't wory, This camera can take great still shots in low light and they do not come out blury! This is a great feature if you like to go to museums or any places that don not allow FLASH photography. I Tested this feature by taking photos of a Full Moon and compared to photos taken with a tri-pod and could not tell the difference! I was Amazed.
Macro Shots on the HX1 are sharper and clear vs. the H50's Macro mode, I've taken some amazing shots of flowers with the HX1 and every detail is very clear.
Also New on the HX1 is the ability to record video in Full HD (the HX1 allows you to record in 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 720i or VGA mode) I highly recomend the use of at least an 8GB memory card since recording in HD takes up alot of memory. You can connect the HX1 directly to your TV or HDTV with the supplied cable to view your photos/videos. (an HDMI adaptor is included to conect via HDMI)
Just like the H50, the HX1 has built in editing features to add to your pictures. You can Crop or add blur effects, add monochrome to an area of the photo, there is a Fish Eye effect which recreates your photo as if you had a Fish Eye Lens, and much more. You can view your photos you have taken in a slide show with music directly from the camera or connect the camera to TV. (and for greater detail, view your photos in HD)
One of the Other highlights this Camera Features is the Sweep Panorama Mode. You can Take photos of large landscapes in one shot. You simply point, hold and sweep the camera from left to right, right to left or bottom to up, up to bottom of the area you want to take. The HX1 processes the image as one panorama shot. Before, to do this you would have to take several shots, go home and use software capable of sticthing shots together to do this, now however, Sony has built these capabilities into the HX1 and all you have to do is point hold and sweep.
Overall I have been very impressed with this Camera. The abilities to take near DSLR quality photos (thanks to the new Sony G-Lens)and all new features that are included built in, make this camera stand in league of it's own. Even though other brands have similar features like high Zoom, what really stands out from the HX1 for me has been the picture Quality. Compared to the H50, picture quality once in full zoom (15X on the H50) the quality seems a bit grainy, however on the HX1, the picture quality is still great even at 20X or 40X.
There are a few features that the H50 has, not found in HX1, which include Nightshot (infrared)and remote control, also a lens hood. (the Lens hood that comes with the H50 fits the HX1 perfectly, however, Sony probably didn't include it with the HX1 since you can see the lens hood in the pictures when you have the lens at full wide angle 28mm. The H50 starts at 35mm and is not visible in the pictures. Overall, I higly Recomend this Camera if you are in the market for a high zoom point and shoot. You will not be disapointed. No worries about lugging heavy DSLR gear and lenses, the DSC-HX1 packs in a great lens into this camera and great features and most important, delivering great picture quality.

I have owned both the DSC-H7 and H9 and overall, had been happy with both models. So, when I read the advance notices about the HX1, I wanted to get one and put it through its paces. In particular, I was excited about the panning feature and the rapid fire sports feature.
I took the camera on a ten day trip to Colorado, Utah and Arizona, taking over 800 pictures, so I feel like I gave it a thorough workout. Many of the images that I made were panoramic photos, a feature that worked pretty well. However, on several occassions the image failed to record, instead, giving me a message that I should pan in the direction of the arrow on the LCD screen, which I was doing. That only happened a few times. But, when I tried to pan in a vertical fashion, the camera failed each time. Moreover, ALL of my panoramic images were GROSSLY over exposed.
At full telephoto, all of my images lack contrast. This requires extra manipulation in PhotoShop, which, in most cases, enhances noise.
Rapidfire exposures of five and ten exposures is a great idea and a feature that every soccer mom is going to want. The image acquision works as advertised but it is the slow transfer to the memory stick that is a problem. Perhaps a high speed stick would help here.
I'll wind up my gripes by saying that shooting at ISO speeds over result in lots of noise. This is not acceptable. With the sensor in the HX1 that it has, images should be smooth at least through ISO 800.
OK, enough of that. Here's some stuff that I like about the HX1. In the "green setting", the ability for the camera to automatically shift to the type of scene is great. I shot images of landscapes, people and ultra-closeups. The camera recognized automatically the type of scene being imaged. As with previous models in this lineup, namely the H7 and the H9, the macro function worked flawlessly. Sony has a lock on good macro photography in the point and shoot style cameras.
The build is pretty good, however, I found it to look and feel a little "plasticky", if that's a word.
Two features have been left off this camera that I miss. One is the lack of any provision for a remore release and the other is lack of the ability to add filters.
Overall, the HX1 is a pretty good point and shoot camera. It is easy to carry and has a decent wide angle to telephoto range. Don't expect supurb results with it though.

I took this camera on a vacation to Cabo San Lucas and it was amazing! The automatic funtions are so intuitive and the handheld twillight function is worth it weight in gold. the aperture priority function is also great for taking pictures of flowers, bugs, anything where i need the focus to be in the center. it creates great photos. i did have some trouble with the shutter priority setting when photographing a water fall, but if i had to guess it was most likely operator error. overall it was a great camera.

I use it for everything. I have a full sized Nikon SLR, but it is too heavy and impractical for my everyday needs. I followed its development in magazines and on the internet and bought one as soon as they were available, after having had 2 earlier, similar type sonys.
