I use this camera how any photo enthusiast would. It matches my style of photography at the moment, roam around and compose on the move as it is rather light and small for what it is. I can tell you this is one giant leap from any point and shoot or cell phone camera that will be in the next 100 years. I had looked at every camera in the consumer DSLR range that Canon and Nikon makes. I had previously shot with the D3000 (decent camera by the way but not my cup of tea) and I found that the D5000 out preformed everything that Canon offered in the price range and even the T1i and T2i that are considerably more expensive cameras. Sure this thing only shoots 12 mega pixels, but, I found that the colours seemed a bit more natural and vivid and the ISO performance was better then the Canon offerings (XSi, XS, XTi, XT, T1i, T2i, 5D mk I NOT MK II, source DXOlabs sensor test) and I found the control inputs flowed better for me where as handling the Canons I found myself resorting to profanities constantly while trying to change shutter speeds, drive modes, and the like. The variable tilt screen lets me get into places that most cameras can't simply unless the user decides to "blind fire" but as you have probably found with your experiences, this doesn't work all that well. It saves money for me because I don't have to buy screen protectors because when I store this I can have the screen folded away from harms way for the most part (high velocity impacts not included). With the kit 18-55mm lens, it doesn't preform the greatest in low light and to auto focus this camera uses a contrast type AF sensor so that annoying little white light kicks in which is why many Nikon users complain about slower focusing at 300mm on a 70-300mm at the far end of their reach or in dim lighting such as a city street at 9pm (on the canons the on board or attached in some cases flash pops up and fires at full blast a bunch and you've lost any hope for a good picture if its of people). The video mode requires you to be in live view and that you be good with your manual focus as the guys over at Nikon don't want to cannibalize the D90 or D3100 by adding a full-time auto focus, but look on the bright side, effective use of manual focus lets your artistic side come out more. You can reprogram certain buttons (IE the self-timer or auto-focus lock-up button) to suit your needs, for me, I reprogrammed the self timer button for ISO adjustments and left the AF be as I changed the ISO settings a lot more then I ever needed a self-timer for anything. The system expandability is why I look to Canon and Nikon where as Pentax, Sony, and Olympus don't offer the same expandability, (IE accessories available for the camera such as speed lights such as the impressive SB-400 and SB-600, 3rd party lenses such as the outstanding Sigma 18-200 HSM OS lens and the 35mm Nikon, and under-water housings and the like). I run this with a 35mm Nikon and I am debating on a Tamron or Nikon 70-300, and a SB-600 speed light because I intend on shooting professionally. The one thing I would add to the cart right after the D5000 is a skylight filter to protect the glass in the lens from damage, its a lot cheaper to replace a $50 lens then a $150 lens or more expensive depending on the lens. A different strap might be a good thing to get, but an even better thing to get is a camera bag that doesn't look like a camera bag. A tripod is a nice thing to get, the Aluminum Travel Angel series from Benro if your style is to walk around with your camera as I know lots of people do. I would recommend that you flip the screen before mounting the camera to a tripod. Whatever you do please don't cheap out on the accessories for this camera, yes you can buy that $18 tripod at [...], but you might find that the tripod that you thought was a great deal just broke your camera because it got knocked over by a gentle breeze and the camera happened to land on rocks and tumble down a cliff into a lake (the likely hood of this happening could be remote for you, but you get my point).

The website will verify if your camera "qualifies" and then generates a UPS tag for free repair. We were on assignment when ours failed and have had to buy a new body D5000 to complete the job. Also, as of January, 2011, the D5000 has been discontinued by Nikon

This is, essentially, a D90 crammed into a compact D60 body. It takes as good pics as the D90, which proudly stands next to any of the classic cameras Nikon ever produced. Sadly for Nikon (not for me), early production runs had to be recalled. They were fixed by Nikon but re/e-tailers can't sell them for new and offer them at a deep discount. I purchased mine (body only) at B&H about 1-1/2 years ago for [$, a steal. I shoot mostly with primes and when Nikon came out with their 35/1.8 for this camera... that was it. A marriage made in amateur photographer heaven. This camera has great ergonomics, excellent picture quality up to ISO 1600, some convenient in-camera RAW processing capabilities (though I mostly use jpeg... the horror!). It's fast, great battery life, and has an articulated screen, wonderful picture quality, responsive - it really is everything you can ask for in a camera. For me it is perfect. This great camera has been discontinued and B&H now has the body on sale for [$]. C'mon - that's upscale point-n-shoot price. Just get it already. Approaching it from a bang-for-the-buck perspective, it's the best deal out there, refurbed with a full Nikon warranty. The only "con" I'd give it has painfully slow auto focus in Live View when framing using the articulated LCD. In regular mode when framing through the VF it is lightning fast.

This is a great digital SLR with incredible technology. It is great for a beginner SLR user with many settings that take great photos without the user needing to know a lot about SLR's. One of the greatest things about it is how you can correct and adjust images on the LCD screen without having to upload the image onto the computer first.

I just started taking photography and I am in love with this camera. The many settings, manual or automatic, everything is wonderful! There is one thing that is not in the manual, which how long you can view your display on the LCD screen. I bought this camera to up grade from a G11. I wanted to go DSLR for a long time. The reason i decided to get this camera was, after reading a lot of reviews, it seemed to be the biggest bang for the buck. I use the camera to take pictures of my family, vacations, and lost of nature. The pictures are crisp, clean, and my wife finds the camera very user friendly. The preset settings do a great job but you still have all the manual functions as well. The only thing i do not like about the camera is that it does not have a AF motor. That limits you to what lenses you can get. Now do not get me wrong, there are still tons of options. But i really want to get a 70-300. The one that allows AF to work with my camera is quite a bit more. Yes i understand that they stopped making this camera. It is better then the d3100 but not as good as the D90. I also believe this to be better then any canon equivalent. I find this to be the biggest bang for your buck.

I am first time DSLR owner and chose the D5000 due to the numerous reviews on how easy it was to use. I must agree, after a few weeks of owning it, it's very intuitive and my pictures are fantastic. I'm still learning how to be a photographer, but the pictures have been phenomenal. I've taken both indoor and outdoor and so far, so good. Pics of my daughters soccer games were crisp and clean.

I love this camera! It has a lot of automatic settings that help you get used to using an SLR, and it has a few manual settings that also let you do a few more advanced things.
I appreciated that the camera came with a decent lens that works in most situations. It focuses well, though the next lens I would invest in is a zoom lens.
After you mess with the settings, you can get some really great quality (almost professional looking) pictures. Overall I am very happy.

I am a professional wildlife and nature photographer and I've used this camera with a variety of lenses from macro to 500mm telephoto. It is the person who makes great photos, not the camera. All you need is a good tool and the D5000 more than satisfies that requirement. I sometimes wish I had a little faster speed on flight shot captures but I have never felt underpowered with the D5000. It takes beautiful shots and people who see my commercial work ask if I am using a D300 for my photography. I consider that a statement of the excellent quality of photographs the D5000 is capable of. It has stood up to a lot of photoshoots with no problems at all. Some day when they Nikon comes out with a D9000 and greatly enhanced features I might consider turning in my trusty D5000. Until then I will keep it. The D5000 is the best camera under $1000 you can buy.

The new model 3100 is by far not so complete as this one. The next upgrade step to go is too expensive for somebody that is not a professional photographer, but enjoy making good pictures.

After much debate between the two leading brands of DSLR cameras, I decided on the Nikon. With the larger sensor, I felt it was the better value. So far I'm very pleased with it. I'm still shooting in full auto as I learn the settings. I'm taking a class shortly for beginners to help me get better acquainted with this amazing gadget. So far I feel I made a great choice and look forward to many years with this camera.
