For amateur who are not versed in the technical side of lighting or more advanced users who want a compact yet powerful hotshoe flash, the Canon Speedlite 270EX is versatile and portable without being complicated.
The flash head bounces and has two-steps for different focal lengths. It makes use of just two AA batteries which adds to the minimal impact it has on camera bag cargo space.
The flash supports all current versions of TTL, including evaluative E-TTL II. This is great for photographers that shoot high contrast or reflective subjects, like those encountered in wedding photography.

This flash should have a place in any Canon shooter's bag, pro and amateur alike. It's not the greatest flash, not by a long shot - it lacks even some basics, like swivel ability. But if you're just walking around with your camera, it's much nicer having this on top of it instead of one of the larger models simply because of it's size.
Throw a diffuser on there for a few dollars and it'll be able to handle a good 70-80% of situations where you just need SOME sort of flash and don't want the old deer-in-the-headlights look. Not perfectly, but at least good enough. Even if your camera has a built-in unit, keep in mind that not only is this flash more powerful, but it sits farther above the lens plane (looks slightly more natural and gives less red-eye), and gives you bounce capabilities.
If it's going to be your only flash, then I suggest spending the extra money on a 430 or 580 ex ii instead. If you don't get one now, then you'll end up upgrading later anyway so just save the money and go to it directly. But if you're just looking for something to carry around at times when photography isn't the most important part of the day, then this thing really fits the bill.

I bought this flash for my 30D because of its small size for when I don't want to carry a bigger flash. It is a great little flash but after using it I do prefer the 430EX II because I can't access all the features from my camera.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
The only thing missing is a pivot feature...but I knew it didn't have that when I ordered. That feature would have ended up costing me more. It is a good price and a good value for what you get, though. Works well and hasn't let me down yet...

Simple, yet elegant, this hotshoe flash is perfect for the dslr enthusiast who wants to add bounce flash to his bag of tricks, without spending a small fortune. With a 3x5 card folded in half and a rubber band, you're in business. It works perfectly with my 40D.

Great flash however I wish I had paid the little extra for the model with wireless flash... Didn't know enough before I purchased... but if you don't want the wireless firing this is a good choice.

I bought the 270EX for use on a G12, even in full auto modes it blows out highlights under 8'. I bought it for it's compactness and appears well made.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
It's precisely what I needed. It's small, good, and it works perfect. I use it for point at shoot pictures, so if you're looking for a flash for professional use then I think you should spend a little more money.
It's not that expensive, and it's just perfect for a semi-profecional photographer.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
I have a Canon 60D and couldn't justify the expense of any of the other Canon flash units (yet). This thing is idiot proof vastly improves low light photo quality. The 90 degree bounce is great. The flash is very small, which is another plus.
As I continue to use it I may find a need for an upgrade but this is perfectfor me now. If you have to decide between another lens and this flash unit, buy the flash. I wish I had bought this when I purchased the camera a year ago. Many poor photos would have turned out better.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
I use this flash unit on my Canon G10 and it compliments it very well in terms of size and appearance. It's not an overwhelming hulk on top of the camera. There's not much to this flash and it's not meant for long distances but in a dim or dark room, it helps tremendously. I added a diffuser to it which helps soften the harshness. I give it 4 stars for being a pricey small flash unit. This really shouldn't break a hundred Canon.

I use this flash as a fill light for contrasty outdoor portraits. Indoors it produces a lovely soft bounce light.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
I primarily purchased this flash since my pop up flash on my Rebel XS is not coporating with me at this time. What I mean the tiny mirco switch in the hotshoe is stuck and thinks there is a flash attached. I get requests to shoot portraits and weddings by friends. So I browsed and read up on the 270 EX by canon, once received, I was not disappointed. It is light weight, offers compactness, and quality lighting.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 270EX Flash:
This is a great flash to start off with before upgrading to the more expensive speedlite 270 II.
I use the product by bouncing it off the ceiling. It's great for portraits because it gives the subject a 3D glow. It's wayyy better than the built in flash that flattens the subject instead. You can extend it and stuff but it doesn't swivel or bounce of the walls unless your shooting in portrait. But i'm happy with the flash right now, but i will get a better one in the future.

This review is from a PowerShot user's perspective.
I think this is the only Speedlite that wasn't more expensive than the camera itself! Anyway, it makes a big difference, allowing for close-distance photography at night, and much higher quality indoor shots. Using the bounce feature definitely makes for more natural looking pictures.
I'm glad that I went with the Canon Speedlite, versus a cheaper brand, because the 270EX is built so solidly. Durability was especially important to me, since I sometimes let my seven-year-old grandchild use the camera.
As appropriate as I feel this unit is for my specific camera, it should be noted that this is the least powerful of the Canon Speedlites now available, so don't expect to be able to take wedding pictures from the back row, if you know what I mean.

I purchased this flash to use on a 40D for an outdoor wedding. It performed very well and recycled fairly quickly.
It worked well as a fill flash outside. A nice step up from the built in flash. Inside it provided plenty of light for my needs.
