Comments about Ableton Suite 8 - Music Production Suite - Educational Discount:
I am a 3rd year college student who plays music gigs on the side for fun and to occasionally make money. I have been playing the keyboard, drums, and singing since I was very young but have only recently dabbled in recording, mixing, and producing using DAWs. Having used GarageBand for a number of years, I began looking for a solid product with more functionality and editing power and I eventually settled on Ableton after reading many reviews, comparing prices and features, and talking to my musical peers.
Thus far, Ableton has been an excellent investment and I can only rave about how great I find the software to be. More than anything, the program is extremely intuitive and easy to use right out of the box. The software instruments and various effects modules are integrated seamlessly into the workstation interface and routing external AUs (I use a Mac) is quite easy as well. My highest praise is that Ableton allows me to take sound design or composition ideas and translate them into digital reality with minimal interruption to my creative flow, and I cannot laud this sort of functionality enough.
I have almost no complaints except for the relative lack of modularity in the two software synths, Analog and Operator, and although both offer different routing algorithm presets, more flexibility might be preferred by some. I have also heard complaints about frequent freezing and crashing of the the program, although this has only happened to me a few times.
Overall, Ableton is a top of the line program for digital music production and a great investment for anyone interested in expanding their musical horizons.
