An upconverting DVD player improves the look of your existing DVDs. The Toshiba DR570 (Black) does that and it has built-in tuners for OTA (over the air) transmission and cable/satellite and it also burns DVDs.
It can upconvert your old DVDs to 720p ,1080i or 1080p depending on your HDTV's highest resolution. Upconversion doesn't change the DVD at all. It just enhances your viewing experience when you watch a DVD with a player (or player/recorder like the DR570) that can do it. The recording capabilities are what you would expect from a high end VCR (but on DVDs, of course). You can program it to record up to 12 programs in one month at disc capacities of 1 hour (XP), 2 hours (SP), 4 hours (LP), 6 hours (EP) and 8 hours (SLP). As with a VCR, the shorter the recording time the higher the quality the image. The DR570 records on DVD-Video, CD-DA, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, VCD, and SVCD.
It also allows you to view your JPEG photos you've burned to a DVD or CD on your computer or that are on a Kodak Picture CD you can get with your developed film and negatives.
What's more, this multimedia machine can also play and record music in the popular MP3 and WMA formats. And its Dolby Digital two channel recording capability will bring new life to your recordings.

This DVD recorder works very well for recording off-air HDTV shows for repeat or later viewing. I've had a Panasonic HDTV and Blu-ray player for about 2 years and love them both. But I was not able to record HDTV shows off-air (with a UHF antenna) for watching a second time. Since Blu-ray recorders are not yet being sold in the US, I was looking for the next best thing. I think I have found it with the Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder. It has a digital tuner, so receives HDTV. It downconverts that signal to Standard Def NTSC and burns that to a regular DVD. When you play back the DVD, the Toshiba upconverts the signal back to HDTV specs (with close-to-HD-quality) and fills a 50" plasma HDTV very nicely. The playback picture is not quite as good as the HD original, but it's darn close! If you don't do back-and-forth comparison with the true HD, you quickly forget that you are watching a show that was recorded on a DVD, and that's very good. The initial loading of any DVD, even a blank one, takes about 30 seconds, a bit longer than I would like. But once that's done, the recorder is very quick and responsive to your pushing the "record" button. It makes a clean start less than 1 second after you hit "record". Compared to other DVD recorders I've used that may have as much as a 6 second delay after hitting "record", this unit reacts wonderfully fast going into record, and stops or pauses instantly.

I bought mine in June, its now October and the thing is busted. And the warranty is out (only 90days). So, in case you are like me. A professional do it all type video guy (camera, edit) stay away from this model. Besides it being [*], the interface is not all that, pushing a button is slow reaction time, and the worst part I found... that when you leave it plugged in (not on, just plugged in) it emits a very high frequency hum.... so annoying. Going with the Panasonic model - its a little more but you get what you pay for.... Be warned!

So far (one month) I have found the DVD recorder very easy to use. The playback video is very clear and the colors perfect. We are enjoying copying TV shows we would have missed. The price was also very good for this quality product from Toshiba.

Comments about Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder (Black):
Having purchased this product to replace multiple VCRs, the technical switch was difficult. Surprisingly, Toshiba (a weekend tech call) was of little help. The weekend call tech support guy concluded that I had purchased a defective unit. I got further into it myself and solved the problems on my own. That tech rep should have told me how to fine tune the auto clock. Now that the unit is up and running, it is a splendid unit. It would be nice to be able to find out up to 8 upcoming programs like I could on my old converter boxes. At least the very next program. And a "return" button would be nice to go back to the just previous channel. But, it's so nice to have stereo back now that was lost when using converter boxes. This unit a great value, too.

This machine has a respectable feature set that allows for future expansion of your existing gear, if it happens to be old school. The digital I/O configuration allows for connection to the latest A/V equipment with a clean digital signal path, if you avoid using the RCA connectors. So far, so good.

Comments about Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder (Black):
generally works as it should.i use it for the qam tuner for my older tv.digital qam channels sometimes take 2-3 seconds to lock on.not a very fast surfer for sure.also, oddly you have to manually select between analog and qam tuners.it does not mix the channels together in order like most tvs.analog tuner is noticably worse than any vcr i have ever had.lots of dot crawl and soft picture.you might run a splitter so as to feed the analog direct to the tv's tuner if you watch analog/local stations a lot.qam tuner looks great.nice picture.dvd playback good.i run the coax digital jack for my sound to amp and component cables for the picture partly because the tv signal is downconverted to 480 anyway and i only have 1 hdmi jack on the tv.i noticed sound output(from digital coax jack) is a little low.have to crank volume a little higher than other dvd/cd players.another annoyance is when powering up,the dvd drive tries to load a disk with a loud clunk even when no disk present.should have a sensor detecting no disk.that's the bad,all else is good.not much choice when wanting a qam tuner.either pay for digital cable and their converter box,get tivo or other hdd device or fight back and pick up the free digital channels with this.this is the cheapest reasonable quality unit out there.

My DVD Recorder died, and I searched for one to replace it. The Toshiba DR570 is just what I was looking for, and the price was right.
I use it to record tv programs that I cannot watch in real time, and it does the job.
It is more complicated than my old recorder, and it took a little while to learn how to use it, but once I did, it was fine.
There are other things that this recorder can do, but I have no need for them all.
I would recommend this product.

Comments about Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder (Black):
Finalized disks lack thumbnails or running time - they only list date recorded, channel, and mode. Thus, incomplete programs are not readily obvious.
Lack of RF output means you cannot just hook it straight to your old TV and watch it on channel 3. You'll need some kind of video-rf converter (like an old vcr).
