The MXO2 Mini for Desktop Systems from Matrox is a device that combines the functionality of an HDMI & Analog I/O card in the form factor of a miniature breakout box. It will capture, convert, and play multiple video formats. This model features an adapter that is specifically designed for use with desktop systems, although a separate MXO2 PCI-E Express Card 34 Adapter can be used to make the unit compatible with laptops.
This device's small footprint makes it easy to transport. It is compatible with both Mac and PC systems, as well as most industry-standard applications, such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Photoshop, among others. Moreover, its color-calibration tool can be used to turn your HDMI monitor into a professional-grade video monitor.
Note! Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 support for Mac OSX to be available in early November 2010.

Comments about Matrox MXO2 Mini for Desktop Systems:
All documentation claims that the MXO2 will monitor 1080p 29.97 when running it with Avid Media Composer 5.5. I have yet to get it to work. Although Matrox technical support has been eager to help, even they can't explain why it wont. I get the feeling they haven't even tried it! Although it does monitor other raster sizes and frame rates quite will, so if you only need limited I/O then for the price it's pretty good.

Comments about Matrox MXO2 Mini for Desktop Systems:
Matrox goes out of their way to tout the MXO2 mini's "blue only" calibration feature as a way to turn any HDMI monitor into a somewhat accurate broadcast display. All this feature does is calibrate the signal going to the monitor. Your monitor's color could be way off, but the matrox software will show clean calibrated colorbars on the screen. Many have noticed that the color bars are pretty much perfect right out of the box, without any adjustments. Isn't that convenient! All it does is calibrate a digital signal, which should already be accurate --- also note that this calibration utility does not adjust the analog component signal. So, maybe this box is great for capturing video, but I bought it for playing back video and it's pretty useless at that unless you already have a proper broadcast monitor, and if you do, there are other much less expensive cards that will output the same HDMI and component signals. So, this MXO2 mini is just not worth the money.

Comments about Matrox MXO2 Mini for Desktop Systems:
In my Final Cut Pro Edit Suite, I've been having to use my 2nd computer monitor as my program monitor. With the MXO2 mini, I was able to purchase a consumer grade LCD flat panel and use the MXO2 mini's calibration tool to obtain an excellent program monitor. This left both of my computer monitors free for use in editing.
I would highly recommend this product to anyone who needs a program monitor out, but can't afford to go the Kona 3 route, and cannot afford to purchase an HD reference monitor.

Comments about Matrox MXO2 Mini for Desktop Systems:
I use this product primarily to have basic HD monitoring while I edit on my home suite. It works as advertised and pumps external video via HDMI to my Samsung 40" with no lag whatsoever. I've used it with Final Cut and Media Composer successfully.
I'm a little disappointed that so far I have not found an easy way to switch the external video on and off in Final Cut -- the usual tapping of command+F12 does not in fact do the trick; it seems you have to manually drill in to external video and set it to 'none', and then manually set the audio to follow as well. I've yet to really dig into whether there's a better workaround for this behavior though.
All in all a great product for the price!!

Comments about Matrox MXO2 Mini for Desktop Systems:
I got this unit to display video on 47" screen while I edit, and for monitoring Color correction. Mostly though, I was tired of the stop motion effect I was seeing when I monitored just using the video card from my Mac Pro, on the larger monitor.
It's definitely a crisper image, to the sometimes detriment of the source. It has definitely helped to reveal some of the shortcomings in an image.
Occasionally it will hiccup on an image or stumble over an edit, but I don't know if that is just the speed of my drives.
It was pretty easy to set-up and use.

Comments about Matrox MXO2 Mini for Desktop Systems:
I use Final Cut 7 and Avid 5. I am able to set up a Client monitor for both with ease. Avid automatically identified the matrox hardware, and FCP requires only a setting at the outset of the project. It is an economical way to get around more expensive options.
