For amateur who are not versed in the technical side of lighting or more advanced users who want a compact yet powerful hotshoe flash, the Canon Speedlite 270EX is versatile and portable without being complicated.
The flash head bounces and has two-steps for different focal lengths. It makes use of just two AA batteries which adds to the minimal impact it has on camera bag cargo space.
The flash supports all current versions of TTL, including evaluative E-TTL II. This is great for photographers that shoot high contrast or reflective subjects, like those encountered in wedding photography.

This flash should have a place in any Canon shooter's bag, pro and amateur alike. It's not the greatest flash, not by a long shot - it lacks even some basics, like swivel ability. But if you're just walking around with your camera, it's much nicer having this on top of it instead of one of the larger models simply because of it's size.
Throw a diffuser on there for a few dollars and it'll be able to handle a good 70-80% of situations where you just need SOME sort of flash and don't want the old deer-in-the-headlights look. Not perfectly, but at least good enough. Even if your camera has a built-in unit, keep in mind that not only is this flash more powerful, but it sits farther above the lens plane (looks slightly more natural and gives less red-eye), and gives you bounce capabilities.
If it's going to be your only flash, then I suggest spending the extra money on a 430 or 580 ex ii instead. If you don't get one now, then you'll end up upgrading later anyway so just save the money and go to it directly. But if you're just looking for something to carry around at times when photography isn't the most important part of the day, then this thing really fits the bill.

I bought this flash for my 30D because of its small size for when I don't want to carry a bigger flash. It is a great little flash but after using it I do prefer the 430EX II because I can't access all the features from my camera.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
Purchased for use w/ the Canon G1X, and I've found it to be perfect for that camera. I would want a bigger more powerful unit for a dslr though. The 270EX works well for close up shots too, though the G1X does not focus very close. It also works well for bounce flash if the ceiling is not too high-- 7-8 ft. ceiling is fine though. Small, light and easy to carry.

I've been playing around with my new flash for the last couple of days now and I'm very pleased with the results. I still have a lot to learn but this flash certainly gets the job done for small scale things. It's pretty small but very effective for the hobbyist.

This weekend was my first time using the speed light. It was easy to use. The battery lased the whole shoot. I'm just starting photography, so I'm not sure what a more expensive speedlite would do, but this one worked great. Made my pictures look amazing.

I spent [$] on mine when it came out, and I expect a lot more for the money since mine was made in [*]. It's just a piece of junk that randomly shuts off while in the middle of using it, its recycle time is like 4 seconds. I like that it's really small and all but it was[$]! Thats as much as an XBOX. Comon! I don't expect wireless technology or anything but I think Canon could have squeezed in a swivel so you can bounce the flash if holding the camera for portraits or something. I'm worried Canon is going to end up taking the cheap [*]route like Sony for most of their accessories. The connection quality to the camera I think is the main issue and it appears to be some alloy rather than pure nickel or gold plated.

I am very satisfied with the product. I gave thought to an alternative to Canon but after speaking to a colleague who went down that path... I decided to heed his advice and stay with Canon given it is for my Canon SX30IS.
I performed a series of test shots with the flash set through its many stages; extended, and various upward positions. Results were good.
This was my first purchase through B&H and I recently made a purchase through them for a lens hood. I highly recommend B&H!

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
It's pretty clear that the flash built into the G12 is intended as an emergency auxiliary fill flash for a fairly narrow set of circumstances. It tends to make portraits look harsh, blows highlights consistently, and pretty much guarantees red eye.
That's where the Speedlite 270EX comes in. It's the perfect companion for the G12. It's lightweight, by virtue of taking only two AA batteries, so it won't make your G12 top-heavy.
The flash tilts upward so that light can be bounced off a ceiling. Indirect lighting does an amazing job of making the light look more natural.
I'll also mention that the 270EX looks great sitting on top of a G12.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
This is the first flash I have purchased for my T2i. The main reason I bought this was for indoor photos of people, etc. What a difference it has made! I hated using the flash on the camera, pictures were glarey and unevenly exposed. With the flash pointed at the ceiling I can get great fully lit photos without glare. While its an entry level flash it has worked for me and best of all I could afford it.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
I bought this to use with my Canon T2i in part because the built-in flash was just too harsh when taking portraits. After reading the reviews, I figured that this would be a good flash option for the money. It has been better than expected. The B&H Associate suggested that I get a diffuser with this (do it) and this also made a huge difference. I have had fun working with the different angled settings to get different results. The diffuser works great. It is compact, lightweight, and easy to use. I guess the wireless function on the 270EX II would be neat, but I am not sure when I would use it or if it was worth it. This is a great flash with some nice features.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
The only thing missing is a pivot feature...but I knew it didn't have that when I ordered. That feature would have ended up costing me more. It is a good price and a good value for what you get, though. Works well and hasn't let me down yet...
