Exactly as described, a quick way into the deeper functions and where and when to use them for the EX1. I agree with others, this book should come with the camera when you order it from Sony.

If used along with the DVD the Vortex book is great. It leaves out a lot of the info from the DVD, but is a good reference and stays in my camera bag. Good to have on a shoot.

This is a handy little booklet that should have come with the camera. I confess that I did not purchase this until I'd already owned my EX1R for almost two years, so I'd figured out most of it's features before buying the field guide, but I still found a few useful tips I didn't know. The only reason I didn't give it more stars is because of the price.

This is a nice reference for on-site use. Plasticized pages and a spiral binder make it durable and compact. Has complete expansion of menus and some useful tips. The author has a particular style and his preferred defaults are illustrative but not necessarily applicable. Also this manual was written pre EX1R and does not take into account substantial improvements in design (it contains work arounds for early design flaws). Still a worthwhile purchase.

Got the book just before my EX1r arrived to get a bit of a head start. Found it quite well written and informative, the outcome being that when I received the camera I was familiar enough with its features and potential issues to start using it right away.

Now it is in my camera bag at all times, in case I need to refresh how to do something obscure in a hurry.

The book is much, much more useful than the manual.

Vortex has great videos on using the EX1/3/ This field guide has the meat of the video - all the stuff you'd want to write down - in one place. Throw it in your bag and pull it out when you need it.

Comments about Book: Vortex Media Book: Field Guide for the Sony PMW-EX1 by Doug Jensen:

Jensen's field guide is an invaluable tool - like a well-lit path to photographic excellence, it reveals the most useful features of this camera system in a well-organized manner. Actual viewfinder menus are used and flowcharts of submenus show what to expect. His pre-flight checklist sums up shooting preparations and he gives a one-page summation of his favorite EX1 settings. He points out some features that won't get alot of use and gives pros and cons of various other features. Anything beyond the scope of this guide is mentioned as such, and the user is pointed in the right direction for fruther study. Jensen has worked with all the big networks and well-known cable channels. Clearly, the guy can do AND teach. Buy this !
