Get a high-capacity memory card so you don't get caught without memory.
The big news, however, is the Rebel T1i's ability to record a choice of full HD 1080p, 720p, and VGA video capture, which places it among the few DSLRs currently available that can capture true high-resolution video that beats or meets the image quality of far costlier pro camcorders
To help reduce retouching time, the Rebel T1i features an EOS Integrated Cleaning System that combats dust through the use of high-frequency vibrations that shake dust loose from the sensor's front-mounted IR filter every time you power up and power down. There are also anti-static coatings on the low-pass filter to keep it dust-free, and a body cap designed not to 'shed' particles that can possibly find their way into the mirror chamber.
To better enable successful imaging under the most challenging of lighting conditions, the camera's DIGIC 4 Image Processor allows you to set the ISO rating from ISO 100 through 3200 in standard mode, and from 6400 to 12,800 in expanded mode. Once the 9-point wide-area AF system (with cross-type center point) nails the focus you can fire up to 3.4 fps for up to 170 exposures, allowing you the option of capturing longer image sequences.

This is my first SLR and I could not be happier with my purchase. I typically use it to photograph people and animals on our horse farm as well as portraits of my family. I've also shot some indoor concerts in very low light situations (which is why I recommend the EX 430 flash - it is awesome)
The camera is definitely bigger than the point-and-shoot cameras I'm used to, but it is not hard to make the adjustment to carrying it. The image quality more than makes up for the size.
In full auto mode the camera takes incredible pictures and they almost always come out great. You can quickly and easily switch it to another auto mode, such as portrait or sports, depending on the situation and the camera makes the change instantly.
It's also really easy to use in manual modes. I've set the camera up at night and opened the aperture up to get shots of some lightning after a storm had passed. It was really fun and easy and the shots of the lightning came out great - the camera works fine in low light for that type of thing. I've never been able to photograph lightning before!
Video quality is really good as well, and the image stabalization makes shooting video pretty easy. My only complaint is that with the kit lens the autofocus in video mode is quite weak. I would recommend just turning it off in fact and using manual focus. You really don't have to mess with it much during shooting usually, but if you do then you need to make the focus change manually since the AF really doesn't work while you are recording. The AF in video mode is why I gave four stars rather than five. It is nice that the camera has the feature (you have to go up to the GH1 to find another one that can even do AF in video mode at all) but it is a bit dissappointing.
I normally just shoot in JPG mode, but I have messed with RAW a bit and the included Canon software is really powerful. If you shoot in RAW mode the software allows you to tweak almost any setting the camera has available to adjust the picture. It also allows you to make adjustments for chromatic aberrations which are noticeable with the kit lens in certain situations (high light, high contrast).
My next purchase will be a new lens, probably an L series Canon or high end Sigma. I am very happy with this camera and it's quality and features. You would really need to go to the 5D Mark II to get better pictures and features and that is a much more expensive camera.

[...] I took some pictures, played with it for a couple of days and when reviewing files on my computer I found a dead pixel. Returned it to BH, speedy and cooperative people, they sent a new camera. I received it last week. The automatic focus system of the replacement camera does not work. Tested different lenses, setting, switches, programs...it does not autofocus. They are sending me a new RMA. I'm upgrading to the Canon 7D, no more Rebel T1i attempts. On page 128 of the T1i manual it talks about "Camera's internal temperature increase and image degradation" when shooting movies. The camera will get hot, and if it gets too hot, it will stop shooting.Bottom line, this product looks attractive on paper, but in reality it has to go back to the drawing board. Sorry Canon, I'm sticking with you with the 7D, but with the T1i you pushed the envelope too far, not to mention the 20fps speed on HD1080.

I recieved this as a gift. I love photography, but my Sony HX100v wasn't cutting it. This camera is great for all sorts of things. Its size and shape is perfect. I've only had it for a week or so and I already have a set of three lenses with the body! I've used it every day since I got it.
The large LCD is gret for me because I like being able to view my pictures better and shoot live view. The menu is easy to use and the buttons are placed well.
I don't realy have anything bad to say about this camera. It's great for a beginner/consumer photographer, like myself.

I use this camera professionally and personally. I am a real estate agent and needed something affordable, but "entry-level" professional so my listings would look as good as possible (when I wasn't hiring a professional photographer for higher end listings) and I had the option of doing short informative videos for my website and social media channels. I owned an older Canon DSLR but needed to upgrade to something with higher resolution and features. The Rebel T1i was a perfect solution. I can shoot full auto or in several specific auto modes or I can adjust any number of variables in manual mode (which is a learning process.) In the meantime, I'm producing beautiful point and shoot pictures that delight my clients and my friends and family.

Bought this camera factory refurbished and it feels brand new. Take BEAUTIFUL 1080p, 720p, & Standard Def. video. The stills I can get from this camera makes it well worth more than the price I bought it for. Auteur or Professional I would recommend this buy!

As a professional sculptor, I am using the T1i to document my work. Although the range of functions is a bit overwhelming at first, most of what I need can be done in the automatic mode. Through the manual (I have also bought a book) and experimentation, I am learning to use the other modes, especially video. At some point I will use the EOS Utility to make time-lapse documentations of certain processes in my work.

I work for a professional costuming and prop studio. We use the camera for both documentation of our work and for photoshoots and making films. The T1i is a great introductory DSLR capable of 720p. It can take 1080p however the framerate is low at 20fps and makes for choppy video.
I bought the camera as a used camera and it arrived factory refurbished. There was however a stuck pixel, which is common on DSLRs, the sensor wouldn't map it however but I contacted B&H and Canon and both offered to fix the problem however after a weekend of shooting photos the sensor finally mapped the pixel and I didn't need to send it in.

Got this item refurbished, it is for all intents and purposes perfect. Completely indistinguishable from a "new" item.
What you get for the money is simply fantastic, especially if you are just venturing into your first DSLR. The included kit lens, while certainly not astounding, is perfectly sufficient for starting out and gets the job done perfectly fine. The camera it'self is great. It may be "outdated" and officially discontinued, it may not have as many "features" or as high a megapixel count (which is mostly a marketing tool anyway) as a newer model, but at the end of the day what matters is the pictures. The pictures from this thing are outstanding. The marginal improvements in image quality made by newer models are literally indistinguishable to the average person.
Obviously it comes up rather short as a "professional" camera, but for the average user or student, or somebody just wanting their first DSLR getting a phenomenal camera with two for this price is simply a deal that you cannot pass by. I would highly recommend this kit to anyone looking for their first DSLR set-up.

this camera was so easy to use! I took it out of the box, and went to china the next day and used it on every single minute of my trip. It makes the pictures look spectacular, and I can say that with confidence because i am not a photography genius.

I am not a photographer, so I can't go into detail about each aspect of this camera. I just wanted a camera that would be quick enough to catch moving kids. My old camera was just too slow to focus. This camera works perfectly! I've been able to get all the action shots that I've been missing! I use the sports setting with continuous shot so I don't miss anything. The only thing I don't like would be that if you don't understand photography you'll be doing a lot of reading to understand all the settings. For the most part it's pretty simple. I would definitely recommend this to every beginner of SLR cameras. It definitely serves its purpose.

I bought this for my wife to teach her a little bit about what I do. This is a wonderful first time camera for the price. I probably wouldn't use it out in the field but for an everyday family camera it works perfectly and takes some pretty decent shots.

So far I have mainly used my camera for shooting pictures of my very active 1 year old daughter. I am looking forward to also using it to take pictures of nature. I also love that it has faster shutter speed than my previous camera.

I was upgrading from a point and shoot - or as I refer to those "point, push the button, wait for kids to leave frame, then shoot." I was getting tired of missing all the moments with my two toddlers so I researched for a few months DSLR cameras and finally went with the Canon T1i.
My only complaint is it is a little bulky but the pros way out weigh that one con.
It takes great photos. It is quick so I do not miss the moment I am trying to capture. Video is great too. Did a very nice video of my little ones 1st bday and the smash cake. It is easy to use, features easy to understand.
I would buy it again.

I am an amateur photographer and I wanted to upgrade from my current Camera. I did a decent amount of homework studying different cameras in my price range and found the Canon Rebel met all my needs. I was looking at any of the recent models , and felt the best with the T1i. While Ive only had the kit for a few weeks, I think its going to work out great. The lens that came with the kit was the regular 18/55mm but I think its a good idea to add a secondary lens to complete the package. The auto settings work well , but the best part about this camera is the ability to set your own manually for whatever situation you need. High quality focus with crisp colors and sharpness and the camera feels good in the hand.

Got it to document artwork and artists working at our non-profit and it is SUCH an improvement over the last point-and-shoot camera we had. I am not a professional photographer but we need quality documentation of our artists at work and so far its very intuitive and takes beautiful photographs. We got one of the factory refurbished models and you would never know it wasn't brand new. I haven't figured out how to take video very well and the video comes out shaky.

I have only used point and shoot camera's before and when I showed interest in buying an SLR, almost all my photography friends recommended the Canon Rebel as a great first camera. I have a little background in camera's, but was nervous due to my lack of knowledge. However, I love the body and it's practical and purposeful placement of options and buttons. I am beyond happy with my purchase and feel like I received a little confidence and clarity with the camera! LOVE IT!!
