Requires Camera-Specific T-Mount.
This extreme 650-1300mm f/8-16 Manual Focus Lens from Bower is an economical way to achieve some ultra-telephoto photography, all the way up to 1300mm. This is a T-mount lens, which means that aperture is not communicated to or controlled by the camera body, and as such must be used only in aperture-priority autoexposure mode (if your camera has it) or in the manual exposure mode. There are T-mounts available for every modern DSLR system as well as for older film cameras and even C-mount cameras.
It will work on both "full frame" digital cameras as well as the smaller-format APS-C (15 x 22mm) cameras, but has only one effective aperture at any focal length, which varies from f/8.0 at 650mm to f/16.0 at 1300mm. That's not much of a hindrance, however, as you'd likely use this lens at its relatively small maximum aperture in any case.
This lens requires bright light and a high ISO setting on the camera to get a fast shutter speed (or fast film in a film camera), and needs a sturdy tripod or monopod, but can deliver very sharp results if used properly.

I purchased this mainly for wildlife shots but was amazed when I used it to shoot the full moon three nights after I received it in the mail. The craters and ridges of the moon were awesome. This is definitely not a walk around lens but when you want to get close it can do it, a tripod is a must, not a cheap one, a good sturdy one.

this lens cost me around $300 [...] and price at this price to hope for crystal sharp images at 650-1300mm was out of question to begin with but i realize that if i get focus good enough and with a little bit of post processing the images don't look that bad. You need a good Strong tripod as its heavy and long lens that will cause the camera shake if tripod is not capable of that much weight at a longer leverage, images look blues if we don't adjust for Chromatic Aberration

This not a point and shoot lens, it's use requires some planning and thought. With that said, I have achieved some very good results. It requires a good stable tripod and I also use a monopod for extra stability.

Using for Moon's pictures. Good quality for that price. Using with Canon EOS. I recommended using it with a stable tripod. Also recommended Bower UV FILTER 95mm and in my case General Brand REAR LENS CAP f/CANON EOS for that lens with T-mount.

It is an AWEFUL heavy lens, so mounted on a tripod it is Simple and Easy to use. with my sony A33 I have taken photos of the tips of tree branches clear at the back of my property. When the nights clear I shall enjoy using it as a telescope. I suggest everyone add this to their lens collection.

Comments about Bower 650-1300mm f/8-16 Manual Focus T-Mount Lens:
I got the lens for taking a few pictures in the open sea of boats and other objects far away. With my Rebel I got some awesome pictures, the F-16 at 1300mm is fine and very usable in full sun and produces images with detail far above what you can pick up with your own eyes.
The downsides are severe chromatic aberration, high weight, and the manual zoom is much more problematic than the manual focus (unlock and pull is a slow and cumbersome way of zooming), at the high zooms the camera clearly is a little off the plane of the lens (it bends the lens at the zoom point). The vignetting in the viewfinder of my rebel at 1300mm is also at the point that it becomes difficult to spot things, this however doesn't show up at all in the final picture.
Overall, for the price, it's a good buy, not the best pictures, but it can be very useful as long as you have a sturdy tripod.

I give this 4 stars due to the low cost. I didn't expect a [$] lense here. You can really get up close with this lense. Play with the time settings as there is no aperture. It is a fun lense to use.

i picked this up for my d5000 from the store in nyc last week, and i must say, i wish i knew i wasn't able to adjust the aperture setting in my camera, so its a basic lens. i can adjust the shutter speed, and that works ok, snapped a pic of the moon the other morning with this combo.

I love using this lens for night time cenery shots
I took some fantastic pictures of the moon.
great for tripod work. You need a goo tripod
(Big CON)when the lens is extended all the way out to f-16 it is very unstable on the tripod
and if you use a slow shutter speed the the camera shakes a bit.

Comments about Bower 650-1300mm f/8-16 Manual Focus T-Mount Lens:
I bought this lens hoping to use it for bird photography and found a number of issues that caused me to return it. First, make sure you order it with the letter at the end of the part number appropriate to your camera (e.g., 'N' for Nikon) or, like me, you'll get one without the adapter, [...].Once I got it back, I found that very oddly at the shortest focal length of 650mm it only focuses on very distant objects, while at the longest focal length of 1300mm it will focus on closer objects (close being about 30 feet). This makes it very difficult to use, since obviously you are more likely to use the shorter focal length for closer objects and the longer for distant objects. As mentioned, it is heavy, and given the focal length, you need something much sturdier than the usual tripod, specially since the small aperture of f/16 at full focal length means you will be shooting relatively slowly on a huge magnification, so even small jitter will wreck your picture. As they advertise, you can really only use it in very bright light. Since you are not likely to be able to shoot at high shutter speeds, it is not very useful for moving objects like birds.[...]

Purchase this as a lens to drag around the country side leaving my expensive lens back at the studio. I have found that this lens meets or exceeds my needs. I wouldn't recommend this lens for the novice you will need good understanding of f/stops and focal length to get the photos you really want to capture.

I am getting ready to go to Alaska on a Cruise and wanted something to take pictures from the Ship. I took the Bower up to the National Park in our area and shot some really great pictures of the Mountain peaks from the Park. It was just like I was there at the top of the mountain. The lens case is not long enough to keep the T mount for the Nikon attached to it with a cover on it for protection.
