The 1TB 2Big Network Hard Drive from LaCie is an advanced network hard drive with a Gigabit Ethernet interface. It allows you to share files among Windows, Mac, and Linux systems on your network. It also features a USB port for storage expansion, UPnP streaming, Wake-on-LAN capability, and Active Directory support.
The drive is housed in an aluminum enclosure with hot-swappable disk drives. You can configure it as a RAID 0 for full performance and capacity or as a RAID 1 for real-time data mirroring at half capacity. The drive's blue orb is actually a button which, when activated, triggers 1-click file import from a connected USB device.

You will only find out high notoriously unreliable this drive is once you have a problem and google for a solution.I suggest you search before hand about power supply problems.I have spent the better part of two weeks searching for a way to recover my data from this drive which would not boot properly and therefore not show up on my network.I used the solution in the second post on this page to recover my data before deciding what to do with the drive:[@]Oh, and the users manual seems written to confuse.

I bought particularly LaCie P/N 301420U because this is the newest version which may have bugs from older versions eliminated. It has two Hitachi desk star 500GB drives. I like very much how quiet this drive is; it has no fan. The drive has a very bright blue lamp in front. Luckily, you can disable it, but it will still signal if any hardware errors aoccur.
Setup is extremely easy, just install very small software which essentially recognizes the drive under windows. Software also allows to login to different shares using a userID and pass word. I do not use this feature and also do not auto run the agent at startup, it is really not needed. I am using this drive for a one person office with network scanner, printers and 2 computers. I have fomatted the drive to RAID1; this took almost 2 hrs, exactly as advertized.
I do not use video streaming, the highest data amounts come from automatic backups, my music and my foto collection. The data rates I achieve together with my 2WIRE router from AT&T U-verse are 78Mbps download with FTP (72Mbps with SMB) and 32Mbps upload with FTP (54Mbps with SMB), tested with a 350MB file. Using WiFi gets me only 1..2Mbps. I don't know why data rates are not faster, since everybody is advertizing 1000Mbps, in practice it is hard to achieve 100Mbps.
The drive comes with pretty good backup software, Genie backup professional with 4 licences. This is the first time I actually can auto send email, because this software allows to set up all the SMTP details you need, especially port number and authentication. So I just read in my email about success and time of my backup jobs. You can set up to send email only in case of errors.
So far I cannot find anything bad about this drive. I just hope it will be reliable. Also one feature I liked is that the drives are hot swappable, so if one of my two drives fails I can exchange it in RAID1 mode, and the system will rebuild the mirror. This is obviously something I have not tested yet.
