I've now had this unit for 18 months and used it about a dozen times. I haven't used it in probably 4 months. When I went to use it today, the hard drive has seemed to have failed. It's not recognizing the drive and wants me to reformat. I reformat and get the same message again. The company wants $[@] to fix it.

We bought this less than a year ago from another dealer (wish I had bought it here) and were initially blown away with it. We loved being able to shoot, plug and play and edit with ease. Then Apple updates iTunes, the OSX, etc. and all heck broke loose as FCP and Macs now don't recognize the files from the drive AT ALL! Focus released a patch but even that doesn't work for everyone and now Focus and Apple don't even care. We are left with a 1200 dollar doorstop, doesn't even deserve one star. Lots of angry users on a variety of forums.

Am using the MRD 100 for a rather long project involving hours at a time of record time. This unit has made both acquisition and editorial a whole lot easier. It's been an upgrade for my old JVC GY5000 that brings it into the 21st century.

Comments about JVC MR-HD100 100GB Portable DTE Recorder - NTSC:
I've only used it on a few shoots so far but I'm already sold. I had shot about 12 tapes for different projects in a couple of days. When I considered the capture time and the increase in tape prices I decided I had to make the switch.
Most people recommend using tape anyways as a backup. If you can afford it, why not. But what I would recommend is actually reading through the users manual and spending a day going around actually using the thing and getting comfortable with it.
I shot a 4 hour performance on the weekend and not having to switch tapes and spend (at least) 4 hours capturing made it so much nicer. I did use the Anton Bauer PowerTap to keep it going that long. That being said I don't have any comments on how it would hold up without that. But it never overheated or acted up.
Only problem is that it no longer comes with the Wifi dongle or any kind of bracket or way to attach it to the camera

Comments about JVC MR-HD100 100GB Portable DTE Recorder - NTSC:
Pros: Been a professional shooter for over 16 years and this is my 1st portable hard-drive. I use a JVC GY100U and fully expected this unit to have complicated menus and that I'd need a few days to learn how to use it. I needed it the day after I received it in the mail and it worked perfectly with my JVC. Transferring data onto the iMac & MOV's into FCP-7 was quick and simple. Unit is 100% compatible with my ProHD/HDV camera.
Cons: As a 1st timer, the users guide is not very user friendly. Could be a lot clearer with instructions. Still having a really hard time finding an affordable way to safely mount the unit on the camera. Focus needs to step up here.

If you are on FCP or looking for a "one and done" approach then this should be fine. If you are like me and need to be able to batch capture footage down the road on the Avid then steer clear. The Avid requires a tape name and we could not figure out how to assign unique tape names for each tape. Focus tech support was not helpful at all.

Comments about JVC MR-HD100 100GB Portable DTE Recorder - NTSC:
I guess Focus kind of feels if you need this product to help your tape only camera capture digital files, you'll buy it and its overpriced attachments as well. They don't even include a belt clip (WHICH THE DESCRIPTION SAYS IT DOES, IT DOESN'T!!!). I had a few workmen at our company fabricate a mount for it for me, instead of dropping hundreds on brackets that don't even provide much attachment for you. This device does allow video playback of clips, but there are no thumbnails like the book promises. ANOTHER downside, you can't update the meta data WITHOUT a wireless network adapter. (ALSO NOT INCLUDED!!!!) So your stuck with "FCP Example" as your default folder unless you choose a diff real. So while this device works ok, it has tons of quirks to drive you insane. Save your money and buy a new camera!
