HDMI (ver. 1.3a) x.v.Color/Deep Color Processing
This unit features an HDMI (ver. 1.3a) output with x.v.Color/Deep Color processing, capable of reproducing exceptionally rich, vibrant colors, with smooth, detailed gradation and color banding. HDMI technology enables the player to carry the HD audio and video information through a single cable and achieving the highest quality picture and clearest sound available. In addition, HDMI supports PCM multi-channel audio and Bitstream audio formats.
1080i/1080p P4HD Upconversion
Panasonic's P4HD technology performs IP conversion at the pixel level for the finest details by utilizing a pixel-management-task. This advanced video processing samples over 15 billion pixels per second to create a detailed picture with life-like textures, and 16-level motion detection ensures on-screen movement stays blur-free.
Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD
It's capable of decoding Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD audio signals; Dolby Digital Plus uses less compression than regular Dolby Digital to reproduce fuller and more dynamic sound effects with up to eight discrete channels of surround sound.
DTS-HD High-Resolution and Master Audio Essential
It offers both DTS-HD High-Resolution and Master Audio technologies. DTS-HD Master Audio supports bitrates up to 24.5Mbps, 7.1 discrete channels of 96KHz/24-bit audio, and is ideal for HDMI (ver. 1.3a) cables. DTS-HD High-Resolution Audio also offers 7.1 discrete channels of 96KHz/24-bit audio, but only supports bitrates up to 6Mbps.
7.1-Channel Discrete Audio Output
If you have a 7.1-channel home theater receiver - you're in luck - the DMP-BD80K is capable of decoding HD audio signals through its 7.1-channel analog audio (RCA) output.
UniPhier Technology
This unique Blu-ray player is engineered with UniPhier Advanced Processing technology, capable of decoding Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio signals with high precision accuracy, then outputting the signal in bitstream form (via HDMI output) with no degradation.
Blu-ray Disc Features
A Blu-ray disc offers superb picture quality beyond anything available. With full capability 1080p HD resolution in Blu-ray and up to 40Mbps, encoding 5-10X the capacity of regular DVDs. It also features theater-quality uncompressed audio (supporting 8 channels of Liner PCM), up to 32 streams of audio, interactive capability, seamless menus, integrated games, hi-def bonus and educational features.
Full 1080/24p Cinema Output

Multi-Format Versatility
It offers a full-range of playback capabilities for enjoying movies, music and images. It's compatible with Blu-ray Disc, BD-ROM (BD-Live Profile 2.0/Profile 1 ver. 1.1/Final Standard Profile), BD-MV (BD-RE ver. 3), BD-MV (BD-R ver. 2), DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R DL, DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-VR, AVC-HD (H.264), CD, CD-R/RW, MP3, and JPEG (HD) formats.
VIERA CAST
With VIERA CAST you can access a selection of Internet services such as YouTube, Picasa Web Album, etc., from the Home screen. It requires a broadband Internet connection.
VIERA Link Control
Connect the player to your VIERA flat-panel HDTV via an HDMI cable and the TV channel setting information is automatically downloaded to the unit.
AVC-HD Media Compatibility
Enjoy the ability to play back your HD camcorder MPEG-4 AVC-HD files in full HD resolution. AVC-HD discs encoded with x.v.Color (xvYCC) technology, an international standard for wide color space. It expands the current data range of video by about 1.8 times, resulting in more natural and vivid colors similar to what the human eye can actually see.
Top-Notch Video Processing
It utilizes a 148.5MHz/12-bit video D/A converter that provides high quality 4x over-sampling for 1080i/720p output. Noise-shaping video processing, shifts the noise component to an unused area to further enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. By incorporating these technologies, it realizes super-fine, high-definition images with over 4400 billion colors.
HD Component Video Output
It achieves greater color accuracy and high resolution playback capability when connected via the HD component output to your HD projector, plasma and/or LCD/CRT televisions. It's capable of processing 1080i HD signals through the component video output.
Progressive Scan with 3:2 Pull-Down
This is a progressive scan DVD player, capable of scanning an entire video frame at once; scan-lines commonly associated with interlaced video are drastically reduced. The result is a spectacularly clear image with no motion artifacts (stair-stepping), and details so sharp they seem as if they're etched onto the screen.
Expanding Technology
BD incorporates stringent licensing control, powerful encryption and other content protection. The Blu-ray disc technology offers the ability to copy its data-content to your compatible components. Also, it offers the flexibility to make managed copies across a home network to enjoy music and movies on your PC.
BonusView with Picture-in-Picture (PIP)
This interactive player offers the ability to easily access (during live playback) additional Blu-ray content. Some BD-Video incorporates the PIP function in pre-selected scenes; BonusView enables you to display the secondary video source over the primary video.

24-bit Audio Processing
Its built-in 192KHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter offers exceptional multi-channel audio conversion. By executing an accurate sound-field reproduction and reducing analog noise in the signal path, this unit is capable of reproducing an enveloping audio signal that is unsurpassed.
DivX Home Theater Certified
DivX is video compression software, which enables high quality video to be compressed into very small files then downloaded onto CD-R or CD-RW and played back with very little loss of quality.
Home Theater Friendly

Great player cannot fault it at all. Although blu ray players are slow on startup, this one seems to startup pretty quickly for a blu ray. Picture and sound great.Easy instructions, connected to broadband in seconds. I would recommend to anyone to buy this particular player. Good Value for money as always with the Panasonic. I know a little expensive than other great names but you get what you pay for as you do with all panasonic products.Purchased through B&H, great price. [...]

There are two reasons to get a piece of electronic gear: (1) So you can boast to your friends that you have the latest equipment; (2) So you can use it for its advertised function.

If you're interested in (1), by all means get this player. It claims to be able to play a multitude of media, connect to the Internet, etc. You will never use any of these functions, but it's great to be able to say you have them.

On the other hand, if you want to play DVDs, as we did, you will be out of luck. Our player managed to play one disk before breaking. Panasonic customer support, to their credit, responded to an email in a day, and suggested we try a different cable (we already had). Then they told us to take it to an authorized service center. The nearest is a hole-in-the wall 45 min drive, surprising because we live in a large metropolitan area. After repair, the BD80 played one more disk, then died with the same problem (green screen of death). So there is a reliability problem, and lack of repair support.

The other major problem is the complexity of the remote control and the manual. Let's say you want to turn on subtitles. Good luck trying to find out how to do that in the manual (it's there, but you have to read carefully through 40 pages to find it). Then, you have to operate the remote.

The remote is effectively the only way to operate the player. There are buttons on the player itself, but they are hidden and not marked. The remote has dozens of buttons, almost all of them useless. The things you might want to change, such as turning on subtitles, are concealed in menus three levels deep. For example, subtitles are in the "Display" menu. Not exactly intuitive.

There are 4 buttons on a remote that you use all the time: play, pause, fast forward, and fast reverse. To their credit, Panasonic made the first two prominent. Unfortunately, they also made Stop equally prominent, and same size, shape and row as Play and Pause. Fast forward/reverse are little tiny buttons, marked almost identically to Next/Previous chapter, and, worst, holding them down quickly increases the speed. All this means if you want to replay the last 15 seconds, say, you need to turn on the light to see the tiny buttons and have quick reflexes. There is no automatic display of the time, or fixed skip.

Did I mention it takes so long to power up that HDMI times out before the player connects to the monitor (TV)?

This means even if we do ever get the player to work, operating it for simple DVDs will be a pain. But we'll be telling all our friends we can do Viera casts, DiVx, and 8-track tape cassettes on our fancy new machine.

This blu ray DVD player was rated high on consumer reports which is why I ordered it. As with everything these days though, the services are just as important as the hardware. This player can stream movies from Amazon.com at $2.99 a pop (for most titles) versus a multitude of other players that support unlimited netflix streaming for as low as $8.99 a month ($2 extra for high def streaming and blu ray discs). I felt netflix was a superior deal so I returned this player and bought a netflix compatible model.

Comments about Panasonic DMP-BD80K Blu-ray Disc Player:

The blue ray player was replacing a less than stellar brand that went ca-put.
The features work well and since we have a Panasonic HD tv it is even better.
The price was best around and I checked every online available site.

Comments about Panasonic DMP-BD80K Blu-ray Disc Player:

My wife ordered this for me as a Christmas gift not realizing that Panasonic players do not support streaming Netflix, which is the main reason we wanted a blu-ray player. We read the Consumer Reports ratings and thought this was going to be the best option, but the no-Netflix limitation was a deal-breaker. I have exchanged this one for a Samsung player which DOES stream Netflix and will post a review after it arrives and I have a chance to test it.

We've been fans of HD, and were early adopters of the Sony HD system, now replaced by Blu-Ray. The Blu-Ray certainly delivers. We hooked it up to a plasma TV, and the picture quality is terrific.
