The Mac Pro 8-Core Desktop Computer Workstation from Apple is the company's premiere desktop workstation. The system is built with professionals in mind, and is an ideal computer for video professionals, photographers, and graphic designers.
The system is powered by 2 quad-core Intel Xeon 5400 CPUs running at a clockspeed of 2.8GHz. This "8-Core" configuration gives you up to 8 times the processing power of a single CPU, making it an ideal solution for mission critical applications. The system also boasts 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive capacity, Apple's SuperDrive DVD burner with dual-layer disc support, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR for wireless device connectivity, and nVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics with 512MB of memory.
Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is the computer's operating system. The 64-bit OS takes full advantage of the Xeon processors that form the heart of the system. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard includes such software applications as Time Machine, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat AV, Safari, QuickTime, and iCal. You'll also be happy to know that iLife '09, the popular digital life suite that includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, iWeb, and GarageBand is preinstalled on the computer.
The Mac Pro is an excellent choice for any professional, power user, or Mac aficionado.

I usually build my own PCs. I expected a good overall value - combined OS and hardware. I was very surprised at the quality and build of the Apple hardware. The hardware alone is well worth the money. This hardware compares very favourably with any high-end PC competitor. The whole environment is just incredible. It is very quiet - incredibly quiet. It is finished to extremely fine tolerances in its "fit and finish". It is incredibly robust ... 1/8 " or better aluminum case ... This is just very well designed. It is also extremely powerful - 2 processor, eight physical cores all running at 2.8 GHz. Its now my MAC, my Linux box and I will put 64 bit windows on it too.
- How you use the product
Software Development, primarily. Also audio.
- Things that are great about it
Fast, powerful, flexible, good expansion capabilities, and easily expandable.
From a hardware design perspective, well thought out (though large).
Easily control and work across multiple operating systems (virtualization or proper boot).
2 GB of memory is insufficient if you intend to use the processing capabilities that it has (under typical loads). I upgraded to 8 GB, which works well, though it pages during compilation when working on 1 OS, basic conditions/install with minimal applications launched. So, I would recommend 8 GB as a starting point for either pro multimedia or virtualization scenarios, and 4 GB for software development w/o virtualization. From the memory upgrade, the performance went from disappointing to impressive.
Performance with Logic Studio exceeded my expectations.
Overall, the performance is what I was expecting for Software Development (I was previously using a 4 core). The design is good, and it should keep me up to date for a while. The Mac Pro is definitely in another class wrt to power than Apple's portables and consumer desktops.
The ability to run multiple operating systems on one device is great (though I use fusion - I haven't taken the time to install the parallels that was included). This aspect really isn't great on my modern MacBook Pro (4 GB). While it is possible to run 2 OSs at once on the MBP, it is slow enough to test the average person's patience under even light use. This works well using the Mac Pro with 8 GB.
- Things that aren't so great about it
The entry level price point and value for cost for these machines is relatively high -- this is the reason it loses one star.
The fact that these do not ship with Airport cards (like Apple's portables), and that the cards are not user installable (like Apple's portables, when they were not standard).
The built in speaker could be improved...
