The Celestron #44330 Digital & Optical Microscope is a traditional table microscope with a digital imaging eyepiece adapter.  It can be used traditionally as a 100x/200x/400x optical microscope with rack and pinion focusing and LED illumination, but also can output the view to either a computer's LCD screen for live observation or to the included software program to capture still images.  It makes both a good teaching tool and an entertaining scientific instrument.

The optical magnification starts with a 20x eyepiece and is enhanced by a rotating turret nosepiece, instead of a cheaper sliding magnifier.  The #44330 also has a real microscope stage with spring clips, so that you can observe slide specimens.  The cool LED illumination (powered by 2 "AAA" batteries) is adjustable to match the needs of the subject and magnification.

The native 2.0MP resolution (1600 x 1200 pixels) of this microscope is superior to most entry-level digital microscopes, and when digitally imaging the traditional eyepiece is removed.  Because you don't shoot through the traditional eyepiece, you get a brighter image.  This microscope also comes standard with a 2-year warranty instead of a 1-year warranty.

Comments about Celestron Digital & Optical Microscope:

Please note this review is heavily influenced by the fact that i think the unit i bought didn't work. I ordered this item online and was impressed by B and H's delivery time. The unit looks good initially buy on close inspection has glue smears from sloppy manufacture. The optical element worked fine but the digital viewer would not get an image. Upon contacting Celestron and explaining the problem and the lengthy measures I took to try and make it work, the ONLY advice offered was "try plugging it into a different USB port". THis was pretty disappointing. B and H have said I can return the item for a replacement. Hopefully that will work. Thankyou.

Comments about Celestron Digital & Optical Microscope:

This product will be used for a high school biology class. It will enable a number of kids to view the slide on a large computer monitor and so far it looks really good. I have set it up on both a Mac and a PC and it was easy to do. On the Mac I used iChat and and the monitor function. I was then able to view in full screen mode. The software that is included is only for a PC, but it wasn't a problem with the Mac. I wasn't looking for it to capture pictures and I haven't tried that yet. Be advised the maximum magnification using the USB connection varies with the resolution of your computer screen. It is described in the user manual, but it wasn't described in the items general description when I bought it. If you use it as a regular microscope, the maximum magnification is 400x.

      Pros:
      Ease of use.
      Ease of installation.
      Easy to transport.
      Good pictures on computer screen.
      Easy to focus.

      Cons:
Mac users have to figure out how to use it.
Illumination rheostat works, but not well. Full, Dim, Off.
Software cd is only for PC.
      Only includes three sample slides.

Comments about Celestron Digital & Optical Microscope:

I use this with my young son. It is hooked up to a computer and it is totally cool and easy to use. [...] When I bought this B&H had a warning that this was not returnable, so I worked with Celestron Warranty to get a new one. They replaced it with no problem[...] If I was lucky enough to get a working unit on the first try this would have been a great experience. If you buy this inexpensive unit then you are taking a chance that it might not work when it shows up. Good Luck.
