I've been a serious amateur photographer for 38 years, and I've had a whole line of Canons (and Topcons before that). I have a Canon EOS 20D from 5 years ago, and I love that camera. I just bought a Canon Rebel T1i as a backup body for a trip overseas. I also bought it for its ability to take quality movies, rather than taking a point-and-shoot Canon SX100 IS, which would not serve as a backup still camera of high quality.

The T1i is a knockout and is destined now to be my prime camera. Though it's rated as an advanced amateur camera and the 20D is rated as a prosumer camera, I find that the T1i can do everything that the 20D can, and more, as I dig into all the functions. It is also much easier to use, particularly for the custom functions, which all display quickly on the LCD monitor along with their text descriptions; on the 20D the LCD screen was too small to allow this. The menus are now arrayed under 8 icons, so that one does not need to scroll to a new screen under any one icon to see all the functions. All the standard shooting functions such as aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation level, white balance, etc. also display at once on the Ti1's large LCD screen. Exposure compensation is a snap, accessed by holding a button and rotating a thumbwheel. On the older 20D, one had to remember to set the "on" switch of the camera to the second setting in order to access exposure compensation. Mirror lockup on the T1i is a one-push setting, vs. having to go to custom functions on the 20D. Picture review in the field is a snap. The LCD monitor is detailed and bright, usably visible even in sunlight if one shades it with one's body. One pays for the size and brightness with shorter battery life; be sure to buy a spare and keep it charged.

Autofocus uses the same 9-point system as in the 20D and the focus points are selectable, as is the mode (one-shot, servo, auto switching between the two). Picture modes on the main dial are preserved from the 20D order, with the addition of a movie mode. (Be sure to order speed-class 6 or higher SDHC cards if you want to take movies.) The frame rate on HD movies is a bit low, but 1280 x 720 movies are very nice. In still photos, the frame burst rate of 3.4 fps is lower than the 5 fps of the 20D but should serve almost all users. The set of details that one can set for stills is comprehensive, from resolution to sharpness to saturation to much more. One feature new to me was compensation for light falloff at the image corners. Since the T1i (as other DSLRs) knows the lens mounted on it and the focal length and aperture being used, it can compute the light falloff and compensate for it; the results are striking, especially to a photographer who has had to use image-processing software on older film images to work around this. For processing images to display on a high-res screen or to print, I've been using Picture Window Pro, an excellent piece of software, nicely priced, and one used by pros. This program compensates for the minor failings of the otherwise excellent 18-55 mm kit lens, which I can then use as my main lens with confidence that I'll get fine images. I use 2 macros, a telephoto, a prime lens, and a high-speed zoom for special situations.

The T1i has higher resolution, at 15.1 MP vs. 8.1 MP (although this is no big deal for me; I've made stunning 13"x19" prints on Super B paper from the 20D images). A small thing, but really not so small, is that the picture review on the T1i's larger LCD monitor is so detailed that I can check the focus with confidence. On the 20D's monitor, the resolution is inadequate to test the focus on the fine details. With the T1i, I took a picture of our living room that had books on a coffee table; in the review mode, I could read the printing on the books in exquisite detail. Another useful feature is automatic dust removal from the sensor by ultrasonic shaking, as on other modern competitors' cameras. I never had much trouble with dust on the 20D's sensor, but it has happened.

I have shot videos with a variety of apparatus, from clunky old camcorders to the Canon SX 100 IS as a handy moderate-quality imaging system. The videos from the T1i are very satisfying. Of course, serious video demand a proper video camera. With this or any other DSLR, one has to use the digital live view in movie mode because the mirror is locked up; the camera has to be held away from the eye and this makes it inherently less steady.

The T1i offers me full compatibility with the EF and EF-S lenses I've acquired. The controls are also mostly familiar, in large part matching those on the 20D. The mode dial is almost exactly the same, and controls that differ in location mostly have the same markings as on the 20D.

Both the T1i and the 20D seem to take very good photos up to ISO 800, after which the noise gets to be progressively more distracting when the images are viewed or printed at high magnification. The T1i offers auto ISO, which can be handy. The fully automatic mode includes auto ISO and everything else. A pro might think this is cheating or beneath him or her, but it is remarkably good for use "on the fly," when one doesn't have time for creative controls. The T1i is physically lighter than the 20D, perhaps a minor consideration for one's personal convenience or even for stability as the mirror flips up as the picture is taken. Lastly, the T1i cost me half as much as the 20D. Here's Moore's law on the progress of computer technology as applied to cameras!

The T1i is a winner, a camera that should be a top choice for a wide range of photographers, from amateurs just beginning to use a DSLR (they can use the amazing full auto mode and learn more as they go) to prosumers. Pros would go for a camera with the extreme weather sealing that neither the T1i nor the 20D has, but I will be taking the T1i out in rain and dust, as I have taken the 20D with no ill effects - I just clean the cameras and take care not to let dust get in during lens changing. The T1i will be seeing a lot of work with me!

Needless, to say, it does all I need and more, with legendary Canon image quality and all that. Would definitely buy this again if I needed another. Of course, I would be tempted to upgrade. :)

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Very straigtforward and easy to use. Packed with goodies for the intermediate. The HD video quality is good too.

The only thing I would change is making the manual aperture adjustment button easier to reach/access. This isn't specific to this camera, but seems to be the way most digital cameras have progressed. The shutter speed can easily be changed with the scroll wheel next to the shutter button, however; to change the aperture, you need to press a small button on the back next to the screen while at the same time turning the same scroll wheel. I just think there might be easier and more comfortable ways to do this.

Back in the days of film, shutter speed and aperture were on different switches on the camera (one on lense and one on the body).

Received this body as a replacement from Canon for the equally useless XSi. This camera has the SAME problem that the XSi had of truly awful sharpness with lenses of focal lengths greater than 200mm, shorter lenses aren't that great either. I've spent over a year arguing with Canon on these bodies. This thing is literally going to go live at the city landfill, it's that bad. Don't throw your money away (like I did) on any body in this product line.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

As a step above a novice and certainly not even a semi-pro, this camera is everything I expected and more. Already having some Canon lenses, I got the body only and it works great. I've been reading up on utilizing more of my expertise and less of the camera and my initial results are stunning. In full sunlight, this camera takes professional quality photos. In low light or shade, you can manipulate to take better photos than lesser cameras. While still learning how to fully utilize the T1i, I'm constantly thinking about what I can shoot. I highly recommend reading up about the camera's capabilities. It can do much more than you think and if you have trouble, nine times out of ten it's your fault not the cameras. This is great for the person looking to take more printable, frameable and web enabled photos.

You might hear bad things about the video capabilities, but don't fret. It will be fine for your home movies. That is, unless you're shooting the next Godfather on it. The video I've shot, and I am a professional videographer, is fine. Exactly what need.

                        Good luck.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

Great camera, but in my opinion, the T2i upgrades (especially mic jack and manual aperture control in video mode) are well worth the extra money. They allow more professional video production. On the other hand, if you have no interest in shooting video, or plan to get a separate camcorder (that's actually the best way to go) then I would recommend the T1i. It shoots great still images, and the extra 3MP of the T2 are not really significant.

So far I am enjoying the camera very much, however, being a novice photographer I still have many things to learn on how to use it. Luckily this camera is really easy to use, and with a little help from a more advanced friend I should be hanging works of art in our hallways in no time at all.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):

I used to have a Canon Rebel back in the day. you remember when we used "film" and took it to be "processed"? Since those days of antiquity, I have been using digital point-and-shoot cameras. Essentially they last a few years and you just shelve them when something better comes along. I am not a photographer, per se, but I do enjoy looking at pictures, and I forgot how much I enjoyed using a vewfinder until I got this camera. I had my old Canon lenses, and they worked great. I am not going to be shooting any feature films or creating works of art with my photos, so the T1i works just fine for me. The megapixel count is great, the video looks amazing and all the recitals and vacations are bumped up a notch, and I like the viewfinder. Another factor in choosing this one for $100 less than the superior T2i and the new T3i was its availability. I think that the disaster in Japan has made the newer ones unavailable for the near future, and I don't like to wait.

I plan to use this camera for mainly landscape photography, seascapes and cityscapes with an external remote and a tripod.

The only main disavantage of purchasing this camera body is for me it does not come with warranty because I imported this product from overseas. It is built for US markets. In hindsight I would have been better off buying a camera body built for Australian markets in Australia because I would have purchased the product with warranty rather than without warranty.

Still I really like my new Rebel DSLR and I have no intention of returning it

It's is a light weight camera, with adequate options. The only difference between the t1i and t13 is the flip screen. I prefer to take photos with my eye to the eye piece, so I prefer to have the t1i to keep it simple. Great starter camera with several auto adjusting settings. Very easy to use, very fast shooting. It's a great buy at a great price.

A very easy transition from film to digital with thia camera and finally a reasonable pixal setting for the cost. Going to Macchu Picchu with it and will be great.
